MOONLIGHT SONATA SHAWL

by Shui Kuen Kozinski

On Moonlighted Snow -
Staccato of Wolf Tracks,
Northern Lights Dancing.

The Moonlight Sonata Shoulder Shawl, with its unique crescent shape, stays on the shoulder very well. It can be worn as a traditional shawl, opened flat and draped over the shoulders, as pictured above, and also, because it is completely reversible, its edge can be turned out for a rolled shawl collar edge, and closed at the center front with a brooch, as pictured below.

The reversible motif of moonlight is from Charted Knitting Designs, A Third Treasury of Knitting Patterns, by Barbara Walker, page 150, 151, 152. It is called Sunspots.

Instructions:
Cast on: Shawl is worked from the top down and begins at the back of the neck band using a provisional cast on. With contrast color scrap yarn and crochet hook, chain 12. With shawl yarn pick up and knit 7 sts in the bumps on the back side of the center 7 chains - 7 sts.
Row 1: knit.
Row 2: yo, k2tog, k5. Repeat these two rows 83 times. There are 83 garter ridges. After the last row (row 2), you have yo, k2tog, k5 (7 sts) on your right hand needle. Do not turn work. Pick up and knit 1 st in each of the 83 garter ridges along selvedge edge of piece, unzip scrap yarn chain to expose 7 sts at base of the piece, place these 7 sts onto left needle, K7. (97 sts total)

Now you have 7 edging sts on both sides, 1 center stitch, and 41 sts between right edging and center st, and 41 sts between left edging and center st. (place slip markers at 7-41-1-41-7 to indicate the edging and center stitch as a reminder)

Repeat R1- R12 nine more times, or additional times for the desired length, working additional sts into pattern repeats as established.

K 8 rows (4 garter ridges).
Bind off all sts very loosely using one size larger needle with picot bind off.

Picot bind-off: Insert the right-hand needle into the first stitch on the left-hand (LH) needle, and knit a stitch but do not slip the stitch off the left needle. Slip the new stitch back onto the LH needle, then make a second new stitch as before. Cast off four stitches, then slip the remaining stitch back onto the LH needle. Repeat along the row, making two stitches and casting off four each time.

Finishing:
Weave in loose ends. Soak shawl in warm water for 20 minutes, wrap in towel to remove excess water. Lay flat on a big towel and pull the picots between two moonlight motifs out to form a scallop, and pin to measurement.
Let dry thoroughly, and trim yarn ends to flush.
