Well, it isn`t good business, but don`t take it personally... you never know what all is behind it. They could have all kinds of troubles or problems that are keeping their minds in an unhappy mode. Wish them good health and don`t take it personally.
We don`t have a yarn shop anywhere within a hundred miles of us... mine is Elann! The people here are always great, but they do tend to get you hopelessly addicted...
The short row/wrapped stitches technique you`re describing sounds like the one described here: http://www.knitting-and.com/knitting/tips/wrap.htm and you`ll also find it in most any sock knitting book, I think. Also try getting a copy of the Vogue Ultimate Knitting Book or the Reader`s Digest Knitting Handbook from your local library.
When I first tried wrapped short rows, what helped me was to use bits of contrast colored yarn to mark where the wrap was, epsecially on yarns with fuzz, texture, or other qualities obscuring me from seeing where the wrap was. After awhile, you`ll be able to see the wraps as glaringly different from just another stitch and you won`t need to mark them. Good luck.

Knitting Rhyme 4 Kids

I found this... relates to earlier threads, but probably of interest to many:
The Waldorf School uses this knitting rhyme to help children remember what to do: In through the front door Around the back Out through the window And off jumps jack.

NO!!!! Swatch, wash, block... you KNOW it is always quicker in the end than ripping out again (she says, admitting she has lost count of how many times Casual Cables has been ripped so far...)

Still got plenty of colors of Uros, you say? hmmm... better lock yer doors `n windows at night... I can track that stuff down from 3,000 miles away...
I "wasted" all mine on hats and mittens (although they are lovely soft fluffly hats and mittens!)... none left for sweaters... I`ll wait patiently until next year, when Uros re-appears... but if the colors change too much, and you have something they no longer make... well, I won`t forget that you said you have "plenty"!!!

Shui Kuen,
Casual Cables is not written as a top-down, though... I hope I didn`t misdirect you the way I worded things.
B. Walker`s book WAS my guide in translating a "regular" cardigan into a top-down one. I stumbled across her book quite recently, and couldn`t stop reading it... it really struck a chord... it was exactly what I`d been trying to experiemnt with on my own, so it saved me a ton of time in failed experiments to have someone else already have the info in a book. In fact, I finally bought a copy right here from Elann, after trying to renew my library copy last time and finding out somebody else had already put in a reserve request for it! I realized I couldn`t be wihtout that book! Too many ideas I`m about to try from it! WIPs relying on it!
I admit that I had trouble getting past the excruciatingly ugly so-70`s fashions in the photos throughout the book, but the actual text and ideas and patterns are worth their weight in gold!
This was the first time I tried knitting something based on the book`s guidance, and I chose the rounded yoke style, because it suits the recipient of the sweater best... but the original Casual Cables sweater is made with set-in style sleeves, and these are explained very nicely in the B. Walker book, too. Everything went VERY smoothly. My numerous rip-outs of this sweater have been purely because I keep changiing my mind about how I want to knit this or that part of it.
Now one other thing... B. Walker has you knitting the sleeves one at a time. Doing both simultaneously on 2 circs was just my variation, because I always do pairs of anything that way (I`m terrible at making myself stick to a plan, forever making changes along the way, so I find it quicker to do pairs of things simultaneously than to meticulously write down every little change I made along the way, then have to keep referring to notes while I knit a second sleeve, sock, mitten, or whatever, AND try not to make any new changes).
I`m going to use the same book as a guide for top-down sleeveless construction, along with suggestions made here for the neckhole and actual turtleneck shaping, to remake a pink turtleneck for my daughter... as soon as my Esprit arrives AND I finish the Casual Cables!
My suggestion on that book would be the same one they tell yu when you are rock climbing... forge ahead and don`t look down... because the patterns work beautifully, but the photos are scary-ugly! You can adapt pretty much any pattern you have to this style, taking into account that color, texture, lace patterns worked this way will be upside-down (which improves some of them!)... just don`t look down at those horrid photos! Goodness, gracious, I honestly think the woman used cheap acrylic yarn, too... but I guess it was a new, cool thing to try in those days. Her ideas and patterns are timeless, though.

