LUNA FLICKERING FLAMES CIRCULAR SKIRT

designed by elann

Experience Level:
Intermediate.

This full circle skirt is knit from the waist down in Flickering Flame lace pattern, and finished with a playful picot bind off. It features an eyelet drawstring top for one size fits most styling, and is suitable to be worn at the waist or hip.

Size:
One size fits most. Top of skirt, ungathered, measures 36" (gather to fit); blocked length is 27"; bottom circumference is approximately 200". The lace pattern is very stretchy and accomodates many different body sizes easily.

Materials:
- 15 balls of elann.com Luna.
- 5.5 mm (US 9) circular needles, in approx. 16", 32", and 47" or 60" lengths, or size required to obtain correct gauge.
- 64 ring markers.

Gauge:
Measured over Flickering Flames Lace Pattern, before blocking, approx. 18 sts/ 20 rows = 4" on 5.5 mm (US 9) needles. After blocking, approx. 18 sts/18 rows = 4".

Flickering Flames Lace Pattern – 10 st/ 16 rnd rep (adapted for circular knitting):

This beautiful pattern is actually easy to work, if you place ring markers between each 10 st rep. Doing this, will help you to quickly see if you have worked each 10 st rep correctly, and avoid errors. i.e. you will easily be able to make sure that you have 10 sts between 2 markers at all times.

The pattern is also easy to memorize; for each set of 8 rnds, the number of k stitches at the beginning and end of each 10 st rep varies from 0 to 3, with a constant 7 st rep (shown in boldface) in between.

Rnd 1: *K3, sl 1, k2tog, psso, k3, yf, k1, yf, k0*

Rnd 5: *K1, sl 1, k2tog, psso, k3, yf, k1, yf, k2*
Rnd 7: *K0, sl 1, k2tog, psso, k3, yf, k1, yf, k3*

Picot Bind Off: (Multiple of 3 sts + 2)
BO 2 sts, *sl rem st on RH needle onto LH needle, CO 2 sts, BO 4 sts*; rep from * to * to end, then fasten off remaining st.

Method:
CO 160 sts. Join round, being careful not to twist circle.
Work *K2, P2* rib for 2 rnds.
Next Rnd: Work eyelet rnd for drawstring waist: *k2, yf, k2tog* (k2tog where you see p2 in rib).
Work 2 more rnds *K2, P2*.

PM at beg on next round, then work rnd 1 of Flickering Flames pattern over 160 sts, placing ring markers beg of each 10 st rep (16 markers total).

Work 23 rnds in Flickering Flames (1-16, then 1 to 7 of patt).
Increase Rnd: *yf, k1* (320 sts).
Next Rnd: K, placing additional 16 markers (32 markers total).

Work 47 rnds patt, beg rnd 1 of patt (rnds 1-16 twice, then 1-15 once).
Increase Rnd: *yf, k1* (640 sts).
Next Rnd: K, placing additional 32 markers (64 markers total).

Work 48 rnds patt, beg rnd 9 of patt. (9-16 once, 1-16 twice, 1-8 once). On last rnd, M1 in first st of round (641 stitches; ready for Pico BO). BO in picot. Piece will measure approx. 24" in length before blocking.

Finishing:
Wet block to measurements on diagram, pinning out eyelet portions of patt into points. Make a twisted cord or crocheted cord drawstring with a finished length of approx. 48", and thread through eyelets in waistband.

Notes About Designing Knitted Circles:

This skirt was designed according to Elizabeth Zimmerman's Pi formula for knitting a circle, whereby the number of stitches is doubled in rounds 3, 6, 12, 24, 48, 96, 192, etc.

Exclusive of the ribbed waistband, which is not included in the calculation of the lace circle, the hole in the circle for the waist of this skirt was accomplished by beginning at pi formula round 24 with 160 sts, increasing to 320 stitches after 24 rounds (round 48 in formula), then to 640 sts 48 rounds later (round 96 in formula). From here, 48 more rounds were worked, but within the formula of maintaining a circle, this last tier of the skirt could have been worked for a further 48 rounds. Therefore, if you wish a longer skirt, simply work more repeats of the pattern in the final tier.

Similarly, if you were making a smaller skirt for a child, you might begin at round 12 of the formula, then double the circumference after 12 rounds (round 24 of formula), 24 rounds (round 48 in formula), then 48 rounds (round 96 in formula).
