Fragrant air.
Meandering among Roses -
Garden Path.

Garden Path Shawl is a top-down, half circle, garter stitch, in four equal sections and completely reversible shawl. The shape is formed by increasing 8 stitches every 4th row.

The basic structure of the shawl is based on The Rain Dance Shawl, by Elann, and two motifs :
1) Garden Path motif - is from A Fourth Treasury of Knitting Patterns, by Barbara Walker, page 94, Fig. 61 - Lace 10 with modification.
2) Roses motif - is from The Lacy Knitting of Mary Schiffmann, by Nancy Nehring, pages 30-31. Windows Ground with modification. (Note: If you do not have this book, the Rose motif is also in A Treasury of Knitting Patterns, by Barbara Walker, page 226. It is called Rose Trellis Lace, but I omitted the Trellis.)

Experience: Intermediate

Size: 76 inches wide at widest point by 36 inches long at longest point after blocking.

Materials:
10 balls of elann.com Peruvian Pure Alpaca
5.5mm (US9) straight needles.
40 inch circular needle.
Ring markers or slip markers.
5.5 mm (US 9) crochet hook for provisional cast on.

Gauge:
16 st, 22 rows/ 4” over garter st after blocking. (Note: Alpaca yarn with 5.5 mm (US 9) needles makes this shawl open, and yet softly warm. It has a wonderful drape. You can substitute elann.com Peruvian Highland Wool, or elann.com Peruvian Sierra Aran. You can also substitute elann.com Peruvian Baby Cashmere, or elann.com Peruvian Baby Silk, to make a slightly smaller shawl. In general, for lace knitting, needles should be at least two sizes larger than the ball band indicates).

Stitch Glossary:
M1
(make one st)
1. Place the tip of the left needle under the horizontal strand of yarn that connects the stitches of both needles, from front to back. (The strand of yarn forms a loop on the left needle.)
2. Insert the tip of the right needle into the back of the loop, from right to left, and knit it. (Knitting into the back of this loop will twist the st and prevent a hole forming.)

INSTRUCTIONS:

Cast on: With contrast color waste yarn and crochet hook, chain 4. With shawl yarn pick up and knit 2 sts in the bumps on the backside of the center 2 chains - 2 sts. Knit 10 rows. Next row, K2, pick up and knit 1 st in each of the 5 garter ridges along selvedge edge of piece, unzip waste yarn chain to expose 2 sts at base of the piece, place these 2 sts onto left needle, K2 - 9 sts total.

Body of the shawl: (start Chart 1, row 1 to row 148)
-The chart represents only one section of the shawl. The two edging sts on both sides and the center sts are not in the chart)
-The chart shows only right side rows, all wrong side rows are knit. (Note: There are no purl sts at all in this shawl.)
-On the right side of the chart, it shows the row counts. On the left side of the chart, it shows total sts counts. For example: row 1-4, you will have 13 sts per section. Row 5-8, you will have 15 sts, and so on…
-At this point, you can use a slip marker on the 3 single sts, instead of ring marker. You can move the slip marker up after every several rows you knit. The slip marker helps you to see the divisions of each section.

For the right side: K2, chart, K1, chart, K1, chart, K1, chart, K2

For the wrong side: Knit.
148 rows will finish the body of the shawl

Edging of the shawl: (work chart 2, row 149 to row 170)
Row 171: K2, (YO, K15, YO, K1) 23 times, YO, K15, YO, K2 (total 435 stitches)

Bind off all sts very loosely as following: K2, *transfer these 2 sts back to left hand needle, K2 together through back loops, K1; repeat from *.

Finishing:
Weave in loose ends. Soak shawl in warm water for 20 minutes, wrap in towel to remove excess water. Lay flat on a big towel and pull all the points at each “YO, K1, YO” in the last row of edging, and pin to measurement.
Let dry thoroughly, and trim yarn ends to flush.
