Camel Hey! I have been wondering the same thing. In my mad frenzie of looking through some magazines to find a pattern to get a yardage figure, I came across an article that was interesting. Interweave Knits Fall 2003 p.46 Brioche Gaiter in Camel Hair. It is made with Classic Elite Blithe 100%baby camel 128 yd On size 7 the guage was 16/in Anyway, it said, what better design for an expensive, exotic and somewhat fragile fiber - soft caressing neck warmer - so light weight you hardly know it`s there. While experimenting with stitch pattern for her design she discovered that she needed a stitch pattern that wouldn`t stress the yarn - cable crossings caused it to break. On page 42 was an article about exotic fibers for knitters - under Camel: Perhaps the most easily attainable fiber featured, camel has long been a staple of the fashion world. While Mongolian herdsmen have used the camel`s long, thick winter fleece in yurts (tents) and coats for many centuries, today`s hand-knitting world prizes the camel`s down. When spun into yarn, camel down rivals fine wool and cashmere in softness - and it`s readily available, typically in blends, from commercial sources.
Both the one-humped dromedary (of the Middle East, northern India and the Sahara Desert) and the two-humped Bactrian cdamel found in northern China and Mongolia, produce down, but the double humped Bactrian camel is by far the main source of fibver. Camel fiber is harvested in three different ways: by hand-cdombing gthe animal, shearing it, or collecting the hair dudring the molting season, which begins in late spring. Camel fiber ranges in color from the typical reddish-brown to brown, gray and even white. The fineness of the fiber varies from 15 - 24 microns in diameter. Cashmere, in comparison is 14 - 19 microns - So...... By looking at it, it looks very loosly spun, so I can see where it would not be real strong. I can`t imagine camel as having very long staple length.I think a scarf would be ideal. I am wondering about a cardigan. What do you think? It would be warm and cuddly!!!!

One Hump Camel I know about the spitting - as owner of a llama... Never been spat at, but have been in the line of fire a few times. Harry mainly spits at the sheep when he is trying to eat, and they are wanting his food!
I plan on getting some for scarfs for myself and gifts. I am considering a cardigan, but the more I think about is, the more I am leaning away from it. I would love one, but the extra care may not be worth it.Plus the small stitch guage would make it a long project.

Camel I pretty much have the color picked out, but...I may just stick to some scarves. I don`t know. I am a Pisces - the fish swimming in opposite directions. I can never make up my mind!
Better buy me one of those lottery tickets (NC refuses to pass the lottery!!)

Camel My first order from Elann - I got enough of the parchment for a cardigan, and what I have left over (should be at least 6 skeins) to make a scarf for me, and my DSL and some Mocha to make a scarf for DH. Now for sure I will have to check on knitting needles on my flight!!

My silkworm spit arrived too! What color did you get? and what are you going to make? I finally placed my first order (during school - I gave the kids busy work - I don`t usually do that!!) Ordered the camel - then watched as it so very quickly sold out of colors! It is amazing how fast it goes!!!
