FLOWER PETAL SHAWL
|
You`re right on, Michelle. Your yarn is in front as you purl along, so you first purl into the front of the stitch to be increased, then move the yarn to the back, knit into the back of the same stitch, then return your yarn to the front, ready to continue purling.

Glad to hear the shawl is going well, Mary - if it looks pretty, then that`s great! The increase rows are always on the rows of the charts that have no eyelet patterning (the charts alternate between patterned and a plain "K" rows, so the increases are simply made on the plain rows).

Speaking of Berrocco-
|
In their defense, Bets, I find it hard to believe myself, but every time we do a children`s or a men`s pattern as a featured design, it goes over like a lead balloon. What does that say about us female knitters? That we mostly like to knit for ourselves? I don`t know! Before I began elann, I used think about knitting for men, women, and children just about equally, but I`m not sure that`s true for many knitters - at least that`s what I`m guessing by customer response.
That said, I think the type of yarn and the target market of a yarn both have a large bearing on the success of the patterns they are presented with. I`ve heard that children`s and baby`s patterns sell very well with acrylic yarns that readily available at local department stores. For higher end novelty yarns, like those from Berroco, it makes some sense that the women who buy them might want to make garments for themselves – price is one factor, but women`s fashions also tend to lend themselves well to novelty yarns. Where I tend to see more patterns for men are with the classic, non-novelty yarns like the 100% wools and 100% cottons. I think the European yarn companies are especially good at always offering at least a few designs of men in these qualities.

I don`t see any evidence of this happening, Bets, and I think it`s a shame. If you look at "vintage" pattern books from the 30`s, 40`s, and even the 50`s, there seemed to be an equal number of patterns for men women and children. In the last 20 years, it seems like even the major knitting magazines relegate men`s and children`s patterns to special issues - I don`t see why there couldn`t be at least one or two patterns for men and one or two patterns for children in each issue.
