Another Poll: Dreams about Knitting? To quote the Interweave advertisement...

"Do you knit in your dreams?" Or have dreams about knitting?

I`d have to say that MOST nights, I have dreams about knitting and wake up in the morning thinking about it... and I`m guessing it`s because that`s the last thing I do before going to sleep. (Right now I have a lot of sewing going on, some little girl dresses with gold thread and pearls embroidered into the yokes, so last night I dreamed about Baby Silk and Zephyr yarn, and knitting them with a strand of gold thread carried along... but I don`t think I`ll try it, because in the dream, the gold thread made the knitted fabric scratchy, and ruined my precious Baby Silk!)

But I`d like to read about other people`s knitting dreams! C`mon, now, I know you all have them!

Odd but harmless cat idea And to think people have always told me I have a wild imagination... you guys are certifiably "out there" :)

Cat Success... Thank-You! I cannot BELIEVE it has really been solved this easily, but so far, it seems to be a miracle... I poured, liberally, vinegar and pinesol all over the top edge of the waist-high stone wall that surrounds us here... and for two whole days now, nary a sign of a cat. And the pinesol actually seems to have overpowered (or killed?) the odor. I am elated. What`s more, the 99 cent store has big jugs of pine cleaner, so when ever the pine smell starts to fade, I`ll be "refreshing" the stone wall again!

I`m still keeping all the other ideas, in case this turns out to be too good to be true, but it appears that this was just the right amount of diversion, and the cats have found a new sand lot. Oh Happy Day!!!

MacChick - Zephyr and Shawls I agree with Benne... I want that book! I`ve actually had a search for it on eBay active for a long time now, but no luck... I need to just break down and buy it new!

YES YOU NEED A SCANNER OR A CAMERA, BECAUSE WE WANT TO SEEEEEEEEEE!

Thanks for the tip about where to find Zephyr... I`m going to try what I have in a lace pattern, first... gosh, lace in lace-weight yarn... it is something I have never actually tried to do in anything finer than fingering, usually DK and up.

Knitting Pattern The XRX book, "Kids • Kids • Kids," (a book everyone who knits for kids just HAS to have!) has a pattern on pg 96 called "The Pony." Finished height is 30" and length from ears to tail is also given as 30", so this is a good-sized horse. Big enough for a toddler to lean up against or sit on top of while listening to horse stories!

peruvian baby silk Soooo... you still have some Baby Silk left, huh? Where, exactly, do you live, again? And what room do you keep the Baby Silk in? And What time is everyone in the house fast asleep? And what is the quickest way to get to the room with the Baby Silk when everyone is asleep? C`mon... enquiring minds want to know...

Five People... Well, now, I will have to stick with knitters, just beacause my daily life seems to devoid of anyone who has any interest in knitting, except for this place, which makes me want to just list everybody here, but Farmin` Garmon beat me to it on that idea, so my next shot is to take advantage of the fact that we can resurrect the dead for this, and that would have me starting with Queen Victoria, because anybody who was still knitting from her deathbed and supposedly asking for more yarn in her final delirium is definitely addicted to the art, but on the other hand, I don`t know anything else about her knitting life, so I`m not going to give her one of those top five spots after all...

1. Mary Thomas, because her books tell me that she explored, to almost obssessive detail, the logistics of garment construction and of how knitting works.

2. Ann Feitelson, because I don`t think there`s ever been anyone who understood and experimented with the intricacies of color and how it effects and is effected by every aspect of the way you knit with it.

3. Mrs. G. Banks, who reputedly knitted doll clothes with sewing thread on dressmakers` pins as a child and went on to publish knitting books... because anyone who had that kind of determination as a child, must`ve been the kind of person who could figure out how to knit literally anything, in any manner... and can you imagine how much fun the most frustrating knitting puzzle would be around a mind like that?

4. Sheila McGregor, because her penchant for collecting, organizing, and copying into chart form all those pages and pages of Fair Isle design patterns seem to indicate a person who is as driven to make sure the knitting knowledge is accessible and shared as she is to find ever more of it.

