In reply toa few questions put forth.

I`ve never been to Lake Cowichan, but a friend just told me she has rented a vacation property (old historic house)on the Cowichan River, just 5 min from the Lake (somewhere!). It looks like a beautiful area.
Was out yesterday afternoon going to greenhouses and was chatting with the owner of one who said that she and her DH have recently bought recreation property off the road to Bamfield from Pt. Alberni (on the inlet). She`s looking forward to the end of this busy season to go out there! Les

Felting a purse?
|
Heather I`ve done just two bags now so wouldn`t be what you`d call an expert.......but, I am too lazy/impatient to do the "by hand" method (can`t bake cookies either)so have just used the machine. I put the finished project in a nylon lingerie bag and throw it in with hot water (have used woolite detergent or shampoo) and a pair or two of old jeans - haven`t tried the tennis shoes cause mine are never clean. I keep the water level lowish as I think one gets more agitation (contact with the jeans) with less water. I also leave the tails of yarn on the inside, uncut (after I`ve woven them in a bit) because I like to see the little "dreads" afterwards and then I cut them off. Instructions always tell you to trim them off before felting! Then keep peeking in the bag to see if it`s felted yet and if it`s the size you want. The felting occurs very suddenly! Make sure you do use a lingerie bag or a zippered pillowcase as somewhere, I read an article complete with pics where the fluff got caught in her washers pump and she needed a visit from the repair man. The bag that I posted was my first project and it was made of brown sheep lambs pride as recommended in the pattern I found on the internet. It ended up ~1/3 the size I started with in length but didn`t shrink as much in width, which is the norm. Did another bag on the wkd and it was a lot of fun. I experimented with different colours, yarns - all about Lopi weight, different stitches, a bit of fair isle, croched circular bottom etc. to see what I liked. Learned lots. I used smaller needles than I often see recommended as I think it gives me a heavier fabric in the end. I think is was 22 inches when I started felting and is now 16 inches. It would have felted more but this was the size I wanted. With the Brown sheep bag, there is absolutely no stitch definition. With last weekends "experimental" bag there is very slight definition. I don`t like much stitch definition - just a personal preference. I love the new bag, but haven`t decided how I want the strap to look and didn`t make one because I wasn`t sure how much these yarns would shrink in length. I may put a leather trim around the top, or a flap - don`t know yet. Have fun! Les

the chartreuse shepherd has her bio up!
|
Oh, what hilarious birds!! I love their mimicry! My daughter used to babysit for a family who had an african grey, named Leroy. He did "the telephone" really well and my daughter didn`t know that! (Snicker, snicker) I have a 25 year old cockatiel (verrrrrry old for one of those) named Percy. he`s a great guy and can whistle "Colonel Bogies March" (Think Bridge Over the River Quai) - and when I come in he says "Hiya Bee Bee Bee" He`s not the talker that the AG`s are. Since I had him before I met my DH, they are, well, a little less than friends!! Percy does like feet (fetish?) and will crawl up on DH`s and talk to them - it`s the most either of them will give!! Mosby`s probably healthier not laying eggs. My cousins bird layed eggs all the time and she depleted herself of calcium and couldn`t fly and was near death... They had to put Scotch mints on the floor of the cage to trick her into thinking she had layed an egg so she wouldn`t!! (Vets idea!!)

Beach Poncho Pattern

The beach poncho is great Mac Chick. I like how it hangs - you did well after all that frogging to complete it! I`d have tossed it aside.....giid job "finishing" it. Hope Mac Chicklet absolutely loves it!! So, I`ve been wondering - where`s the beach/oasis? Isn`t it "one big beach" where you live in the desert? Les

Heather - $$ for Salt Spring?
|
that`s great that your loom sold! And, funny it was just 30 min away!! Did you get any bids at all before the final bid? I have snooped around e-bay.ca and have bid once but didn`t win out. So, does this mean you can stash the cash for SP in Sept? Les

Heather - $$ for Salt Spring?
|
Heather- My heart just sunk for you and all I can say is "oh, crap"!! I was up early this am and the kids are off school and I had made some really, really good raspberry freezer jam last week . Thought I`d be the kind of mom I`m not and make them some biscuits - 21/2 dozen of them. Well.......I for got them in the oven and they turned into little pucks... That`s how the day started......does it help any? Les

Question-Debbie Bliss Number 2-Fair Isle Cardigan
|
Ohhh, Marion - I`ve been eyeing that cardigan too but will likely go for the "simple Cardigan with collar" in that book (don`t have it yet) for some Follies I have.
Chartreuse Shepherd - how do you like the philosophers wool? Is it nice? I drool over all the beautiful selections they have on their website. Les

