Please don`t think I`m rude................. Okay, do you actually wear the lovely shawls you knit? I am just shy of 5`4" and a bit weightier than I`d like, and to imagine myself wearing a shawl is a hoot!! The dress code, where I live in the country, is rather unsophisticated, most are horse people (not me, horses make me itch) and pair of jeans (starched and pressed of course) Roper boots and a barn jacket are dress up.......

DH, the postmaster and "the look" Uhh, I just got my 3rd item in 2 days from Elann. DH, the postmaster, just came into the house and handed it to me (our house and store are attached) he didn`t say anything but did give me the look................so, if I want some March offerings I may have to have them prepaid (Paypal) AND sent to a friends address in the city so they don`t cross his path at all ;-} !! P.S. - for those of you who think that knitting him something as a peace offering might be in order, think on, he hates wearing sweaters!!
Les - who likes a man with hairy arms who likes sweaters.

DH, the postmaster and "the look" Ya, big hairy feet, but I like the hairy arms....... He is always in sock crisis, so maybe that`s the answer. Do you have any suggestions for polarweight sock patterns?
Thanks for the idea!

Please don`t think I`m rude................. I`m afraid I`ve given the wrong impression. I`m actually a city transplant to the country so do NOT dress to code out here in the west....... Maybe I should try a western shawl for the next silent auction fund-raiser for our kids sports!! Great idea!

I actually sent the original posting to find out whether the shawl knitting is just to satisfy "the thrill of the chase", a decorative home accent so you look like you actually wear them or for actually adorning ones body!! ;-}

macchick - wool I have a neighbor who breeds wool sheep - she`s got a flexible job and is lambing right now. She knits incredibly quickly, spins, dyes and generally has fun with her fibers. She looks like she stepped off the runway even in her lambing coveralls and gumboots (good bones!!). If she is wearing one of her Aran style sweaters at a show, she sells a ton and takes orders.

Anyway, back to the point of this posting.... she has her fleece made into the same type "yarn" as is referred to here and I`ve bought from her. She tells me to come over even if she isn`t home and come downstairs to her "room" and take what I need and leave a cheque!! Oh, ya, back to my point......... She knows someone who takes this yarn and spins it to -and I`m sure she said fingering weight(!!) and knits socks!! So there ya are spinners!

Darla I noticed in a search for sock advice that you have knit socks. I am doing my very first pair and am at the "graft the toe" stage and ended up with an odd number rather than even number of stitches. will have to rip back a bit but maybe I could entice you to stop by and do it for me on one of your forays to Calgary!! I could maybe even bribe you with a vanilla Latte as per some previous posts ;-} ps, the Millars who own mocha Java in Fernie were customers of ours who lived in this area. I also have a cousin who frequents Fernie for his outdoor pursuits and has buddies there! Small world

I live in a snake pit Poor old Max. Hope he had a good night and that you let him in!!

Fortunately, we don`t have a snake issue here. We do have bears, cougars and the odd bobcat. Our area which was formerly, exclusively ranching country is being broken up into more and more acreages as it is a drivable distance to the city of Calgary for the commuters. The transplanted city people (like myself) get quite ticked when their pet dog gets attacked and days later they find the body up a tree hauled there by a cougar.

2 yrs ago a woman, who spins,found her 11 lambs, who were overnighted in a fully enclosed out building all dead, killed by a cougar who lept through a glass window! Gruesome!

But I`m glad we don`t have snakes!!

A neighbor takes her Jack Russell`s up the hill for daily walks. She says that they are known for their digging after gophers etc. They also love to tree a cat or hassle a squirrel. One day on one of her walks , they ran off ahead and were barking as if they were after a squirrel but they wouldn`t come back. She trudged over and was chastizing them for their misbehavior. She looked up to check out the squirrel and saw this great big BEAR butt in the crotch of the tree!! Peggy`s a distance runner but this day she started her career as a sprinter!!

DH, the postmaster and "the look" Thanks Theresa - I just printed off the sox and I have the yarn. 2 yrs ago I got all hot to make a Lopi pullover with rolled hem etc. started after swatching and then decided I needed a smaller size for the fit I wanted...............ripped it out and the yarn sat til just recently and I started making my slipper sox for people and don`t even miss not making the sweater! Now,I have a great pattern for the sox, thanks to you! I will make them for DH, the postmaster with hairy feet and a pair for my dad with cold feet;-}

Won`t DH the postmaster with hairy feet think I`m wonderful??

