SWEDISH PANCAKES STOCKING CAP by Sharon Turner Monkeysuits In childrens sizes XS, S, M, and L (circumference: 16, 17, 18.5, 19.5") Materials: 95 yards each of 3 colors of worsted weight yarn (pictured above in Classic Elite Tapestry - 20 st/4" - 95 yards per hank - A=blue, B=yellow, and C=black). Size 8 (5mm) knitting needles. Gauge: 4.5 sts and 6 rows/inch over St st on size 8 (5mm) needles. Directions: Front Half With size 8 needles and C, cast on 36 (38, 42, 44) sts. Work 12 rows St st for rolled brim.Next row (RS): change to B, and beg stripe patt (6 rows B, 6 rows A). Work stripe patt for 3.5 (4, 4.5, 5)", ending with a WS row. Shape top: dec 1 st at each end (by SSK beg row, and K2 tog end of row) this row, then every RS row until 4 sts rem. Break yarn, and pull through sts and secure. Back Half Work as for front half. Finishing Weave in loose ends. Steam halves to block, omitting rolled brim. Using tapestry needle and yarn C, stitch up sides with RSs out. Sew brim seams on RS and allow to roll. Tassel: Cut a 3.5" piece of cardboard. Take yarn C, and wrap around cardboard about 50 times. Cut end. With yarn still wrapped around cardboard, take another strand of C, and pull through the bottom edge between cardboard and wrapped strands. Tie it tightly in a knot to secure bottom of tassel. Now insert scissors into the top edge between the cardboard and wrapped strands, and cut to free the tassel from the cardboard. Cut a short length of A, and tie it around the strands about 3/4" above the tail. Pull the ends of this piece into the strands of the tassel to hide them, and cut to a shorter length than tassel strands. Use the tail to sew tassel to point of hat.
