Instructions (chevron pattern version for children and women):
With size 1 dpn, cable cast-on (see Knitty.com for illustrated instructions) 16/24 st.
Rows 1 and 2: Sl1, K1 across, turn.

Hold two size 1 dpns parallel to each other; call one the "front" needle, the other the "back" needle. Carefully distribute your cast-on stitches alternately to these needles (slip first cast-on stitch to front needle, second to back, third to front, fourth to back, etc.). You will have 8/12 sts on each needle. Slip 4/6 sts from one of the needles to another size 1 dpn. Your working yarn should be positioned so that your first round of knitting starts with the 8/12-st needle. You've just knit a very short, closed-end tube inside out. Be sure to position the work so the smooth side is on the outside when you continue knitting in the round

Rnd 1: K1, M1L, K6/10, M1R, K2, M1L, K6/10, M1R, K1. (20/28 sts)
Rnd 2: K1, M1L, K8/12, M1R, K2, M1L, K8/12, M1R, K1. (24/32 sts)

Rnd 4: K1, M1L, K10/14, M1R, K2, M1L, K10/14, M1R, K1. (28/36 sts)

Rnd 8: K1, M1L, K14/18, M1R, K2, M1L, K14/18, M1R, K1. (36/44 sts)
Rnd 10: K1, M1L, K16/20, M1R, K2, M1L, K16/20, M1R, K1. (40/48 sts)
Rnd 12: K1, M1L, K18/22, M1R, K2, M1L, K18/22, M1R, K1. (44/52 sts)

Rnd 14: K1, M1L, K24, M1R, K2, M1L, K24, M1R, K1. (56 sts)
Rnd 16: K1, M1L, K26, M1R, K2, M1L, K26, M1R, K1. (60 sts)
Rnd 18: K1, M1L, K28, M1R, K2, M1L, K28, M1R, K1. (64 sts)
Rnd 20: K16, M1L, K48 (65 st.)
K 2 rnds even, then K 11/16 to shift BOR to center back of heel.

Begin pattern stitch on instep stitches:
Round 1: K11/16, (K1, YO, K3, K2tog, SSK, K3, YO) 2/3 times, K11/16
Round 2: K around

Repeat these 2 rnds until foot is approximately 1.75/2.25 inches shorter than desired length of sock, measuring from beginning of toe and ending with Round 2 at end of 22/33 instep pattern sts.

Heel:
Transfer the 22/33 instep stitches to a piece of smooth yarn. Slipping them onto a piece of yarn will reduce the tendency to create a gap at the corner of the heel. You will be working a short-row heel on the remaining 22/32 sts on two dpns, working back and forth.

Round 1 (RS): K21/31, SRW, turn
Round 2 (WS): P20/30, SRW, turn
Round 3 (RS): K19/29, SRW, turn
Round 4 (WS): P18/28, SRW, turn
Continue in this manner, working one less stitch each row until 8/10 stitches remain unworked at center heel, ending on the wrong side. The last row worked will be a purl row.

Turn Heel:
Next row: K across all heel sts, picking up wraps as explained in Notes. Turn.
Next row: Sl1, P across, picking up wraps. Turn.
Next row: Sl1, K 14/20, SRW, turn.
Next row: P8/10, SRW, turn.
Next row: K 9/11, picking up and knitting wrap in 9th/11th st, SRW, turn.
Next row: P 10/12, picking up and knitting wrap in 10th/12th st, SRW, turn.
Continue working in this manner, working an additional st and working the wrapped st each row until all but last 2 wrapped st have been worked. Your last row will be: P 20/30, SRW, turn.

Replace instep sts on dpn.

Next round: K20/30, pu and K wrap in 21st/31st st, K across instep sts in chevron pattern, pu and K wrap in next st, K across 11/16 sts, ending at center back of heel. (If there is a gap at the "corners," you may want to pick up an extra stitch from the row below between the instep and heel sts. Dec the extra st away by k2tog on following rnd.)

Work next 10 rounds as for foot, with chevron pattern on 22/33 instep sts and stockinette stitch (k every round) on heel sts. Work first and last Yos TBL on rows 2, 4, 6 and 8. Inc 1 st in 10th round of women's size only (66 st). Work around to beg of instep, which is now BOR. Then:

Round 1: (K1, YO, K3, K2tog, SSK, K3, YO) 4/6 times
Round 2: K around

Repeat these 2 rounds until leg portion of sock is desired 2" less than desired length.
Begin ribbing.

Round 1: K1, (P1, K2) to last st, K1.
Repeat this round for 2 inches.

Use larger dpn as right needle to bind off loosely in pattern. Make second sock.
