CHUNKY HIGHLAND WOOL WRAPdesigned by Eileen Casey May/June Design Contest Gold Winner

Experience Level: Experienced.
Materials:
- 10 balls elann.com Peruvian Highland Chunky (sample knit in shade 0651 Forest Glade Heather).
- 6.0mm (US 10 needles), or necessary size to achieve gauge.
Gauge:
3.5sts = 1 inch over reverse stockinette st.
Instructions:
Make 1 st.
Row 1 (RS): K, P, K all in same stitch. (3 sts)
Row 2 (WS): slip 1 purlwise, K1, P1.
(Note that the first and last st from this point on become the selvedge edge. On RS rows, slip 1st st knitwise and K last st. On WS rows slip 1st st purlwise and P last st. These two sts are taken as read for the rest of the pattern and will not be included in the rest of the instructions).
Row 3: Inc in next st, follow moss st pattern to last st, inc in last st.
Row 4 and alternate rows: moss st.
Repeat these 2 rows until there are 21 pattern sts on the needle, ending with a WS row (23 sts in total including the selvedge edges).
Next row (RS): Inc in next st, moss 8, P3, moss 8, inc in next st.
Next row (WS): Moss 10, K3, moss 10.
Next row: Inc in next st, moss 8, P5, moss 8, inc in next st.
Next row: Moss 10, K5, moss st 10.
Continue to increase at the beginning and end of every RS row as set, keeping the moss st borders at a count of 10 sts and increasing the reverse stockinette panel at the centre of the piece. Continue in this manner until there are 31 sts on the needle – the 2 selvedge sts, 10 st moss border on either side, and 9 st reverse stockinette panel in the center. End with a WS row.
Begin cables:
Place a row counter on the needle, or reset the row counter if you are already using one. From this point forward, the selvedge and moss borders at each side are understood, and the directions apply to the central panel of reverse stockinette. You will continue to increase at either end of every RS row throughout the whole piece.
Angel Cable:
Below are row by row instructions, and for those knitters who prefer charts, click here for .pdf Charts. Because of its width, the Angel Cable Chart is split into two full page charts, which can be printed as two pages, and then taped together.
Row 1 (RS): P5, K into back and front of next st, then with the LH needle pick up the vertical “bar” that runs between these 2 sts and K it (referred to as M2inc), P5.

The piece now splits at the centre and the “wings” of the wrap are worked as two separate pieces. The can be worked simultaneously using separate balls of yarn if you wish, other wise beginning with a RS row, you will work the first half of the sts, and leave the second half on a piece of yarn or holder.
For the Right Wing, you continue to increase on the RS edge on alternate rows as you have been throughout, but now you will decrease at the LS edge at the same time. This way the stitch count remains the same, and the knitting is shaped on the bias so each wing spreads outwards to give the wrap its “V” shape. On the Left Wing, you will decrease at the RS edge, and increase at the LS edge on alternate rows. As you will see in the directions, there is an additional increase and decrease on each RS row in addition to those in the border – these are made at the edges of the central cable panel to ensure that the cable pattern also follows a bias shape along with the rest of the knitting. Once the pattern is set, you will find the increasing and decreasing very natural, it just takes a few rows to get into the swing of it.
Reset your row counter. The border sts are included in the directions for the first few rows within {} parentheses to help establish the pattern. After that, only the directions for the panel within the borders is given.
Right Wing:
Row 1 (RS): {Slip 1 knitwise, inc in next st, moss st 8, P2tog}, P7, bind3, P2, bind3, P2, bind3, P4, bind3, P2, bind3, P2, bind3, P into front and back of next st, P6, {P2tog, moss st 9, K1}.
Row 2 (WS): {Slip 1 purlwise, moss st 10}, K8, P3, K2, P3, K2, P3, K4, P3, K2, P3, K2, P3, K8, {moss st 10, P1}.

Row 8: K10, P3, K2, P3, K2, P6, K2, P3, K2, P3, K10.
Row 9: P9, (T5L) 2 times, C6B, (T5R) 2 times, P into front and back of next st, P8.

Row 18: As Row 8.
Row 19: P7, (T5R) 3 times, (T5L) 3 times, P into front and back of next st, P6.
Row 20: As Row 2.
Row 21: As Row 1.
Row 22: As Row 2.
Row 23: As Row 1.
Row 24: As Row 2.
These 24 rows form the cable pattern. Continue as set until piece measures approximately 50 inches from the bottom edge to the top, ending with Row 2 of pattern.
Next Row: P7, sl3dec, P2, sl3dec, P2, sl3dec, P4, sl3dec, P2, sl3dec, P2, sl3dec, P into front and back of next st, P6.
Next Row: K.
Continue in reverse stockinette for approximately 2 inches – increasing and decreasing on RS rows as already set as follows: inc in first st after selvedge, moss st 8, P2tog, P to last 19 sts, P into front and back of next st, P6, P2tog, moss st 9, selvedge st 1.
Work for approximately 1 inch in moss st, without any increases or decreases, ending with a WS row. Bind off loosely in moss st.
Left Wing
Join yarn and pick up the sts for the Left Wing that were left on a holder, and begin with a RS row. Reset row counter to zero and work as given for the Right Wing. The shapings are reversed as follows: at beginning of row work selvedge, moss st 9, then P2tog; P into front and back of last st before the cable pattern begins; P2tog before moss st border on Left edge; inc in last st before selvedge. These are the increases and decreases in the Right Wing, worked in reverse.

Finishing
Weave in loose ends. This piece needs to be well blocked in order to give it a flat, symmetrical shape. Soak in Eucalan, or wet piece thoroughly, then place on a towel and shape, flattening and smoothing as you go. The pieces may need to be lightly stretched to ease out any puckers due to the dense cables. Pin into shape according to measurements and allow to dry.
Acknowledgements:
The closed cables were made using the method pioneered by Alice Starmore.
Cable on either wing of wrap is found in Harmony Guides, 220 Aran Stitches, Volume 5, pg 59. I used it in a slightly modified form.
