TAPESTRY SHAWL

By Lisa Bennett
May/June Design Contest Bronze Winner

Materials:
- elann.com Sonata: 3 balls each French Navy (A), Inca Gold (B), Burnished Apricot (D), Tapestry Blue (E); 2 balls each Capri Blue (C) and Chamois (F); 4 balls Burgundy Rose (G) [total: 20 balls].
- elann.com Sonata Print: 1 ball Regatta (H)
- Beads: 100 to 750 glass beads for fringe (see Beading instructions); 29 apricot-colored opalescent glass beads for decoration of tapestry square
- 3 yards ½" polyester seam binding in a navy color
- One crochet hook, size G6 (4mm)
- One size 10.5 (6.5mm) 36" circular needle.
Note: Fringe requires 2.5 balls Sonata (2 balls Burgundy Rose, .5 French Navy) plus leftover amounts of other colors for fringe. If you do not use fringe, you will need 2 less balls Burgundy Rose Sonata (and no fringe beads)

Gauge:
Approx. 3.5 sts/in on size 10.5 (6.5mm) needles, with 2 strands throughout.
This shawl was knitted in stockinette stitch, although it would also be lovely in garter stitch or reverse stockinette.

Difficulty:
Intermediate, due to many color changes and embellishments. Technically, this pattern is easy.

Tips:
- Make a large swatch to determine your gauge. Determine after you’ve made your gauge swatch whether you would like the section 1 and 2 right side to be in stockinette, reverse stockinette, or garter stitch.
- Always inc on the WRONG side. Do not sl the first st of every row.
- If section 1 and 2 are garter st, K all rows. Hang a marker on the ws.
- Weave in ends as you knit, across the ws of the work, as much as possible.

Instructions:
Shawl is divided into Sections 1 and 2, which are identically knitted but with different color changes. The third section is the "Tapestry Square".

Edge Stitch:
- Starting on R86, K the first 3 and last 3 sts of every row. This is your garter st edge for the tip of the tapestry section.
- At the same time, beginning at R86, still keeping in patt, with color sequences as shown, dec 1 st each edge (K2tog) of every WS row until there are 3 sts. K 1 row. BO in K.

Making up:
- Sew section 1 and section 2 to tapestry square using a backstitch or running stitch, using one strand of coordinating Sonata (French Navy).
- Using crochet hook, run a "long single crochet" stitch along the sides and top of the shawl using 2 strands French Navy.
- Long sc: Using 2 strands Sonata and moving from right to left as you face the garment, place a slip knot on the hook. Catch the doubled yarn with the hook through the top two threads of the shawl’s edge stitch; draw through. Two loops on hook. YO and draw yarn through. One loop on hook. YO and draw yarn through again. One loop on hook. Skip one edge st; continue in following edge st.
- Second row of crochet: Run a sc backwards along the back edge of the previous crochet row (from left to right, ws of garment facing you), using 1 strand Burgundy Rose (rib st).
- Sew, either by hand or machine, a strip of seam tape along the inside top edge of the shawl for stabilization.

Fringe:

Short version:
Add 6" fringe, with 4 strands per fringe, to the entire bottom edge of shawl; add beads as desired.

Long version:
Cut 12" strands of all leftover yarn colors, as well as 2 skeins of maroon fringe and ½ skein of navy fringe (wrap the yarn around a doubled 6" wide piece of cardboard; cut up the middle). You will, with a simple loop, add approx. 1 fringe approx. every 4 rows or 2 sts (there should be approx. 43 fringes on tapestry point and 68 fringes along long edges of Section 1 and 2). For the long edges, add 3 strands of Burgundy Rose yarn and one strand of contrasting yarn per fringe. For the tapestry point, use the colors of fringe per the colors used in the 4 rows, e.g.: if the rows knitted were 2R Burnished Apricot and 2R Burgundy Rose, use 2 strands apricot and 2 strands rose.

Tip for adding the fringe:
Get a glass of good wine when you sit down to do this, and some soothing music. Have good light and a comfortable sitting position. This will take a few hours; break it into more than one day. I did it in two days, with a strong back, and it hurt afterwards. These things too shall pass. Just think of how beautiful it will be with the fringe.

Beading:

Short version: Embellish the tapestry and fringe with beads as you wish.

Long version:

Get in a comfortable chair and have a glass of good wine (see above) and soothing music. Have good light and reading glasses if necessary. Relax your shoulders and breathe. Don’t think about how many you need to do; just feel good as you finish one bead and move on to the next. These things too shall pass. Just think of how beautiful it will be.

Embellish the tapestry square with 29 apricot-colored opalescent beads, using needle and thread as if sewing on a button, at the bottom of the single sl st on every Row 1 of the pattern in the "apricot bead section" as shown above and in photo.

Embellish fringes with shiny, opaque, translucent, or glittery beads. Make sure the beads can easily pass through this size yarn (but are not terribly large, because your shawl already weighs about as much as a 6-month-old child). There is a possibility of adding over (68 x 8) + (43 x 4) = 544 + 172 = approx. 716 beads; I added 250 (which nearly doubled the cost of this shawl). I focused on adding dark contrasting beads to the fringe threads of lighter colors (e.g., gold, apricot) to show them off. If you really love beads, by all means, put one on every strand, use lots of colors, go for it. Send a photo to the elann Chat Center - I’d love to see it.

Tip for beading the fringes: I’m told there are some wonderful beading tools that would help in this effort. I didn’t have them. I made a loop at the end of some Glide dental floss (a bit thicker and more durable than some), tied the end of the loop onto the end of the string of beads, passing all beads onto the floss; threaded the yarn through the loop, forcing one bead onto the yarn, and with a tug pulled the bead through. My one piece of dental floss lasted through 250 beads. I can’t guarantee results with other dental floss brands:-)

Alternate Colorways:
As an alternative to the "Tapestry" colorway given above, below are two suggested alternate colorways: "Earth" and "Flower Garden". For the "Earth" colorway, I've given two alternatives for the "G" color - Burgundy Rose will keep the colors in the mid-saturation range, or Deep Black will give a more dramatic effect. The colors I've chosen for these alternate colorways are essentially double split complementary - knowing this, you may wish to create your own. If you do, be sure to let me know - send a photo to the elann Chat Center!
