FLOWER PETAL SHAWL

Designed by elann

Let the luxurious softness and fluid drape of pure alpaca embrace you! This bell-shaped shawl is knit from the neck down, in a simple lace pattern that opens like flower petals as you knit down to its graceful points.

Experience Level:
Advanced beginner – an excellent first lace project. Knits up quickly and easily.

Size: Approx. 60" wide at widest point x 32" long at longest point after blocking.

Materials:
- 7 (9) balls of elann.com Peruvian Pure Alpaca.
- 5.5mm (US 9) 40" circular needle.
- 3 ring markers.
*Note: This shawl, as pictured, was knit in 4 panels, for a long shawl with a narrow profile - you will see above that 4 panels does not produce a complete semi-circle – the shawl's overall profile is narrower than a semi-circle – rather, it is very wide triangle. For a full semi circle shawl, with a wider top and bottom, we offer instructions for a five-panel alternative that requires 25% more yarn (9 balls, rather than 7).

Gauge:
16 st/20 rows to 4", measured over st st, using 5.5mm (US 9) needles.
Pure Alpaca normally knits 20 st to 4" on 4mm (US 6) needles, but this shawl is intended to have a looser, more open gauge for a soft drape.

Stitch Patterns:

Simple Fishtail Lace:
Knit from the top down, in 4(5) equal sections, the entire shawl is based on this one simple lace pattern – the number of stitches you begin each repeat with will determine how long each 'tail' of lace will be – e.g.
If you began with 9 sts in each of the 4(5) sections, each section of the fishtail will look like this:
R1: K1, yo, k2, sl1-k2tog-psso, k2, yo, k1.
R2, 4, and 6: P
R3: K2, yo, k1, sl1-k2tog-psso, k1, yo, k2.
R5: K3, yo, k0, sl1-k2tog-psso, k0, yo, k3.
And if you began with 13 sts, the pattern would be the same, but it would continue for 10 rows, rather than 6:
R1: K1, yo, k4, sl1-k2tog-psso, k4, yo, k1.
R2, 4, 6, 8, 10: P
R3: K2, yo, k3, sl1-k2tog-psso, k3, yo, k2.
R5: K3, yo, k2, sl1-k2tog-psso, k2, yo, k3.
R7: K4, yo, k1, sl1-k2tog-psso, k1, yo, k4
R9: K5, yo, k0, sl1-k2tog-psso, k0, yo, k5.

Simple Fishtail Border:
The pointed border of the shawl is a garter and eyelet edged variation this same stitch pattern, worked over 25 sts and 22 rows. Each point is worked separately as follows:
R1: K2, yo, sl1-k1-psso, k7, sl1-k2tog-psso, k7, k2tog, yo, k2.
R2 and all WS rows: K2, *p*, k2.
R3: K2, yo, sl1-k1-psso, k6, sl1-k2tog-psso, k6, k2tog, yo, k2.
R5: K2, yo, sl1-k1-psso, k5, sl1-k2tog-psso, k5, k2tog, yo, k2.
R7: K2, yo, sl1-k1-psso, k4, sl1-k2tog-psso, k4, k2tog, yo, k2.
R9: K2, yo, sl1-k1-psso, k3, sl1-k2tog-psso, k3, k2tog, yo, k2.
R11: K2, yo, sl1-k1-psso, k2, sl1-k2tog-psso, k2, k2tog, yo, k2.

Instructions:
Shawl is worked flat, back and forth on a 40" 5.5mm (US 9) needle. You will begin by casting on 4(5) stitches, and as you work to the bottom edge of the shawl, you will be increasing 8(10) stitches every 4 rows, until you reach 300(375) stitches, then at row 147, you will begin to work 12(15) separate 25st fishtail points as above. Below are simple line by line instructions to print and tick off as you knit. Instructions are for the 4 panel version, with numbers for the wider 5 panel version indicated in parenthesis:
