Just a thought or Just some thoughts.........
|
One of our customers is a young mom with 3 lively and cute little boys ranging in age from 3-8yo.
She discovered a teeny tiny lump in her breast and has had surgery, chemo which has just finished and is going to start radiation soon.
Carol and I were chatting with her about the hat she was wearing that her mom had knit for her in a flurry when she needed it. It`s funny, as she was so prepared for everything but had forgotten about what to put on her head. It`s cold around here in the winter!! Before she lost her hair, she had let the boys cut her hair and then buzz it so it wouldn`t be noticible when it started falling out in clumps.
Her hat is made of one of the eyelash type yarns in sort of a rust colour which matches her colouring - she was brunette with auburn highlights. She said that she couldn`t wear something blue or purple as I guess it is a substitute for her hair rather than a "hat". When she started the chemo, the staff directed her to a bin with some handknit hats in icky colours and questionable yarn, thus the call to her mom! She says that hats fit a little large when you don`t have hair! I showed her the pic I had posted here last week or so, http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2356599416&category=3105 and we discussed the "dreads" or hair at the back and whe said that she wished her hat had something like that as the nape of her neck feels bare. Anyway, it made me want to make a wonderful hat or some wonderful hats for her to take to the clinic and donate to the hat bin. I thought I`d throw it out to you generous creative folk with the thought that you too might want to do that for the women in your area. Actually, I seem to recall one of you ladies mentioning that you already do this. Now, who was it? Any tips? I can`t imagine looking through the bin while feeling bareheaded and finding hats in flourescent red acrylic. Things to consider: * the head is smaller without hair * brim`s are nice * yarn that isn`t too itchy * something beautiful I had found a website for a book "Annabelle`s Caps" with 26 hat designs by well known knitters/designers. You can see pics of the hats http://www.rosecom.ca/caps/main.html and info about Annabelle at http://www.rosecom.ca/caps/index.html#order Proceeds of the pattern book go back to the Canadian Cancer Society Annabelle was a great knitter "Queen of Entrelac" who died of cancer and her buddies wore their handknit projects and knit during her funeral service as she had wanted them to!! What a great way to use up some of one`s stash, eh? Lesley

My sister lived in Olympia until 5 yrs ago and is now in Everett having remarried. I remember a trip from her place years ago on the Greyhound. I was heading to Vancouver BC to visit and then fly home to Alberta. We drove through Ft. Lewis to make a stop. I knew that name rang a bell!! I love that coast of WA. Lesley

Oh, Bets, you are so clever! Beautiful bags!
|
I love bags! Big bags, little bags but not just any old bag!! These sure fit the bill. I once went on a road trip to San Francisco with 2 friends. I packed in 11 bags. Haven`t lived that one down yet! Lesley

Why I Love MOM
|
I`ve had this sent to me numerous times but it always makes feel - not exactly guilty but something, because I don`t do all those those things before I go to bed! My mantra is manyana (sp). I`d rather do them when I`m fresh . I`m like the woman`s husband.....LOL Les

I think my sister preferred Oly to Everett. She lived in Oly for about 18 years at least and her home was on Bud Bay on Puget Sound. How I loved to visit there. I think it was probably hard for her to leave friends etc. She has a great house in Everett but it`s not on the water. I`ve heard good things of Bremerton (mom and dad lived in Seattle for a year) and Port Townsend rings a bell but not Poulsbo. When my sister remarried, I flew to Vancouver BC, rented a car and drove to Oly. On my return with my 3 kids and my niece, I had a craving for one more feed of seafood. Saw Gig Harbour and thought it sounded like seafood(!) and headed there - is that Galloping Gerdy? It was a little further by road than by map (of course I had to double back too) and nearly missed my flight to Calgary!! Yikes! I had to stay cool calm and collected to keep the troops from finding out my plight. Lesley

What a great idea, Ann! Esprit comes in such lovely colours too. And, it would enlarge the head too somewhat. And the properties of cotton would make it great for summer. Lesley

We did find a place to eat because we were starving - it was by the water but I had visions of something a little different. Food was okay, but unmemorable!! (I remember most occasions by what food was served!! - I`m just that way - DH just doesn`t understand ;-}) But, doesn`t "Gig Harbour" just sound like it should have great little outdoor restaurants on the water? I`ve been thinking about those sample skeins
|
Bets - what was the name/brand of the tie dye kit you used on the positana? We have Wal-mart here but my DH won`t let me go there!!!! I`ll have to sneak in and look but maybe they have it a Michaels or somewhere. Actually, I gave my DD a kit a couple of years ago in her stocking and she hasn`t used it yet. maybe I could find it in her closet - second thought, maybe not!! Sorry to hear about the root canal gone bad. I`d better get my appt made at the dentist to do a long awaited crown so as not to have to have a root canal. Les

Benne - you`re making me envious. Spring is just starting and there is still lots of snow on the mountains to the west. (taking the kids snowboarding on Wed. as they are on their easter break) DH and DS cleaned out a bluebird box and relocated it so that the cats can`t get it. We have Mountain Bluebirds here They are totally blue and the most beautiful flash of colour when you see one. The Western and Eastern Bluebirds have the orange belly. That`s the sign of spring which to me means spring is really here. We saw a pair in our yard last week which instigated DH and DS`s project. DD, Lauren, said that she has a box in her closet which she won years ago at the hort. club - maybe I`ll put it up today - if I find it in "the closet"!! over the years there has been a push for people to put up the nesting boxes for Mountain Bluebirds and monitor them, cleaning them out each spring. People have them on their fence posts and you see these "bluebird trails" running down the line for miles. Apparently they breed in the Canadian prairies and they migrate as far south as Texas and NM. Gee, I`d better get my nesting Lopi out I guess. An onion bag you say, Benne? don`t have one - will have to think of something else or just stick it on some spruce branches. Ah, this will be fun! Lesley

Oh, those are gorgeous socks, Shui Kuen!
|
Shui Keun - Those are just the best!! I want to put them on. How about naming them "Silver Islet" socks?!! (name of a small islet in Lake Superior - source of silver in 1800`s - in Shui Kuen`s neck of the woods.) Les

On with the Araucania!
|
I just finished a little pullover "young hippy" sweater for my great niece`s 3rd Birthday coming up on the 20th (Bets - does that date ring a bell?) I knit it with the Raspberry. Trimmed the neck with single crochet in the Turquiose and added strings at the neck, with a gold bead on the ends to leave open or tie together. This was because I was worried that the neck would be awkward to pull over the 3 year old head, so bound off two stitches about 2-3 inches below the top of the neckline. It turned out quite well and I will send a pic if I can find someone with a digital camera and a model to pose for me. Now I am planning to start a tank for DD#1 in the Turquoise Araucania. Will try the Koko tank from the free pattern section if the yarn looks ok in that gauge. She doesn`t want the islets on it but I may put a row on the bottom as I think it may be too plain without. She is very tiny but long waisted so you may hear me screaming if I don`t have enough yardage!! Lesley
