Continental or English?
|
I first learned to knit English as that was the way my mother knitted. Then when I was about 21, I watched a Norwegian gal I worked with just zip along. I asked her to teach me, and never looked back. This is why I do the `Norwegian purl` rather than the way most Continental knitters purl - that was how her grandmother had taught her. Mine takes a bit of practice to get up to speed, but is even and never twists - yarn is always behind the needle points. My long-tail cast-on is the Norwegian one, as well, very versatile, with lots of stretch, and the same on both sides.
Benne, in the Philosopher`s Wool technique, the colour in the right hand is thrown, in English style, and the colour in the left hand is knit continental. As the PW patterns are all knit in the round, you are only using knit stitches. Next time you come to SSI I`ll teach you how to knit continental for that colour in your left hand. It`s not difficult. Purling with 2 colours is a bit more complicated, but you don`t need to learn that at the start.

Got Snips and Samples Yesterday
|
Mine came yesterday. Wonderful to get them early - more thinking and planning time. Maybe that`s not so good as I visualize those white boxes coming across on the ferry!
Thanks Ann, keep them early, we`ll buy more.

HELP!!! Short row darts when top down
|
Billie, from the top down, your first set of short rows will have the fewest stitches between the W&Ts and each further set as you descend will have more stitches in the middle and fewer on each side.
To check the amount of increase you need, put on a t-shirt that fits well so that the shoulder seam does not move around. Tie a piece of elastic around you where you want the sweater to end. Check that the elastic is parallel to the floor all around (level). Now measure from the shoulder seam over the point of your bust down to the elastic (trick is to do this while standing upright - find a friend). Write down the number. Next, measure from the same spot but down your back to the elastic. Write down and subtract from the first number. The difference is the amount of extra length you need to add. Figure how out many short rows you need to add to get this length - two rows per set.
Be careful about the distance between your bust points plus extra for ease, you do not want a pointy sweater.

Les, the Phoebe Pullover

Les, I`m having trouble getting the site to accept my password to log in. I can put the item in my cart, but that`s as far as I get. Something`s wrong.

books - shawls and cabling
|
Oh yes, I have all three. Cables Untangled is a great book - it helped me to keep my sanity in Nov and Dec when I couldn`t do much except knit. I made covers for two cushions (18" square) for DD and two scarf and toque sets for the boys. The patterns are very adaptable to different kinds of projects. Charts shown knitted into sweaters can be used for other projects - scarves, the backs of mitts, hats, afghans, and cushion covers.

highland wool

It pills but the little bobbly bits are easy to remove. Ehen I knit it tighter rather than looser there seems to be less pilling. It`s great to knit with.

I`m snowed in!
|
Keep that snow all down your way. We have been snowed-in for several days twice this winter - not supposed to happen in Lotusland! Being snowed-in was partly because of the new road maintenance company - 1) not having a snowplow on the island, just a truck with a blade on the front 2) not starting to clear when the snow started, when all you have is said truck and blade you cannot wait until there is 10 inches of snow on the ground and then wander out to do something. Mark couldn`t make it up the middle hill one day and had to walk about a mile. I got a LOT of knitting done.
SK lives where they are supposed to get snow and cold!

mobius scarf
|
The bottom row of the cast-on gives you the stitches for the other half of the moebius. The total number gives you a figure 8. Mark the beginning of the row and knit around both loops until you get back to the marker - one complete row. When you are ready to cast-off, just continue around a whole row.
Cut a strip of paper, tape it into the moebius shape, and set it in front of you when you are knitting. Really helps in visualizing what you are doing.

Knitting Retreats
|
The flyers are ready for the retreats on Salt Spring in June and the Welsh Borders in late September. The knitters who went to Scotland have had a few days for first dibs, so now open to all. Early bookers get best choice of rooms - there are photos on the property site for the Welsh adventure! Elann Knit-In will be late October, but don`t have dates yet.
E-mail me if you would like a copy of the flyers: truemana@telus.net

Thanks, Benne. Agree about the `editing`, but St.Seraphina Knits did send me a free pattern of my choice for pointing out an error - nice touch.