Well, I hate to start a frenzy, but when I went to buy some yesterday, the natural was already gone, and too many of the other colors were dwindling... it reminded me of how nicely I resisted the urge when all of you were talking about Brilla, then when I finally caved, all my first choices for colors were gone... I DEEPLY regret not having gotten the very lightest pink... my daughter loved it sooooo much. And no itch! And lots of lovely drape! I consoled her with thoughts of "Endless Summer" yarns to come and the hopes that a pale shell pink may show up in one of those yarns, but I sure wish I`d gone to see the Brilla before the pink was all gone!
"Yarn Abstinence" is a bad thing. Very, very bad. It will give you nightmares full of guilt and regret. And while you may ocasionally regret having spent too much money on yarn, you rarely have those regrets haunt you persistently for weeks or years, the way a missed yarn can, because you can always sell a yarn overdose to somebody else and get your money back if a purchase really does bother you.
You can`t "undo" a regretted action when the action was buying and the yarn is all gone!
Your question now is not "what color should I get?" but "What color is left?"
Don`t make this mistake again. DRINK YER ALE, LASSIE! (or: "C`mon, gal, slam it like a cowboy!)

So you`re the one who got the last of the Antique pink... well, hope you`re happy with it, `cause it`s all gone now... and the spearmint is almost gone, too. You got it just in time!!!
Look, I`m pretty frugal... I only got one each of the turquoise and the raspberry to make a top for DD, but I really love the natural and the lapis, and I had a vivd dream that the natural was gone... I mean when I looked for it last night IT WAS ALL GONE, I tell ya! Now it appears it is there after all, but I`m calling that a premonition... and Farmin`s right about the weekends... how many times have I missed a yarn thinking "I`ll wait and put it in with my order for the yarn that is coming out on Tuesday..." but by Monday it`s already too late.

MY BAD!!!!
The Natural is NOT gone...
STILL THERE... NOT GONE!!! WHEW!!!
That was just a bad dream, apparently... the Tangerine and Antique Rose are all gone, and Spearmint is almost gone... but the Natural is still there. Whew!!!
Buy now!!!
It was probably a cosmic warning that the Natural will be gone sooner than we think!

Well, it is SUPPOSED to knit itself whenever I`m not working on it, but either it`s confused or just being defiant, because whenever I go back to work on it, it hasn`t accomplished a darn thing!
Oh, it plays with the yarn balls like some mischievous kitten overdosing on catnip. And it flings point protectors all over the room like a little boy with a superball. It even tucks its arms shyly up into its yoke and bats its yarn tails like a little flirt. But it refuses... flat-out REFUSES to knit a single stitch! I`ve even tried threatening to rip it out again... all it did was click its circs at me, "tsk, tsk," as if to remind me that threats are never a prudent strategy.
But just when I get really ticked off at this behavior, it curls up in my lap, nuzzles my hands and gives one of those deeply relaxed sighs that tells me it just loves being knit upon... I sing gently to it... "purl 2, knit one, yarn over, knit two together, knit 3, purl two, knit one, purl two..." and it falls asleep right there in mid-cable.
But yea, it is SUPPOSED to be knitting itself.
Maybe after it goes to my sister it`ll at least learn to wash itself, but somehow I doubt it. It`ll just play around, cuddle, and act all cute at her house, too.

No, it isn`t mercerized, but that doesn`t neccessarily mean it is going to shrink alot, either. I mean, how many times have you worked wth cotton and had the opposite problem over time and wished it WOULD shrink back to its original size?
However, I`m very glad you brought that issue up, because I`m generally so focused on trying to come up with ways so it won`t stretch out, that I wouldn`t have thought about the shrinkage possibility. So, thanks to you, I`m going to not just knit a swatch (I`m actually persnickety about always doing that), but test wash it every possible way, too, measuring before and after each wash to see if it shrinks vertically, horizontally, or neither. I`m betting it won`t shrink at all, but that`s just a hunch.
The test I`m most eager to try is whether it will pill. That seems so often to be the side effect of soft yarns... but not always, Pima and Egyptian cottons can be very soft without pilling (maybe because the fibers are longer?), so I can`t wait to see.
