Aran Arghan and pillow pattern check it out! Just found this pattern with picture. It is knit in 5 panels so it doesn`t get too weighty to knit.

A new pet peeve Haven`t decided which colour/colours I want to snag. Do I want a mixture or just one colour? I rather like the Khaki but just started a Uros in mocha cream so maybe that`s too similar. Am thinking maybe along the line of Aubergi.... oops, I mean Charcoal......;-}

Farmin - you`re amazing Farmin - you told Annie (question about gauge) that you have been knitting only a year. What incredible projects you`ve acomplished! Beautiful cables in your raspberry, sweaters that your kids will actually put on........and all this with trees nagging to be pruned (that was you wasn`t it?) I`m envious of your talent!

Gauge on Geisha? This article absolutely cracked me up (especially the pictures)and perhaps shows how important getting the right gauge is ;-} Looks like you are in good company!

Farmin - you`re amazing Boy, we really are getting off the topic of knitting, but this is fun!! I have been thinking about trying to make a substitute for a sugar syrup flavoring like they use at Starbucks et al for "steamers", "lattes", Italian sodas etc. I think they are from italy. I received a battery operated milk foamer (works great by the way)for Christmas with some half bottles of "vanilla" and "hazelnut" syrups for the beverages. These small bottles retail for about 6.95 CDN and I figure there`s got to be a way of making them yourself. I have made liquers before ie raspberry/vodka with just the fruit, sugar and vodka (not a sugar syrup)throw it ina a huge jar and swish it every once in a while. I was thinking one could probably use a syrup and put a vanilla bean in it and let it sit a while to make one of the coffee syrup flavours. whadayathink?

Farmin - you`re amazing "Where do you get a vanilla bean?"
I often see them used on cooking shows or in recipe books so I would have to go into the city and head for the gourmet cooking/cooking school store or perhaps a good bulk food specialty store (not the bulk section of the grocery store) may have some. I also may try an organic food store.
Les - let me know if you try it and I will too!

vanilla, or what to do while waiting for the yarn box Good ideas, Skully! I`ve never used vanilla sugar except to sweeten cream to whip. How would you use it for baking? Would you use 1c vanilla sugar for 1c sugar called for in the recipe or would it be strong enough flavoured to just add a bit like a tsp.? Like your idea about the vanilla bean in the rum. Surly (is that spelled right?) I would have to "taste" it regularly for "doneness" along the way perhaps in my coffee!

Need Cat Advice I hope that the cats are spayed! We have had a problem in the past with feral cats in our area. Stories abound about driving down the hamlet road at night and seeing all these reflective eyes staring at you.

Twice a year this nasty, feral,long-haired female has a litter of kittens under our shed. Although cute as can be, they are all born with goopy eyes (can`t remember what that disease is called - I am not a cat lover as I have allergies) and there is a young man who captures them and gives them away to people who want barn cats. The mom cat is not easy to catch. The young man is now in Africa so I don`t know what`ll happen this spring!! Perhaps the hamlet road will be lit up once again! Or we can hope that the hawks and owls take care of the problem.

Canning, spices, flavored syrups, and other stuff... Your post reminds me of what I used to do years ago. I would put about 3 drops of a baking extract in with the coffee grounds before brewing. My favorite was believe it or not, coconut extract. The flavour of the extract changed with the brewing of the coffee and it was just a subtle, unidentifiable, flavour. I do want to try to make the syrup flavouring though, for my lattes. This also reminds me of something else I heard years ago. When you make a large urn of coffee, like for 40 people , you put a prune or two in the basket with the coffee and it apparently will take the bitter taste out of the coffee - needed of that coffee is made in advance and has to sit a while! makes me wonder though if the prunes shouldn`t be in the coffee reservoir rather than in the basket.

Ram wools I just received my Ram Wools spring/summer catalogue. They are a shop in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada where I used to go when we visited my in-laws in Wpg. There are some really inspiring designs in this issue - fashionable yet practical (one can always knit a top a little longer to HIDE the tummy!)They have a web-site www.ramwools.com with an online catalogue or you can request a snail mail catalogue to read in the bathtub.

Ram wools Whatdaya mean. Even tho it`s a Canadian site and I`m in Canada, I have to click the button to convert prices to CDN dollars!! ;-}
I ordered the Garnstudio "Drops" pattern book for the "cable trim jacket" knit in cotton, which is similar to the casual cables on this site but looks a little more fitted, or is it the model. It is a yummy chocolate brown in the pic. and I bought the Schachenmayr "Inspiration" pattern book for the "Scaletta Top" which is in an acrylic/rayon. Had a call from them yesterday afternoon telling me that the books haven`t arrived yet - will be another 5-10 days. Nice that they called. No, it`s not a site for bargains but it sure has nice things!!
Lesley - who is twitching because she just discovered that the coffee pot is on the fritz - as her mom used to say (where did that come from - probably not politically correct is it)

Consider my situation!! Need suggestions for sliding those Elann "boxes" past my husband. He is the "postmaster"!! We own a general store in the country. Besides being the post office,it is also, the bank, the video store, the grocery store, the liquor store. I have only just discovered this site and my passion for buying yarn! The bills come on our mastercard bill which of course he sees first as he sorts the mail, but I could always prepay for orders couldn`t I. Hmm, he sees the bank acct. info and those cancelled cheques first too.
maybe I`ll have to stash a little cash and buy a money order and mail it to Elann. Never had to do something so nefarious!! But what about those boxes that he sees first! Just got one this am (he gave it to me and didn`t say anything) and I know another is coming later this week. Help!!

Consider my situation!! Thanks for the help ladies! I will have to try:
1. Prepay Elann with money order, keeping a positive banance or prepay Paypal also with money order as we just have two bank accounts and they are joint accounts and he is very fastidious about reconciling and asks me if anything looks out of order! (he`s an Engineer)
2. No one out here knits - well, I think there must be some but none that are good friends who would understand my situation!! Which brings me to a pet peeve which you may be able to relate to......... ya get a cool pattern and have an idea of what yarn you`d use and the colour and how you might change it ie. making it longer or shorter or with a v-neck. So you`re so excited about it that you show the pic to a non-knitting friend and they say something like "I don`t like the colour or it`s too long." They just can`t see beyond the picture..............
And, if I DID have a knitting friend, he would probably notice the nudge, nudge, wink, wink, when they picked it up from me if I was around. to keep our marriage intact, I work only 1/2 time (too much togetherness you know......)and have another job which get`s me out travelling to see pregnant women.
So, will have to get on this........
