Araucania No, it isn`t mercerized, but that doesn`t neccessarily mean it is going to shrink alot, either. I mean, how many times have you worked wth cotton and had the opposite problem over time and wished it WOULD shrink back to its original size?

However, I`m very glad you brought that issue up, because I`m generally so focused on trying to come up with ways so it won`t stretch out, that I wouldn`t have thought about the shrinkage possibility. So, thanks to you, I`m going to not just knit a swatch (I`m actually persnickety about always doing that), but test wash it every possible way, too, measuring before and after each wash to see if it shrinks vertically, horizontally, or neither. I`m betting it won`t shrink at all, but that`s just a hunch.

The test I`m most eager to try is whether it will pill. That seems so often to be the side effect of soft yarns... but not always, Pima and Egyptian cottons can be very soft without pilling (maybe because the fibers are longer?), so I can`t wait to see.

Ladies -vs- Real Women Oh, that was too funny!

But now comes the embarrassing part... I really want to know if the peeled potato for oversalted food actually works... is that awful... I mean, if that actually works, I would do it... (and hey, then there`d be one less potato growing eyes).

And the ice cubes thing... I think I`m going to try that with oatmeal... then I can use the oatmeal cubes to cool down hot oatmeal, instead of watering it down with plain ice cubes. oh... wait! I`m gonna do one step better... apple butter ice cubes. Oh yea, baby, that`s the ticket... `cause we are up to our ears in apple butter now.

It`s just a bit past midnight... should I go make some cubes right now, or have I finally completely lost my mind?

(It occurs to me that if I need a second opinion on that, I probably don`t want to know the answer.) I think I`ll just shut up and go knit some more on the Casual Cables. That sweater is always happy to see me. It`s wagging its little yarn tail at me right now. (Does that mean it wants a puppy bisquit, too?) (How abut a snausage? Do they even make those anymore? Did I ever tell you guys about the time my sister left a bag of them on the table for her dog and my Dad thought they were people snacks and ate the whole bag during a football game then asked why nobody bought any ranch dip to go with them?)

Darn! I got sidetracked! Again! I`m gonna go make some cubes and then knit for awhile. See you guys later.

Araucania Pill test = washing machine, several times, even if you have no earthly intention of EVER sending the final garment through the machine... the swatch though... I rub it with sand paper, send it through the machine, tuck it under my heel inside my sneaker and go for a jog, any abusive & abrasive thing I can think of...

Some yarns (like Uros) will fuzz and felt for all they are worth but staunchly refuse to pill. I admire that kind of spunk! Good yarn. Some (like Sonata) snub their noses at every test and keep on insisting they are still brand-new. I call that Grace Under Fire, and buy more of it. Some say, "Honey get out your sweater shavers and any other thing ya got, but you`ll never get all the little balls off me, never!!!" You can guess what I say to them. And then there are those ones that start pilling while I am still knitting with them... I use them for stuffing in toys... what else can you do with them?

MacChick Yes, there are some leaf and diamond designs in purl stitches around the yoke, just simple things; they`ll look better after it`s been blocked. The cables have eyelets worked into alternating sides, and those are alternating with plain cables.

The yarn is the Peruvian Collection Pure Alpaca, in "Bisque" color.

Has anyone here ever… There`s a pattern for a Bohus hat in "Homespun, Handknit" that is a nice easy introduction to Bohus style knitting, but I never tried any of those authentic yarns. The "Knitting Around the World" book by Threads has a good article on Bohus knitting, too. I`ve been waiting for the "Poems of Color" book to get here through Inter Library Loan for a few weeks, beacause I`m very curious about the whole Bohus thing. Alice, is the Blue Shimmer you refer to in that book? Please, oh please post a picture of your sweater, and don`t wait until it`s all done!!!!

Thanks! For an incredible color palette, I don`t think anything beats Jamieson & Smith`s. I first got onto them when doing Fair Isle. (Their cobweb lace yarn is to die for!!!) Their 2ply jumper weight comes in 25g/125yds, which is nice because when you are using a zillion colors, you really don`t want to be paying for 50g balls of every color. The yarn also comes in big cones, if you want a lot of a certain color. They also have a nice range of yarn weights finer and heavier than the jumper weight. Go here to see the colors and order directly from them:

http://www.shetland-wool-brokers.zetnet.co.uk/2plyjump.htm

Now I must add that although I ordered the shade samples packet directly from them, I did NOT get the yarn this way... that international shipping is way too expensive. I got the yarn itself from NeedlepointJoint.com. These people get the cones then wind the yarn off into 1 oz hanks... last summer they were charging $2.75 for 1 oz, which I thought was very reasonable and more effecient than buying 50g balls of so many colors.

Also, if you don`t want to buy a color packet from overseas and wait forever for it to get here, Needlepoint Joint does this cool thing where if you give them the colors you want in DMC embroidery floss numbers, they will get the closest match possible in the yarn you want. Talk to them on the phone, their website isn`t set up for very much (you can`t even place orders through it). Their phone number is 1-800-660-4255. They are open M-Sa at 10:00 AM, Utah time.

Before I die I want to go to that yarn store, in person, with about a thousand dollars! I`ve heard it takes up a whole city block now... has anyone ever been to it? I`ve even brainwashed my little daughter... she was putting together a puzzle-map of the U.S. and trying to name the capitols, and when she got to Utah, she said, "Ogden, Utah! Home of the Needlepoint joint!" I reluctantly told her that even though Mommy thinks that is the whole purpose of Utah, they actually have a different location for their state capitol...

Uros Hey, make sure and post a picture of felted Uros! I really love the Uros, too, and I know it really, in its heart of hearts, wants to be felted, dreams and fantasizes about being felted, prays that its owner will do a project like the one you`re describing!
