Sonata cotton Well, I just ordered 20sks of Sonata as it sounds like you have been pleased with it. A few years ago I started collecting cottons with the idea that i am pre-menopausal and that someday, I might be too hot for wools! This way I have some time to knit up some nice sweaters in cotton. I have been most inspired by the glaces of Rowan, but the larger gauge yarns knit up so much faster. I`ll let you know what I think when the yarn arrives. Does anyone have an suggestions for patterns?

102 and still knitting Hi everyone,

I just returned from the nursing home were both of my parents have just moved. As I was awaiting their arrival via medical transport, I spent some time meeting and talking to the other residents. I met this awesome woman named Dorothy and she is 102 years old and she is still knitting. It is one of my greatest fears that I will grow too old or infermed to knit. One of the nurses told me that when she doesn`t have yarn, she rips out what she has made and reknits something new. Most of what she was knitting with was acrylic (aghh!) I promised to bring her some nice yarn and she was such a dear. She didn`t want me to go to much bother. I told her I had a whole room full of yarn and it would be no bother at all. Hopefully I will get her to teach me a thing or too.
Pat.

102 and still knitting Hello Sandra D

From the little I have seen, it looks like she is using that acrylic varigated yarn, the kind of yarn that comes 1.00/sk at the local drug store. she is wearing a lovey styled sweater made from such yarn. Her knitting looks very good, but the Yarn!

I guess I am having this reaction because this is the kind of yarn my grandmother used to knit with in her older years when she taught me to knit. She died when I was 17. I became passionate about knitting some years later when I discovered the yarns of Rowan. I can`t tell you how many times I have wished that I could have turned my grandma onto such wonderful yarn. So I guess I will have the chance to do it with Dorothy. I plan to bring her some nice wools, cottons etc. so she can have her pick.

Sonata cotton I did not get any Esprit, should I have? I bought 20sk of the violet/purple color. Because I have been such a Kaffe Fassett knitter in the past I only focused on collecting a few skeins of this and that, but for the past year I have been brancing out into other designers. Now I am trying to buy a bulk of one color for more solid projects and I have so many skeins of accent colors. For this yarn I have a lot of turquoise and teal cottons, lime, lighter violets, get the idea, it is endless isn`t it. Of course the trick is can I use it all before I die? LOL

102 and still knitting WOW!!!

I never expected such wonderful enthusiam for Dorothy, but I shouldn`t be surprised because it is exactly how I responded to her.

I just got back from clearing out my parents` place at their assisted living home. I will be visiting there new place where Dorothy lives on Tuesday. I will print out this exchange we are all having and share it with an administrater at the Friends Nursing Home and I will find out what is acceptable. I`ll then let everyone know what we can do.
Thanks, PatW

Bets did you see Pat W`s knitting? Thank you, thank you all for your very kind comments. This pattern was a complilation of several different patterns. It began with the dragon pattern in Rowan Mag. 18 by Kim Hargreaves. In that pattern the dragon is on the front and carries around to the back. I knitted this coat for my friend Jean and she wanted the dragon to be entirely on the back. My knitting friend, Dana took the graph and melded into a complete dragon pattern that when inverted could fit on the back. I have the graph for anyone who would like a copy. I also kept some kind of notes on what I did and the chinese motif that makes up the bands. Anyone wanting my notes and graph send me your address and I will send copies. I don`t know how to scan it in for email. Again, thanks for the praise. I think that you are all very accomplished knitters also and I am going to learn a lot from you all.

102 and still knitting Benne,

These are very good points you bring up. Also, I just remembered that we have to consider institutional laundry service. We shouldn`t have any fiber that can`t go in an industrial washer/dryer. I`m on it!!

Bets did you see Pat W`s knitting? Yes, I agree I am an accomplished knitter, but believe it or not, I have never learned how to sew my knitted pieces together well. I have never learned to do short rows or diagonal knitting and I struggle with designing and making my own patterns. My Italian grandmother who taught me the basics of knitting before she died could look at a picture and knit it for you and it would fit perfectly. She could read and write english but she never mastered the art of reading english knitting instruction. But she did`nt realy need to. We could cut a picture out of a catalog mail it to her with the yarn and it came back to you exactly like the picture. I guess that`s my bench mark. I also have never been able to knit those beautiful fair isle sweaters because I can`t get over using steeks and then cutting the sweater. I have to conquer that fear some day. Anyway, I am sure there are things I can learn from all of you, as I read and hear about your experiences with knitting. And I hope to be encouraging to you all and help in anyway I can to encourage your art. I have two books that I think will help me with techniques: New Directions in Knitting, and Knitted Sweaters for Every Season, anyone have any experience with these books. I have only had time to do one project that went from cuff to cuff. It was a lot of fun:).

I have this fantasy of one day taking one of those Knitting Cruises and taking classes all day, or attending a Stitches Convention where I can emerse myself if classes. My DH says that if I want a cruise, he will put deck chairs all around our living room and me and my friends can knit to our hearts delight and he will serve us food and rum drinks with those pretty umbrellas LOL! I told him it would not be the same, but we might like to try it out just the same:)

102 and still knitting2 To all of those interested in donating yarn and supplies to Dorothy our 102yr. old knitter. I spoke to an administrator of the nursing home today. The place does not have a computer available to residents, plus her eyesight is not great, so the option of setting up an account with Elann is not practical. Marie, the administrator, thought she should have Dorothy`s daughter talk directly to me so I can let her know what we want to do for her mother. I will keep everyone posted on the outcome. Thanks again for your enthusiam.

indian floral top Hello Point mousse

I have this issue, is it the vest pattern with embroidery on it? It is by Pam Allen and it is called Indian Floral Vest. If this is the correct pattern, write to me at knit-and-pearl@this-web.com and give me your address and I will send you a copy of the pattern.

102 and still knitting2 It`s so wonderful to hear all of your great ideas for Dorothy. But I`m afraid I have to be a bit of a wet blanket. You must realized that I have only just met this woman and I am very new to his facility. My parents moved there on Thursday of last week. I have spoken to an administrator about our proposal, and we must wait to get the go ahead. We have to respect Dorothy`s boundaries and those of her family. I will be there again on Easter Sunday. I will see if Dorothy is there and if any family is with her. Some relatives come and take their loved ones out for the day. If I don`t see her Sunday, I will be visiting weekly and I will talk with her more and try to see what she is knitting. I have only seen the one jacket that she wears most of the times I have seen her. I will also look into her needle situation. I like the idea of the special needles for arthritic hands. I will keep everyone posted.

Thanks for the inspiration.

Ort jar... This is not exactly the same thing. But because I knit so many K. Fassett patterns with soo many colors, when I have leftover yarn that is at least a yard long,I wind them into bobbins and put them in a large clear plastic barrel jar that pretzels once came in. Then whenever I start a new multicolored project I go to my jar and pick out all the bobbins that match. I have one jar for wools and one for cottons. They make colorful displays in my knitting room. But I never thought of helping the birds with shorter lengths of yarn. I live on a wooded lot, so I will have to try this out and see what happens.