5. Barbara Walker, because all those thousands upon thousands of stitch patterns tell me this is another person driven to seek and share, and because I can never re-read often enough her Knitting From the Top, and I think it shows an extremely inventive mind as well as someone who is truly tuned in to the "spirit" of knitting... although that itsn`t really the right word... and I would want to put Elizabeth Zimmermann in this category, too, but that would be a sixth person, but since they were knitting pals, I`ll sneak her in with Barbara anyway... they can carpool to the guild meetings, o.k.?

--MacChick, who suspects all those people are already here, but operating under different names!

And, oh, P.S., if we hire entertainment, let`s pick James Norbury... I`ve heard his knitting TV shows in England were informative AND a real hoot!

Another White Buffalo question Are you talking about shagging the mittens, or actually knitting in chunks as you go? Because you just gave me a great inspiration... this would be the perfect stuff for shagging a pair of mittens or a hat... aw, man, and I was going to resist the urge to get some of this, but what a perfect excuse to justify it... how can I claim to be on a quest to knit the warmest hat ever if I pass this one by? I hpe you post a picture when you finish your mittens... show on of them turned inside-out, so we can see the fluffy inside!

Dale Kolibri Cotton Kolibri is legendary, and that big, magic word, "Egyptian" is not easy to find. (On the other hand, I just got some of the Zitron Samoa, and I do have to admit that I like it even more than Kolibri! Though I would have no problem using both in the same project, if one or two of the colors I need are only availble in the Kolibri.)

Tchemgrrl your hat is fabulous! Wow! You picked some great color combinations! And everything shows up so well... your tension must be perfectly even... how do you hold your yarns for your Fair Isle knitting... one color in each hand, both in the left, or both in the right? I`m always very curious about this, and whatever you are doing, it looks like it is really working!
3/2/2004 10:10:36 PM
Yes Marion I want that pattern! I`ll be emailing you for that pattern, too... your stuff always totally blows my mind... I hope you`ve donated at least one of something to a museum somewhere... it`s really amazing!

Bets, How You Gave Me Knitting Time... Remember that Apple Butter recipe you posted (Feb22)? Well, it has been a real hit around here... initially, just for the smell. Then the taste... oh, and it was roundly decided to use it on pancakes. Now I`m a bit of a health nut, so I make them with whole wheat and oats and blah, blah, blah (so I can feel o.k. saying "yes, you can have these every day if you want, they are good for you")... and with apple butter, they are more popular than ever, so I got tired of making them daily and made an enormous batch, thinking I`ll just freeze them, then pop them in the toaster as needed. Well, it was a really huge batch, and you know how pancakes are... you really canNOT leave them alone... you have to stand there and wait, flip, wait... I strapped on one of my fanny packs with a pair of socks WIP in it and started knitting. Flip pancakes, knit a couple rows, flip, knit, flip, knit... I have NEVER enjoyed cooking so thoroughly! For the first time ever, it did not seem like a waste of time! I just tossed another batch of fruit in the crockpot tonight... we are now throwing in pears, cherries, the strained fruit leftover from making cordials, coconut milk, you name it... add a bunch of cinnamon sticks and wait for that wonderful aroma (it`s magnificent by morning!). And when the pancake supply gets low... ahh, more knitting time for me! I think of you every time somebody says, "I love that smell!"

peruvian baby silk September Leaf? You mean Lakers Gold? I love the idea that if I trim off some branches and vines, I get the "leaf"!!!

Have you seen this Twin Set? I`m thinking the cardigan part of it would be really lovely in either the silk or the cashmere... (Austermann Stricktrends 012 - Designs 35 and 36)... now you have me looking at patterns on Elann all the time, too... as if yarn was not enough!

Tchemgrrl your hat is fabulous! I`m so glad you replied to this... I am always so curious about how people manage tension in color work. I just finifshed a hat that turned out disastrous... I should post a picture of it... the lining went well, than I used the Fair Isle stranding techinique for the beginning of the outer layer, and that was going well, then I tried to use the tvaandsstickning technique of twisting the yarns between every stitch to get a design into the major part of the outer layer, and I was so caught up in getting that part right that I lost track of where the stranded patterns around it were (so they just look like a mess of broken swabs of colo), and of the tension, so it pulled in terribly and the outer layer is much smaller in diameter than the lining. Oh, and it took as long as a whole sweater would`ve taken! I can laugh about it now, but I have a lot of practicing to do before I get that idea to come out right!!! Yes, I`d love to see your pattern... I`ll send you my snail mail address!
