Sizes:
To fit average Woman (sample socks fit size 9 ½ - 10 for women).

Materials:
- 2 hanks of elann.com Undyed Superwash Merino Sock Yarn (sample sock was knit in yarn dyed with Country Classics Dyes, color COC-76 Kiwi by Dawn Miller)
- 2.25mm double-pointed needles, set of 5

Gauge:
8 sts/inch on 2.25mm needles in stockinette stitch


INSTRUCTIONS:

Leg:
Cast on 68 sts. Divide sts on 4 needles as follows (19 sts, 15 sts, 19 sts, 15 sts).
Set-up round for fancy rib.
(P1, K2, *P1, K1* 6 times) twice, P1, K2, P2, K2, (*P1, K1* 6 times, P1, K2) twice, P1.

Work 12 rounds in fancy rib as follows, repeating rounds 1-4 a total of 3 times.
Round 1: (P1, k2tog, yo, *P1, K1* 6 times) twice, P1, K2tog, yo, P2, K2tog, yo, (*P1, K1* 6 times, P1, K2tog, yo) twice, P1.
Round 2 and all even rounds : K the K sts and yos, P the P sts.
Round 3: (P1, yo, ssk, *P1, K1* 6 times) twice, P1, yo, ssk, P2, yo, ssk, (*P1, K1* 6 times, P1, yo, ssk) twice, P1.

Heel flap:
Note : The heel flap is worked back and forth in rows on 34 sts beg with a WS row and ending with a RS row.

Row 1(WS): K1, purl to last st, sl last st as if to purl with yarn in front (sl1 wyif).
Row 2: K1, *sl1 wyib, K1* repeat to last st, sl1 wyif.
Repeat rows 1 and 2 until you have worked 34 rows for the heel flap, ending with Row 2, knit the last st.

Heel turn:
Row 1 (WS): Sl1, P17, P2tog, P1, turn.
Row 2: Sl1, K3, ssk, K1, turn.
Row 3: Sl1, P4, P2tog, P1, turn.
Row 4: Sl1, K5, ssk, K1, turn.
Rep rows 3 and 4 working 1 additional knit or purl st after the sl1 until all sts are worked, finish with row 4, ending with ssk. There should be 18 sts left on heel flap.

Gusset :
With the same needle, pick up 17 sts from side of heel flap.
Work across 34 instep stitches in pattern (starting with Row 1 of chart).
With new needle, pick up 17 sts from side of heel flap and K9 sts from bottom of foot to move beginning of Round to centre of foot (86 sts total).

Gusset decreases :
Row 1: Knit to 3 sts before end of Needle 1, K2tog, K1, work chart across instep (should now be row 2 of chart), K1, ssk, knit to end of needle 4.
Row 2: Work straight keeping bottom of foot in st st and chart pattern correct.
Repeat rows 1 and 2 until you have 68 sts in total on needles.

Work foot with no further decreases following pattern as set until foot is 1.5" shorter than desired length.

Toe decrease:
Row 1: K1, k2tog, K28, ssk, K2, k2tog, K28, ssk, K1.
Row 2 and all even rows: Knit.
Row 3: K 1, k2tog, K26, ssk, K2, k2tog, K26, ssk, K1.
Repeat decreases every other row as set until 28 sts remain.
Graft toe together. There is a good tutorial available at knitty.com for this technique.

Abbreviations:
BOR = beginning of row (round) , CO = cast on, dpn = double-pointed needle(s) , K = knit, M1L = make one left: With left needle tip, lift strand between needles from front to back. Knit lifted loop through the back. , M1R = make one right: With left needle tip, lift strand between needles from back to front. Knit lifted loop through the front. , P = purl, PM = place marker, PU = pick up, rnd = round, sl = slip, SRW = (on right/wrong side) slip 1, move yarn to front/back, move slipped st back to left needle, move yarn to back/front, turn., SSK = slip next two stitches, one at a time, to right needle as follows: slip the first stitch knitwise and the second one purlwise. Insert tip of left needle into fronts of these stitches, from left to right. Knit them together., st = stitch, TBL = through back loop, tog = together, YO = yarn over
