Stockinette Stitch Roll
Hi Marsha, What part of the scarf calls for a a stockinette stitch roll? If it`s the end, then I might know what it means? I have finished to bottom of one vest with stockinette st. which after binding off (knit down), rolls up to a rolled edge. But I`ve never followed a pattern that use this term. Hope someone can help. Jamie

White Buffalo question
Hi Laura, Dividing the 6 strand cake into 2 strands is a lot more difficult that dividing into 2 3-strands yarn. To get it to 2 strands required 2 processes, and the second division is sometimes a bit tricky (`cos you have added some twist to the 4 strand ball), but it is possible. 2 strand yarn will break more easier than 3 strand. However, 2 strand plus a mohair would make a great weight yarn for many projects. I have used this yarn for years and I have worked with two strand for children`s mittens and other items, but it`s really a lot of work. Too bad you don`t have a chance to work with WBuffalo before you buy a lot! It`s light weight and warm and very reasonably priced! Happy knitting! Jamie

Thanks, Benne. I am quite sad to know that WB will no longer be available. I have really enjoying using it all these years and think it`s a great product. Jamie

Mourning the White Buffalo
Good morning Benne, I`ll write this after having ordered by new order of WB and before I go off to visit a shop which sells quilting fabric! I counted my WB inventory (more or less) yesterday, and after my order today, I can open my own small shop. The good thing is that I do use it and have sold many of the WB items. People who buy my mittens have warm hands even in the coldest winter. Unfortunately we have not had many really cold winters for years. Yes, I`ve used WB since 1995, and also some unspun Lopi from Iceland which I had before finding the WB. You just don`t know how many mittens, hats and sweaters I have made over the years! and I`d hate to have to count! Happy knitting, Jamie

Mourning the White Buffalo
Hello again, I`m back from the quilting shop, with a few pieces for linings of knit purses, back of needlepoint pin cushions, and a wild nitegown for my DGD. Les, slippers are a great project for WB. Indeed I will miss this product! It is quite sad to see a great product discontinued. I have got to forgot my credit card number for a few weeks; this addition is getting serious! Happy knitting, Jamie

Jamie, do you have any favorite WB patterns?
Hi Benne, It`s been a busy communicating day, no! I`m not much of a pattern person when it comes to making mittens and hats. I make 2 needle mittens on #8 ribbing and #10 body w/3-ply WB. Sometimes they are plain color, but usually I put in some sort of pattern(I just make them up), and when I have a lot of leftovers, I make mittens using up the left overs, and knit both mittens at the same time (along side each other). The patterns are 2 color ones and produce a really warm mitten because of the doubling of the yarn. I have one style with a mosaic (slip st) pattern which is also pretty warm. Even the one color mittens are warm. Two needle mittens have to be sewed but that`s what I do. As for hats, I have made several in E. Zimmerman`s Brioche pattern from KNITTING WITHOUT TEARS (a great book!). I usually combine 3 strands WB with 2 or 3 light wt,fingering wt,perhaps worsted wt,for a more interesting hat. Right now I`m making a roll up edge hat (just k stockinette), knit in the round. I put in some colors in purl sts so it won`t continue to roll up, and then have continued in stockinette. I just figure out how many sts by size of head (about 19-23") --this one has 62 sts and is a bit snug for me--x #sts/inch (usually 3.5). As for clogs, well I haven`t made any but I think you can consider 3 strands of WB very similar to the regular Lopi yarn. Usually I don`t felt it but it felts well (I suggest plain knitting for felting. I did a sample with a cable at the felting had a ridge between the knit and purl section.) I am planning to knit the poncho which is part of today`s ad. It is knit in 6 ply and I think I`ll use it alot. After injuring my shoulder, I find ponchos are a good substitute for coats and my winter coats sit in the closet. I use Reynolds or other Lopi patterns for sweaters. Usually I use at least two colors but once I knit a sweater with purl patterns where the colors would be on an Icelandic sweater and it was effective. I have never knit a 6-strand sweater, just 3 strand. Well, Benne, here`s my textbk on using WB. My secrets are out of the bag! Happy knitting, Jamie

Wool Allergies
Hi Connie, I have lots of allergies, but wool isn`t too bad for me. Personally I do not like the superwash wool because whatever treatment it receives, keeps the natural scales from attaching to other scales on the fiber. It will not felt and I find that it stretches on washing. As for alpaca, I really can`t knit with it because of itching and irritated eyes. Fortunately, even if wool doesn`t work for you there are other great fibers--cotton and silk, plus rayon (a natural fiber), and some of the synthetics. Other natural fibers are becoming available in good yarn. I haven`t tried the hemp/wool that I bought, but have tried bamboo which is silky smooth. The new soy silk yarn is another one. I have no problems with silk, cotton, bamboo and I`m sure soy (haven`t used it yet). Your condition with asthma sounds more serious than mine and I wish you luck in finding a fiber that works for you. Try some superwash wool and see how you feel. Happy knitting, Jamie
