Bri, the violet heather looks so pretty!

Gorgeous color, Bri! I`m off to ravelry to see it up close. You are a very generous knitter--your friend is very lucky indeed!

Question about crocheting in the round from a novice
|
That book has some nice designs, Sandra. I can`t wait to see what you make! Check out crochet me`s forum for some discussion on this very book: http://crochetme.com/forum/jewel-top-doris-chan-everyday-crochet Hope this helps. BTW, the "top down" group at ravelry has touched on top down crochet as well.
Hope that helps!

First sweater advice
|
A friend of mine just finished her first poncho from the top down and is ready to knit a sweater. I`m wondering what you think is a good first project--whether we should knit top down or in pieces so that she can learn to seam. She`s busty too--so I`m at a total loss for what is flattering yet simple (I don`t want her to have to mess with short rows since she will be doing a good chunk of knitting in the hospital.) Any pattern or general shape suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks, Bri! I`m all for the quick knit. The poncho took FOREVER. I thought she was going to throw in the towel after it was all over but she bound of yesterday, tried it on, and loved it! Her first question was "can I make a sweater now?"
I love the wrap sweaters but I`m thinking that may take too long. I really like the KPS #241 neckdown with ties and I thought that neckline would be good--we could do it in a larger gauge maybe and it would go faster. I`ll have to see if she likes it. Thanks again!

Good point about the aran weight. I was thinking worsted but now I`m thinking highland chunky or bulky instead. Thanks!

That`s a great suggestion. I even printed that out awhile ago. I`ll have to run that one by her too.

Thanks, Bets! You confirmed my suspicion about the open neckline. Although, I`ve seen those anthropology inspired capelets on some busty women and it looked good. The neckline on those is high too. Maybe the cropped length balances? She won`t go for that though.

That`s a nice sweater too. I`ll have to check the gauge on that one. Thanks!

Thanks for the advice!

Such helpful, well thought out advice from everyone! I was thinking about how long the top down poncho took and I agree, I think pieces is better. She has done a bit of sewing so I think she`ll be fine with the assembly and seaming and with Bet`s informative tutorial, we can do some shaping too! I like the vest idea and I think I have a Paton`s booklet with some simple designs in chunky yarn. I love top down but it does seem like it takes a long time--and the sleeves can be a hassle if you aren`t used to dpn. Thanks so much again, everyone! You guys are the best!!!

I found out that I`m a lousy knitter
|
Bets and Benne said it all. Don`t give up and don`t beat yourself up. I am a total klutz with the dpns--it takes me several tries to get the first rows right--I`ve yet to get anything cast on right the first time. Usually, I have at least one twist if not two. I try to avoid dpns whenever I can--i prefer two circulars or magic loop and even then, I feel like working in circles hurts my hands.
I really like the fingerless mitts from Weekend Knitting. They are knit flat and then three needle binded off together (did I just make a verb?) The mitts are shaped using short rows. I`ve used woolease and elann`s luxury merino and they came out great.
Don`t sell your wool. Don`t even think about it. Off to friend you at that R place.

That Purlescence is really nice! I could have spent hours there but had the kiddies in tow so I could only make one round before they were begging to leave.

Kellygirl - Princess
|
Wow, thanks for the compliment! I detailed my revisions on Ravelry. Basically, I cast on for the largest size and knit it to the length of the third size (41" I think.) Used US#9`s. I used three needle bind off for the shoulders and then picked up and knit around the body to make the skirt. The Princess is a gorgeous yarn--really drapey and slightly shimmery. It is a bit slippery--but I`d use it again for this project in a heartbeat. LMK if you have any other questions.