Yet Another White Buffalo Question "light weight"? Lighter than what? white buffalo aka Cowichan sweaters/jackets were really "in" in the 70`s. I made one and loved it but it was hardly light! ;-}

Please don`t think I`m rude................. hey, i can visualize a very fine wool shawl worn under a coat with the point of the shawl worn in the front of the chest and the other two narrow points wrapped to the backof the neck so it bunches a bit where it sticks out of the coat.............. thanks a bunch!!

Darla We knitters must all be thrill seekers I think. (a bit of irony there, wouldn`t you say?) It`s that thrill of picking up the yarn and starting the first leg, so to speak, of the project!

Bets - what pattern? My DD likes the long sleeved sweater your DD dragged out of the back of her closet and then received rave reviews from her friend!! Aren`t teenagers just so cute!! I just love the notch below the cable on the sweater. I`m assuming that it is a pullover, not a cardigan. Do you remember which VK book or mag the pattern came from?
thanks

Shui kuen! Great stuff! Love your projects!! Isn`t that interesting, your PC Sierra sweater is the same "basketweave" stitch as the sweater I`m making in Uros. Mine is a v-neck cardigan in a similar colour! Aren`t they lovely to knit!

Open Letter to Fantastic Knitters (Yes, YOU) I`m a new "poster" and just to keep all of you frequent posters straight in my mind, I have a cheat sheet in the drawer with your names and where you live, if you have mentioned it in one of your posts and any other info to help me remember who`s who! Gee, I sound a little creepy don`t I!! Anyway, beside "Fran" I have written "lots of yarn" !! I guess it`s like the little notes one writes for playing the board game of "Clue". Loved that game!!

I was just looking thru my Ram Wools Spring catalogue and saw the shawls page. I always sort of passed the shawls page by before last week when we had our discussion of "do you wear the shawls or just knit them" They have pics of some gorgeous shawls using Fiber Trends patterns: Shoalwater shawl, Leaf Lace Shawl and a very simple shawl called "watercolours simple shawl" ;-}, in a mohair/acrylic. These could quickly put a dent in your stash!! I am particularly attracted to the Shoalwater Shawl which they have knit in a gorgeous blue/navy colourways yarn. The shawl is a wavy pattern like the ocean......Yum!!

Do work on getting your pictures on-line. i`d love to see your projects -- and maybe a pic of you and your stash!
Love from "Miss Scarlet" (I always wanted to be her)

Les and her cheat sheet - should we post bios? Look what I started! This is great! Ya, I just may have to print the responses out and retire my cheat sheet - better yet, update the cheat sheet!

I am a 49 yo Albertan, born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta and now living in the foothills of the rockies south west of Calgary. Lived in East Lansing, Mich. when I was 4 and then at 8yo. when my dad went for another degree - landscape architecture.

My husband was an Engineer working for an international wire-line company when, in 1991 the oil business crashed resulting in lay-offs. Mike liked the idea of becoming master of his own destiny so we bought the Millarville General Store and moved out of the burbs to the country and live in a house attached to the store. The site is historic but the original store had burned 2 years before we bought and was quite lovely, thus part of the appeal for the transplanted city folk. Our kids were weany (ages 3-7), the school just down the road and the community very active and friendly. Many things to immerse ones self in. (ie. volunteer!) fun is a house concert (music at someones home sharing appetizers and wine), a potluck bookclub or driving one of the back roads behind a rancher on horseback moving his cattle to the next pasture.

I am a dietitian, and recently got back in the field part-time, consulting for a program called Healthy Moms, Healthy Babies. I have a large territory and do home visits with pregnant women to assess and teach them. I love it.

Learned to knit when I was about 5 from my friend who had learned from her mom. My mom knit, occasionally, but hadn`t thought to teach me. Didn`t knit again till I was about 13. have continued sporadically - when the kids were babies and on until they told me that sweaters itched them and I didn`t like synthetics. I started up again recently for my nieces babies and now for whoever I please!!! Just yesterday I traded a pair of Lopi slippers for some Nine West shoes. Not bad!!

I love good food, reading, socializing and gardening when the mood strikes me and the weather is good.

Have 3 kids. The oldest is in her second year of Nursing in Calgary at the U. Next is in grade eleven, also a girl, who loves sports. Youngest is a boy who is in grade 9 and also a sport lover. I drive lots to games, practices, tourneys etc. Nothing like a long drive to connect with ones teen!

Hope I didn`t put you to sleep. I find you "posters" a great bunch and look forward to your whit, wisdom and support.

Casting on... I hear ya! It only happens when I`m doing something on a circ needle and casting on the 256 stitches and it`s a hairy yarn which requires some work to rip out that cast on row!
