Einstein jacket in many colors a la Sally???
|
Yes, Alice`s Einstein is beautiful and is very nice without buttons! Hers is a brick red. We all tried it on at the farm.LOL Naomi brought her "Simple Sweater" from the Purl Stitch and we loved it too. (I know I tried it on) The deep mauve yarn she used was cotton with a bit of lycra in it. I think Naomi`s looked nicer than in the book! I really like the button/neck band in that pattern. She said that she knit her sleeves by knitting down rather than the way it suggests and she decreased more frequently so that it wasn`t as loose a fit in the sleeve. On Salt Spring, we had quite a collection of different projects people brought to work on or for the others to look at. Alice has a very nice selection of the latest pattern books which we all poured over, too. I`m glad that Alice mentioned the little purse she knit out of the Berroco Sari, ribbon yarn (in the xmas idea posting). I had forgotten about the one I had started and found it in the corner of my duffle bag!! I think that my DD is even interested in it! The sample at the store in Ganges had a loop and bead closure and another bead on the flap for decoration. The closure bead was rectangular and about 3/4" long.
Heather L is the scarf lady, so if you need any ideas.....she`s done some nice ones in different Noro yarns. Les

when Cheryl, maureen and heather L and I were at the alpaca booth at the fall fair, there was the prettiest pair or fingerless gloves. Benne, I don`t think you DMM would like these ones! LOL They were made from the fine 2-ply alpaca. cuff was black - not too long - just like a regular glove or mitten, the part around the palm was in cream - lace or other fancy pattern (not too holey) and there were about 6 pearly beads knit in, then there were a few more rows of the dark alpaca above the cream. Rather elegant and pretty. Les

I was going to try to work out a pattern for these next week. I think any glove/mitten pattern (I`m guessing at about a gauge of 22 sts/4 inch)as a basis would work. In the "Green Mtn. spinnery Knitting book" there is a pattern for Eric`s Glovelets which could be adapted but I don`t think that they are very pretty as is!! I`d like to try the little beads in them too!
At http://knitting.about.com search for Adult mitten/gloves patterns. There is a pattern for fingerless gloves - haven`t tried it and somewhere, I have a copy of how to knit mittens after establishing a suitable gauge and making `generic" mittens. Am off right away to visit my parents for a couple of days.......will look later.
Great bear ideas, Alice - will have to check them out!! Les

I think you`re right, MacChick, probably any glove pattern would work. I read somewhere that having fingerless gloves, rather than fingerless mitts is best as I guess the mitts tend to rumple on the palm side and want to scrunch up toward the wrist. something to think about especially if it is pure alpaca which wouldn`t have the memory of wool. These were nice as the wrist wasn`t too long. You see pattern for elegant fingerless things which go right up the arm. In my neck of the woods, my arms are covered by sleeves for most of the year. I guess the long ones are more for a fashion statement (some patterns are pretty "goth" looking) than something practical. Never having owned a pair, I think I`d use the fingerless gloves when out and about - would help when searching for keys in purse, etc and better than wearing nothing on my hands or shoving my mitts in my pocket to hunt for keys etc. and losing one... BTW, what do you think of that book "Homespun handknit"? I`ve just seen publisher reviews....... Les

Alice - the lacy alpaca hat
|
Thanks for asking at the alpaca farm for the pattern. I have determined that the lace panels are "Diamond Panel", which I found in a knitting stitch book MIL gave me (The Harmony Guide to Knitting Stitches,1983). They knit a couple of rows after the panels and then began the decreases for the crown. (one row of 10 decreases, then knit 10 rows without decreases, then decreases in ernest!) I think that I should be able to mimic it - once I buy the alpaca! If you`re interested, I`ll can give more detail. Les

You bet I will!! I`m dying to try it, now that I`ve found which lace panel it is! I wonder if I have some equivalent wt. yarn to try it before I get the alpaca!!
I was just thinking about you, Benne, a few minutes ago as we were eating our bacon at breakfast and discussing "Zuckermann`s Famous Pig" and wondering where Charlotte`s babies got to when they blew away!

Alpaca Lace Hat ~a la Saltspring Island!
|
Phew! Here is the pattern for the cream alpaca lacy hat I bought at the fall fair on SP Island. I figured it out and made a mock up which I washed and is drying on the hearth - might help if the fire was on!
Salt Spring Island Alpaca Diamond Panel Lace Hat Materials: Worsted wt or slightly finer yarn. Pure alpaca is the nicest! I tried this with 100% wool – no label, came in what looked like a 4 oz skein. The hat has 7 stitch diamond panels separated by 2 purl sts. Needles: 3.5mm I didn’t have the circular needles to make this hat, so knit it on straight needles. For circ. needles, CO 90 sts to remove the 2 edge sts and figure it out!!
Foundation CO 92 sts Row 1: Sl 1, Knit across Row 2: Sl 1, purl across
Start of Diamond Pattern Row 1: Sl 1 * K2TOG, [k1,yf] twice, K1, sl 1, K1,PSSO, P2 Repeat from * to last st, K1 ROW 2 and every alternate row Sl 1, * K2, P7 Repeat across row to last st. p1 Row 3: Sl 1, * K2TOG, YF, K3, YF, Sl 1, K1, PSSO, P2 Repeat from * to last st, K1 Row 5: Sl 1, * K1, YF, Sl 1, K1, K2TOG, PSSO, YF, K1, P2 Repeat from * to last st, K1 Row 7: Sl 1, * k2, YF, Sl 1, K2TOG, PSSO, YF, K2, P2, Repeat from * to last st, K1 Row 8: As row 2 Repeat these 8 rows
Knit panels of 4-5 diamonds depending on how long/deep you want the hat. The one I bought was 4 diamonds. The one I made was 5 diamonds as I wear mine low on the forehead and want to be able to cover a bit more of my ears.
End lace pattern Row 1: Sl 1, K to end Row 2: Sl 1, P to end
Crown of hat Row 3: (Decrease row )Sl 1, * K2TOG, K7, repeat to last st, K1 Row 4: Sl 1, purl across Rows 5 – 12 continue in straight stockinette st., slipping first st. Begin decreases every other row as follows….. Row 13: Sl 1 * K2tog K6, repeat from * to last st. K1 Row 14 and all wrong side rows Sl 1, purl across Row 15: Sl 1, *K2tog, K4, repeat from *across row Row 17: Sl 1, *K2tog, K2, repeat from *across row Row 19: Sl 1, *K2tog, K1, repeat from *across row Row 21: Sl 1, *K2tog, repeat from *across rowacross row Pull yarn through sts on needle and tie off. Sew up side seam. Voila!

fingerless gloves - IK

Was looking thru the IK Summer issue 2004 (the one with the sleeveless sweater with the drawstring on the cover) and there are two pair of the fingerless gloves. I like them but they look a bit long on the fingers and thumb. Easy enough to change;-} Les
