LEAF AND ACORN LACE SCARF by Shui Kuen Kozinski 2006 Scarf Contest Gold Honors Winner Mighty Oak – Its Leaves drinking Sun, Acorns dreaming Immortality. Leaf and Acorn Lace Scarf is a beautiful hybrid of both Shetland and Canadian lace knitting. The body (ground) of the scarf is adapted from Marianne Kinzel’s “Second Book of Modern Lace Knitting”. It is one of the most popular ground stitch for scarves, shawls, bedspreads and curtains in Shetland lace knitting. The scarf is edged on one side with a very wide leaf and acorn lace motif, which is from “Home Work, a Choice Collection of Useful Designs for Crochet and Knitting Needle.” p313-p314. “Home Work” was collected, corrected and arranged by A.M. Published in Toronto, by Rose Publishing Co. in 1891. Experience: Intermediate. Knitters with lace knitting experience will find this scarf pattern quite easy. Size: 12 inches wide from widest point and 60 inches long. Materials: 2 balls of elann.com Super Kydd, 70% Super Kid Mohair/ 30% Nylon, color 2101 Ivory. 3.5 mm (US 4) 24” circular needles, or 3.5 mm straight needles. Pointed needle tips are recommended for this project. Size F (3.75mm) crochet hook for provisional cast on. Fine smooth waste yarn in contrast color. Gauge: Measured over lace pattern 26 sts = 4” after blocking. Notes: 1) Scarf is knitted from end to end with scalloped picot edgings. 2) For scalloped picot edging, begin with provisional cast on. Wind 7 yards of shawl yarn into a small ball, do not break yarn. This ball will be used later for the picot edging on the first end (bottom end). Instructions: Cast on : using provisional cast on. With contrast color waste yarn and crochet hook, chain 80. Using shawl yarn with small ball hanging as the tail, pick up and knit 69 sts in the bumps on the backside of the chains - 69 sts. Top end edging: K 8 rows (4 garter ridges) and bind off all sts using picot bind off. Picot bind-off: Insert the right-hand needle into the first stitch on the left-hand (LH) needle, and knit a stitch but do not slip the stitch off the left needle. Slip the new stitch back onto the LH needle, then make a second new stitch as before. Cast off four stitches, then slip the remaining stitch back onto the LH needle. Repeat along the row, making two stitches and casting off four each time. The first end (bottom end) edging: Slowly “unzip” crochet chain beginning with last chain. Put 69 st onto needle and using small ball wound at beginning, work picot bind off same as top end. Finishing: Weave in yarn ends. Soak the scarf in warm water for 20 minutes. Roll in a towel to remove access water, spread out on a flat surface, smooth into shape and pin. Leave in place until thoroughly dry. Trim yarn ends. Abbreviations: K - knit, P - purl, SSK - a left-slanting single decrease, 1. Slip 2 stitches separately to right needle as if to knit, 2. Insert tip of left needle into fronts of these stitches, from left to right. Knit them together. One stitch has been decreased, SK2P - a left-slanting double decrease, 1. Slip 1 stitch knitwise, 2. Knit next 2 stitches together, 3.
