White Buffalo finally arrived!
|
Benne, What size needle do you use with WB and mohair, and how many strands of WB? I got my new stash in two days! but haven`t had time to open the boxes. I`ve been making hats and mitten sets with WB this past week. I`m going to Canada for the last week of the month and who knows what I`ll find there. I taking a few needles but no yarn! Happy knitting to you all! Jamie

a question about washing some soiled taj mahal yarn
|
Benne, I`m full of ideas today (I should be organizing for a trip starting MOnday early!). Just remember that what you don`t wash to do is a lot of agitation with the fibers because they will felt easier. But, yep, I`d try some stronger cleaning agent that the Eucalan -- dishwasher soap can be effective. Jamie

Blocking Mohair?
|
Hi Laurie, I just washed the mohair scarf I knit (from the Plymouth Outback) and didn`t really block, just stretched it gently to the width and length that was reasonable. It is a 2k, 2p rib so it won`t be blocked by any other method (eg steam, etc. which I do with most projects in wool). I just realized that this is about the first mohair I have ever knitted. I sold most of mine a few years ago and have avoided it because of sensitive skin, but it doesn`t bother my hands at all! Jamie

Long Awaited Fair Isle
|
Hi Libby, Congrats on completing your fair isle. Just a word of caution (advice): use Wool Lite sparingly. It is really a bit harsh, in spite of its labeling. Eucalan or Brown Sheep wool wash are usually recommended for good woolens. Also the use of vinegar in both the wash and rinse are recommended. Vinegar helps set the colors (salt water is also good for this), and it is a great rinse for all sorts of things. Brown Sheep wool wash recommends some vinegar in the wash water; it helps the washing agent to penetrate the wool more. Happy knitting. Jamie

I`ve returned from `heaven` aka Salt Spring Island
|
Hi fellow knitters, Just returned late last nite from Vancouver Island, B.C., for one week including a grand day on Salt Spring Island with Alice Trueman! What a treat! The island is beautiful with lots of artists studios all around, and gorgeous scenes of water and woods. The island is hilly, which surprised me, but shouldn`t have. The views from high places are just marvelous (perhaps to die for). Alice was a gracious hostess for my 6 hour visit. I saw much of the yarn collected for the Dorcas project and a bag of finished sweaters ready to be sent north in November. If she lived closer I would certainly help to make knitting kits for the various knitters, and to pack the finished knit wear in November. We also visited the retreat center where the "elannites" will meet in a couple of weeks. What a pleasant spot--like an old cozy home with several modern touches (especially in the kitchen)! The view is splendid! Alice is so easy to talk with and has many tales to relate. We enjoyed sharing our common interest--love of fiber. I bought a bit of wool at the studio near the retreat home. Six hours is not a long enough visit but it did give me a taste of Pacific Northwest `heaven`. I hope to return next June for Alice`s knitting retreat, or to the next Elann get-together. Unfortunately life must continue in Colorado and my schedule is really crowded for the next few weeks. After that I may be busy with tutoring. Thanks, Alice, for a super visit! Jamie

Les and Benne: a note for you
|
Les, Thanks for your post. I would love to have stayed a few more weeks in BC. The weather was extra nice, cool, sunny and perfect for late summer. My plans for a visit to Victoria were made in May and could not be changed. My schedule doesn`t allow me to return for your planned get-together. Have fun on Salt Spring Island! Benne, yes, I found some yarn on my trip but before I got to Canada. My first stop was in Boise, ID -- I shopped in Meridian, ID at the Haneke Wool shop for some of their lovely merino (they also have great blends with alpaca, but I can`t knit with alpaca), plus a LYS there which I know. Also traveled to Pendleton Woolen Mills in Oregon (a really long drive and back in one day!) to buy wool fabric, and some wool yarn. The Pendleton Yarn sold at the mill is quite scatchy but I hope to be able to use it for cushions (knit or woven) or some large shawls. The yard goods are for shawls and skirts. And I did buy a bit of wool on Salt Spring Island. I drove between Delta, B.C. and Tsawwassen where Ann C.B. lives on my way to the ferry to Victoria. Now home, I miss the waterways of the Puget Sound and the Southern Golf Islands. It`s a beautiful part of this earth! Jamie

Will it pill, fuzz, or fall apart?

Hey Benne! Whacha gonna do with this butiful yarn after ya beat it up? And what colors? It is beautiful. Guess I missed the camel and the silk extravaganza but now I`m just shopped out for a while! Happy knitting, Jamie

WOw, Benne, you love fiber as much as I do. Sounds like fun to me, all that washing, drying, rubbing, etc. Thanks for replying. Jamie

Shrinking Down to Size
|
Hi! What a dilemma. It`s really hard to fix a sweater that is just too big all over--especially when it`s knit from the bottom. There are ways of cutting body and sleeves and putting on new ribbing, but it`s not an easy job. FElting tends to make the fabric of the sweater rather wind proof. Please watch the size change carefully as it felts so it won`t turn out too small. There`s no changing a felted piece. This reminded me of a sweater project I did from DH when recently married. The first sweater was too big, so I undid it, washed the yarn and knit a second time. Second time was also too big. Took that one apart but never tried a third time. DH just never got a handknit sweater! Happy knitting, Jamie