I was reading the "Green Eyed Girl`s" blog (very good one I might add) http://grnydgrl.typepad.com/ and she has this sign hanging on the wall
May those that love us, love us and those that don`t love us may God turn their hearts and if he can`t turn their hearts may he turn their ankles so we will know them by their limp
It`s supposedly an Irish-ism. What do you say Eileen?
My day is starting off better than yesterday with the burnt biscuits! got a call from a friend since 1967. She is in town with DD#3 who is in a BIG volleyball tourney. We`re going to meet downtown and maybe go to the Museum to see the "Bog People" exhibit and definitely go for lunch. Annie is lots of fun and keeps me laughing - She says, "I don`t ask for much, but I wish someone would keep my glasses clean (she`s a dentist) and floss my teeth." I haven`t seen her for about a year so we`ll have lots to catch up on! Les

Roll Call-What`s on your needles NOW?
|
Well, I have the same danged projects I had on the needles last time there was roll call!! I have nearly completed the triangular shawl in the cement coloured cotton which I will dye after I finish. I keep adding to its size, not knowing how big it really is because it will shrink and may even stretch. I figure I can always make it smaller after I dye it but adding to it may be a problem as i`d have to dye more yarn.....and I only have so much dye, and you know how it goes!! Yesterday was a holiday in Canada, so it is a short week coming up and a busy one for me but I`m getting excited to do the dying. Les

What I`ve been up to, plus my knitting woes...
|
I`ve been wondering if you`d vaporized, Sandra!! Kids and computers: can`t they just leave them alone?? I have a friend whose kids have changed her password on her cell phone and so she can`t get her messages and of course she could always change the password back but she needs to know what they used (and they can`t remember) so she can enter it at the prompts to create the change!! My son doesn`t do any "intellegent" fiddling with the computer but whenever he plays a game, the computer starts to lock up and give those blue "fatal exception" messages when the next person uses the computer. I was having problems with it yesterday and couldn`t post here because of it. DH gave DS "the rant" last night!! After a good nights rest, it seems to be working today. LOL Re: your sweater and it`s neckline.....Did you ever read the article on Knitty.com on the topic? I think it was in the winter/04 e-zine and was called Munificence. It is hilarious. Glad you were able to design a fix. Les

It`s 84 degrees....
|
Oh, you guys, i can`t imagine your woes! On Sunday we had rain, sleet, hail, sun, more hail and then a skiff of snow...... and it was chilly! LOL We hosted a 6th annual May long wkd baseball game/potluck with 2 other families and managed to all get up to bat (13 of us) between the hail. I guess that would be during the sunny spot!! We keep old bed sheets handy and my family knows the drill. Grab one and run out on the deck and cover up the tender annuals. I keep twigs in the planters to suspend the sheets over the plants without crushing them. Only one plant is looking a little nipped. I so sympathize with you tho, I just wilt in the heat and don`t know how one copes with heat plus humidity. Les

I am so tempted! Now don`t you start "pushin". I received mine in the lovely denim and silver. It swatched completely differently than I would have thought! It slid along the needles beautifully - supple as you say! No advice re the yo`s. Les

What I`ve been up to, plus my knitting woes...
|
Oh, Sandra, your son and the computer is making me laugh....Sounds like you`re on a slippery slope!!
Too bad about the fair isle hat. Well, now you have a "good swatch", but I guess you just can`t add a few extra stitches without doing some "good math" to keep the pattern in sync. Good luck. (could you turn it into a purse so you don`t have to rip out all of that "good Knitting"?) Les

A tasty idea for people like me!
|
It`s the weekend. You`ve been knitting, finishing that book or gardening all day, haven`t showered or brushed your teeth or hair yet and suddenly realize you were invited out and offered to bring an hors d`oeuvre! You have to leave in an hour and a half.
Make these, and while they`re soaking, hop into the shower, brush teeth and get gorgeous. No sweat!!
VODKA SOAKED CHERRY OR GRAPE TOMATOES
1 pint cherry or grape tomatoes 1/2 cup vodka A few dashes of hot sauce Lemon pepper or other seasoned salt/pepper mix
Poke 5 -6 holes with a wooden pick or skewer into each tomato. Place in a bowl and pour vodka over tomatoes, cover, toss occasionally, 1 to 2 hours. Drain. Sprinkle with seasoned pepper. Put in a gorgeous bowl. Make a Ceasar from the drained vodka. Voila!
Corinna - if you served these at the market it could be a great draw!! Les
