Alice and lace knitters, I need help
|
I think it is a 6 stitch and 8 row repeat. ROW 2 starts the pattern with 6 stitches plus one garter stitch = seven stitches. ROW 9 completes the first repeat and the increase of another 6 stitches (rows 8 and 9) ROW 10 is 3 repeats of the 6-stitch pattern + one garter stitch to finish. ROW 18 is 5 repeats + one garter stitch
Try this and post again if it doesn`t work out. I going to pick up DS and two friends in the village, but I`ll check on-line when I get back.

|
Hi Many, many thanks. Sorry not to have answered sooner. Had 6 big kids ( my 2 + four of their friends)here for the weekend, so didn`t get much else done. An impressive group - 3 are writing their PhD theses - one English, one Classics, and one Music.

From flat to round?
|
Good pattern for knitting in the round. Before you start, click on the button labelled `skematics`. I had trouble printing this part, but by putting the diagrams on notepad (Control C) and then into MicroSoft Word (Control V), and a long wait, it printed. Anyway: Body: Cast on the stitches for back and front, join. Place a marker at the start of the round and at the halfway point. Knit the ribbing K2 P2, round and round for the 3 inches. Then, just knit for 11 more inches (it`ll come out in stocking stitch). Put aside.
Sleeves: Cast on the 38 stitches, using a short circular (pull extra cable out in a loop between two stitches as necessary), OR two circular needles, OR 4 or 5 double points, join. Place marker at start of row. Knit the rib round and round. Change to just knit (stocking stitch). To work the increases, knit to 3 stitches before the marker, make 1, knit 3 stitches past the marker, make 1. Make these increases according to the instructions. Knit until you you get to `Establish Pat St` Repeat for second sleeve.
Yoke: with a long circular needle, you are now going to arrange your pieces in order, back, left sleeve, front, right sleeve with a marker between each section. Use a different colour marker for the start of each row (between right sleeve and back). Knit an `Establish Pat St` row around all your pieces, following the instructions for each part. Row 2 and all the even # rows will be KNIT (not purl) because you are in the round. Place the pattern stitches as in the instructions. Shape the front neck as in Front, and knit back and forth on the remaining stitches (now purl even numbered rows). You can do this shaping with short rows and then you have a set of live stitches on the needle for the turtleneck.
Turtleneck: Knit in the round with the 80 stitches.
You are done with no sewing!

109 days-how`s your Christmas Knitting???
|
I knit socks for family for Christmas - they get worn. Even an ex-boyfriend now just a friend of DD`s drops not so subtle hints. Much quicker to knit than shawls and the brighter the better.

The P2 will be just at the start of Row 1. There may be a corresponding K3 at the end of Row 2. These changes will make the stitch count work correctly in the pattern. The P1 in Row 2 is into the Slip 1 of Row 1. As long as you check that the P1 hits the S1, you won`t have any trouble with the pattern. The stitch count is to give you the right size.

Hi Suzie
Yes, yes, yes! We can always use yarn, any weight, any colour. Even previously knitted yarn goes into afghans. Now that some of the Monday night knitting group here on Salt Spring have taken up knitting felted slippers for Dorcas, I can put wool yarn to good use. Small amounts become stripes, just great on kids` slippers. I have a sneaky suspicion that some of these slippers are even going to be worn to bed up north. Many thanks Alice

Hi Sooz Maybe you would like to come to our Knit-In in October here on Salt Spring - October 21-29 - and meet a group of Elannites. It`s bring your knitting, have a good time, help each other, help with the housekeeping. Accommodation and all meals for $60 CDN per night, minimum 2 nights. You get your own bed, but share room/loft (all the singles were bespoke long ago). We`ll fit you in somewhere if you would like to come. Ferry from Tsawwassen comes to Long Harbour on Salt Spring, you don`t even need to go through Swartz Bay - come as a foot passenger and someone will meet you. PS Ann usually comes and visits for a day. Alice Salt Spring Island

Un question pour la tricoter francaise, and anyone else who knows
|
US #15 = British #000 = 10.00mm
This needle has a diameter of 7/16 inch. This is large.
US #19 = 15.00mm which is huge.

OK, this is ridiculous, but - Help, Please!

Granted, my children grew up in Ontario which is not as cold as Alaska, but they did wear toques. Mitts were the nylon waterproof outer layer-fuzzy on the inside ski-mitt type. Scarves were not much worn after the age of 4. Now those toques were worn every day, shoved into school backpacks, hung on hooks at school, dried over the hot-air register in the foyer every night, but washed, not very often, at the end of the season and maybe once in between. So, I wouldn`t worry too much about washability. Maybe fulled or felted wool? Check on the internet for pictures of children in Alaska before you knit earflaps. The toque goes under the the parka hood, and it is possible to be too warm.

Chemo Cap yarn suggestion

I knitted Ann`s pattern in Esprit for my great-niece and she wore it right away. She`s 33, a single mother of 3 boys, who graduated from university this spring. Her doctor let her attend her convocation between bouts of chemo for leukemia. She had a bone marrow transplant at the beginning of July and we`re hoping she`ll be home and with her boys next month. The turban has pizazz!Give it a try.

Scholastic prints/stocks a wide selection of books appropriate for various age levels. Teenage books have stories concerned with teenage issues, and those for 6-8 year olds for their interests. Phone (they`ll have an 800 number) and ask for their catalogue. There will be a key indicating the age level/reading level, you`ll understand this when you look for it, but it`s not obvious to a child or teenager looking through the catalogue - same applies to the books themselves. Scholastic also published a series of little magazines each month during the school year with stories, news events, plays, poetry, cartoons, photos, word games, etc. again geared to age level and reading level. I ordered "Scope" for years for grade 10 general classes. Stimulating and interesting but not overwhelming - the pieces are short.
Best company around for this kind of material.

Sewing machine question
|
If you are getting loopy threads on the backside, tighten your top tension. Just turn the knob a little bit at a time. If the knobs have numbers, look up the default number in your manual, set knob to this and try. If stitch is too loose - tighten, too tight -loosen.
