Roving Hi Carrie, You don`t say what size of roving the patterns call for, but I got interested in your post and looked up a few places to search. They are google.com (unspun wool roving, icelandic unspun wool roving)--both brought a number of sites to explore. Also www.schoolhousepress.com; Meg Swanson sells Icelandic roving but only in dark natural colors.
There`s a big difference between pencil roving and regular roving which is used by many spinners. The pencil roving is what you find in the White Buffalo yarn, 6 strands placed together for a polar weight yarn. marrhaven.com also has rovings in different fibers and colors. There must be lots of small businesses that sell roving. Good luck in finding just what you want. Jamie

Roving Hi Carrie, I just looked up the knitfreak.com and now I know what you may be looking for. Roving for thrummed mittens can be any bit of fleece, or any bit of roving. Pencil roving would not really be effective for thrums. I made one pair of thrummed mittens. They were fun to make but I preferred other methods of making super warm mittens. I prefer two color mittens with yarn carried across the row--like Norwegian patterns but I use Lopi weight yarn and simple patterns. Mittens are a great project for using up bits of leftover yarn. Happy knitting, Jamie BTW, thanks for the intro to another interesting website.

Roll Call-The guy in the red suit in 90 days-what`s on your needles? Hi Bets, I am filling time on an empty stomach before a medical test today, so here`s some more chatter. I have two DDs, long gone from the home nest, but they never expressed much interest in knitted projects. I had some success in the 70s with some warm wool ponchos - twice as the years passed. ALso made them each lovely mohair sweaters and perhaps one or two other sweaters. They did use the poncho and wore the sweaters. They also more mom-made mittens and perhaps a hat if it got really cold. I guess I must admit that they did like my finished projects, but I can`t remember them ever asking me to make things for them; perhaps they did and I just don`t remember. I have knit so much for so many years, after a while all the projects become a blur. My exDH even took a weaving class and was then able to help me warp the loom (now I have to do it alone!). Now that I am retired I am having trouble finishing big projects. Your idea for eliciting suggestions for small items was a good one. Thanks. Have a good week. Jamie

Roving Carrie, Hope you get a chance to see this. I`ve been "out of it" for a couple of day. Yes, I carry the yarn across and knit every three or four sts. I try to do this every few rows, in a random pattern. It makes a double thick fabric on those rows and adds to the warmth of the mitten. Norwegian patterns carry a second color every row, which makes their projects super warm. I live in a cold part of the country and like to stay warm! Jamie

How do you store your newsletters? Hi! I organized them by date and have them in a file folder. Hadn`t thought about moths! I have lavender here and them around the house, and hope to avoid those little wool eating monsters! Just got mine for this month and said "I don`t need anything here!" We`ll see how much my resolve lasts! Jamie

Okay, who`s buying Naturgarn and what will you make? Hi Benne, Here you are enabling us again? You must know that my house if overflowing with Naturgram and White Buffalo. I love all the colors of the Naturgram but somehow I`m not finding time to knit much these days! It is a wonderful yarn and I`d made some ponchos with it, plus mittens, hats and sweaters. The felted slippers sound like a great idea! Even a colorful felted bag of some sort! Ah, dream away.... Jamie

Jamie, about mittens... Hi Carrie, I use regular Reynolds Lopi on #10 needles, #8 for ribbing. To tell the truth, I use Naturgarn or White Buffalo (3 strands) for most mittens these days, but I have use Lopi more in the past. Happy knitting. Jamie

Jamie, about mittens... Hi Carrie, Elann sold some that was 3 strands, but latest (and last) WB is 6 strands. If you look under search and WB you will find what I wrote about dividing the 6 strands in two balls of 3 each. Jamie
