My True color...
|
Hey, Michelle, As they say -- out of the mouths of babes... My daughter inherited some of the early white hair that I had and their grandfather had, but they keep it covered up. I gave up long ago, in fact, I never much tried to cover up my early onset white hair. It was tough being asked if I got a senior discount when I was 40 years old. Happy colors, dark brown sounds just right! Jamie

PatWw and others: Maryland Wool Festival
|
Hi Pat and Benne, Theresa and Eileen, You are the Md. Wool Festival ladies, aren`t you. Here I am visiting in Baltimore area and thinking about returning sometime around the MD. Wool Festival. What are the dates this year? I think I can combine a visit to DD,DSIL and DGS along with a trip to Harford COunty ?? for the wool festival. I sure has been cold here this week. Thanks for your information. Jamie (who also hopes to be back on Salt Spring Island for a knitting encounter)

About the gloves that were on my needles...
|
Hi Carrie, I`m sure that you will enjoy finishing the quilt. As Benne said, the gloves will be a wonderful gift for someone (or for you) if you finish them someday, but they did sound like some really small knitting, which can be nerve racking. Happy knitting and quilting! Jamie

PatWw and others: Maryland Wool Festival

Yes, Benne, I was expecting the weather to be warmer than Colorado, but it`s a whole lot colder this week. Denver area in 50s and 60s and today it`s in the 20s in Baltimore and snowing. Thought I`d be babysitting but the snow kept my DD home so we`re enjoying a "snow day". The early May time for the MD WOOL FESTIVAL may work for me--my calendar is filling up and I do work part-time so I`ll have to see if I can get away in early May (it`s not a great time for DD but I`d mainly just be sleeping here some and visiting elsewhere in the area). I do want to go back to Salt SPring Island also and I think you would love it there. I may try to drive to B.C. from Colorado this year. Thanks for replying so quickly. Happy knitting, Jamie

PatWw and others: Maryland Wool Festival

Hi Cate, Pat and Eileen, I bet this topic will come up again when are plans are more firm. I`m glad to know the date and will try to get back to MD in May. In June there is the Estes Park Wool Festival which I try to attend (only an hour`s drive from home) each year and always buy more roving or fleece than I can possibly spin in a year, but it`s a great atmosphere. I`d love to see your products, Cate. My DD lived in Richmond several years while attending VCU (MFA degree) and working. She`s been in Baltimore about 5-6 yrs now. Happy knitting, Jamie

Cate and Jamie - Mittens
|
Hi Les, DOn`t know if I can help but this is how I knit mittens. I use 2 needles and do a basic thumb gusset which can be made in several sizes. Basically it is this: (I use 3.5 st/in (Lopi yarn, or Gjestal Naturgarn or 3 ply White Buffalo, but I also use the same plan for children`s mitts in worsted wgt.) Cast on 23 to 27 sts (more for wider hands), after 2.5" or so or K1 P1 rib, I increase 4 sts. Then I knit straight until I want to start thumb gusset (usually 4 rows because I knit kinda short mittens). Thumb gusset is: knit half (minus 1 st), then increase one (I knit in back of next st, then stitch, the center one) then inc. 1 st in next st. WRong side row is purl across. I continue to increase 1 st at each side of the growing gusset until I have 11 or 13 st (but you could make the thumb wider for a really wide thumb). On the following purl row, I knit across half (less l st) of the sts, plus the thumb gusset sts (11st or more), and knit the thumb to what ever length I want, the decrease k2tog across row, pull a length of yarn to secure sts and later to sew seam. To complete mitten I start off again where the thumb gusset started, that is, half way across the row. Pick up 1 st from base of thumb for the center st. (at times I pick up 2 sts, one at each side of thumb, to give more width (can`t do this when I have a two color pattern in the body of the mitten), and then continue to purl across the row. From there I knit straight until I have the length I want and start the decrease rows, usually about about 9 more rows, then I complete the mitten by pulling the yarn thru remaining sts and sewing the two seams, thumb and main mitten. If the base of the thumb mitten is a bit open I reinforce it when it is sewn. Actually I reinforce the area with extra threads on the back side because this is an area of lots of wear and tear.
Sorry about the informality of my pattern (really I just knit them from instinct). I know what you mean about the cold thumb problem and I find this method has ample flexibility to make a warm and comfortable mitten. The bulk of the mittens I make are sold to people I don`t know, but I have made mittens for personal orders and I am always surprised about the different sizes of hands! This mitten pattern is very basic, no right or left hand, thumbs are on side. As hard as I have tried to change to a four needle mitten, I just return to my old basic method.
Les, I bet that if you just added a couple of extra sts to the thumb gusset you are making (prob. a couple of extra rows) you would come up with a well fitted and warm mitten. There`s nothing so bad as a tight mitten, or one that is too short. Mittens are made for warmth, not elegant close fits. SOrry for the wordy explanation. Happy knitting, Jamie who wears mittens a lot and has sold a lot of mittens over the past 20 years

Jamie - I did it . Bri - what yarn do you use?
|
Hi Les, They sound warm and comfy. Will you make another pair for you? I had a good day -- started an eyelash yarn scarf for a friend and finished it at her house late this afternoon. She was pleased. It was a Paton`s yarn and knit in garter st. What could be simpler? Jamie

Happiness is have your projects worn!
|
Just received a thank you note for late gifts to DD and DGchildren in Hawaii. DGS (4yrs) received mittens for his stuffed dogs and he "loves his new mittens for his dogs -- so cute". DGD (7yrs) got a poncho of Paton Twist eyelash yarn; DD writes: "...loves her poncho and wears it often." I was hesitant to make a poncho for Hawaii, but was really pleased with the note. Happiness is having grand children! Jamie
