why didn`t I buy that hat pattern when I saw it? Hello all,
I am new to this board and have a question I hope you can help me with. I recently saw a pattern for a hat with a cabled band that was knitted so the cable went around the head rather that up and down (I hope this is clear) It was knitted in a double layer, then the top was made by picking up stitches from the band and knitting in the round to the top. I stupidly did not buy the pattern and can`t recreate it because I am not good enough at calculating cables & gauge to get the correct measurement for the circumference of a man`s head. Can anyone help by either knowing what pattern I mean or by pointing me in the direction of help in designing it myself?
Thanks, Cate (who is newly re-obsessed with knitting after not picking up a needle for 20 years - I love the new yarns.)

why didn`t I buy that hat pattern when I saw it? THANK YOU!!! The Knitty pattern is the one I had seen but I just couldn`t remember where. I even thought I had looked at Knitty. Now I can make it - it was going to be a Christmas present LOL. And I am making a matching dog sweater - what a nut.

Knitting plans for the New Year Back when I was teaching quilting I discovered a new name for unfinished projects - samples! It is rather like the cooking shows where they have the dish in various stages of preparation.
Also I am an on again - off again follower of Fly Lady and have learned I can do anything for 15 minutes. This is how I am managing to finish my Whippet`s boring dog sweater.

Scullyknits! Bravo! Missing buttonholes provide a great opportunity for making i-cord loops. I think they can look nicer anyway.

compare addi turbos & inox xpress to clover bamboo please Since begining to knit again after 20 years - and long ago passed along my old needles because I thought I wouldn`t knit again - I have been using the clover bamboo needles. Would love to hear what the group has to say about them in comparison to the metal needles. I do use circular most of the time - a legacy of teaching myself much of what I know using Elizabeth Zimmermans Knitting w/o Tears.

compare addi turbos & inox xpress to clover bamboo please Thanks so much for all your replies. I love having the right tools for a job - and an excuse to buy them. I will try some metal needles when I have a project that suits.

Zimmerman books While Knitting w/o Tears would be my recommendation, you might want to try your local library first. While browsing the knitting section at mine today I noticed that all of EZ`s books were there.

Peruvian Uros, Alpace, Highland Wool - all ordered I ordered some of the Alpaca to make myself a hat and fliptop glove/mittens. After all this cold (for Virginia) weather I want something really warm to wear to the dog park. I loved the colors and couldn`t decide so I got three different ones.

knitting magazine gripes I have to say I knit the Vegan Fox from knitty.com and have loved it and so have my friends. It is just so funny. It has inspired me to design a sweater for my Whippet that will make him look sort of like a miniature Scottish Deerhound (I have two). Of course, I am still working on designing a sweater that will actually fit the way I want. And the folks I have knitted hairy scarves for are thrilled. But.... I generally agree with you. After twenty years away from knitting I think most of the patterns are just as ugly as they were back then. We don`t really need too many patterns, just varying the yarn in a classic does the trick - but that doesn`t sell magazines.

Koko, Gigi, new patterns, just checking in! Project(s) of the week. I was laid up with an infected knee for almost 5 days so I had plenty of time for knitting. Made all but the mitten part of one of the Broad St Gloves from knitty.com using my Sock It To Me i Colori. Loved the look but didn`t like the thumb gusset. I am thinking of starting over with a different pattern even though I will be giving up many hours of knitting. Almost finished a sweater for my Whippet - just the neck to complete. It is full of improvisations and mistakes but will work just fine. Started the Coronet hat from knitty.com using some of the recent Alpaca yarn. So soft. It is my second time making this hat, the first one was a gift. I am going to change the design when I get to the decrease at the top so it is more decorative. I love knitting with the alpaca. It feels so good in my hands.

Another Peruvian yarn vote Please more 100% Alpaca & please don`t make us wait until Fall. I just finished a hat and it is so soft and wonderful and beautiful. And now, after reading everyone else`s votes, I want to try Highland Wool & Uros. Sorry to start a new batch of messages but for some reason, I can`t post a reply.

Another Peruvian yarn vote I plan to knit multiple small projects this summer so the fiber content is not such a big deal in the hot weather. Is there a possibility of a superwash Peruvian yarn? I am going to be knitting sweaters for Italian Greyhound Rescue and would love to have some of those gorgeous yummy colors and yarns to use.
I understand completely about the inventory thing - maybe a limited number of the most popular colors would keep the yarn addicts satisfied? Er, well, probably not.

dog sweater I am finding it harder to knit a dog sweater that really fits than it is to knit a human shaped sweater. Granted, I have a Whippet and they are really curvy. And because he is male I have to be sure he can`t pee on it. So far, no good. Depending on your puppy`s figure, you might try the Howl pattern in Stitch `n` Bitch. Mine turned out to be one of the world`s ugliest but I think that was partly due to the fact that my yarn didn`t look pretty in a garter stitch.

Medical miracle for dry skin!!!!!! If you are also having problems with dry, itchy skin in other areas of your body a dermatologist recommended switching to All - Free & Clear. When I did that and did an extra rinse cycle my extremely itchy winter skin improved greatly. She said the All - Free & Clear is less irritating and rinses out better. One reason for all the itching is the build-up of detergent in our clothes & the extra layers we are wearing. I also have ecs... (can`t spell it) on my hands and feet so I sympathize.

naturagarn You guys really blew it with all your talk about the Quecha because my samples subscription doesn`t start until March. I wouldn`t even have known about it if there hadn`t been all this talk & now I will be poised at the computer 9:00 am EST just like everyone else!

*BURP!* Sated on Quechua Just checked & the quantities were still at 50+. I have to confess that I ordered right at 9:00 EST. Just small amounts as I am really on a glove spree. I am making the cable cashmere gloves in the little Vogue Mittens & Gloves book. Not in cashmere but in the 100% alpaca. I love the way it feels. I was trying to make gloves based on the Interweave Knits article but decided to follow some patterns until I really got a feel for glove knitting. Anyway, I hope everyone posts pictures of their projects made from Quechua.

Denise needles I recently bought a set and am making my first project with them. A triangular shawl that began with one stitch and now has at least 150. I just added more cable when I needed it. I am really glad I got the set and know I will save money in the long run because I won`t have to keep buying different lengths of circular needles. Plus the business is owned by a mother & daughter who were looking to get a set of needles, contacted the inventors & ended up buying the business.

Please don`t think I`m rude................. Yes, I do wear shawls. I like the triangular ones under my jacket because they are warmer than scarves. They are also useful for keeping warm when the thermostat is set low. My first shawl was a Shetland shawl I bought in Scotland in 1968. It was square and I used it for years & years & years. It was handy as a light blanket as well. Finally it just wore out.
My sister & I went to Scotland a few years ago & our mother asked me to look for one for her because she had always coveted mine. We found a nice handknit one in natural black wool but our mom never got to wear it. I`ve been wearing it so much this winter that I decided to make myself another shawl so it wouldn`t wear out too fast.
