My Solution to MacChick`s Diamond Lace Puzzle I looked at pages 140-141 of Mary Thomas`s Knitting Patterns, then at the chart and knitted example on page 143, then at the row by row instructions for the flat pattern on pages 143-144. In the end, I solved it by marking off the 8 st repeat on the chart and transcribing it to my own row by row instructions of the repeat only, exclusive of end stitches (the flat pattern is 8+3). I then cast 96 stitches onto a short circular needle, and test knit 12 rows – my results are in the scan on the left frame. Below are my instructions – you`ll note that I grouped together rounds 1 and 3, and wrote them out, so that you could see the pattern of similarities and differences within their repeats. Similarly, rounds 7 and 9 are grouped together, and rounds 5 and 9 form a twosome as well (they are the double decrease rounds).

the debbie bliss aran tweed--soft? I`d describe it as a `rugged` tweed, Zoe - a quality many lovers of tweed really enjoy. If you`re looking for a softer tweed, I`d recommend the Dale Sisik.

Upcoming Mousse in spumoni I`d describe it as a pale grey, shot through with definite dusty pinks and dusty teals.

CatBookMom -- sierra aran for scarf? Hi Sandra,
You`re right that the worsted weight Sierra had many more plies, of a finer spin, resulting in a tighter twist, which made it less lofty than the new Aran weight, with its fewer plies. I`d describe it as lofty, yet still rugged enough for very good stitch definition.

Ann - How does the Sierra Aran compare to HW/Chunky? To me, Sierra is slightly more rugged than Highland Wool Chunky, because the hairs of its alpaca content makes its surface slightly less smooth. There is a difference in their spin too - Highland Chunky is a softly spun 2 ply, while Sierra is a 3-ply (as is the regular worsted weight Highland Wool).

Ann or Diane: Chamonix colours? Hi Bea,
Sorry to be late in answering your question - I`ve had technical difficulties this morning! The Vandee is a very dark, very muted purple, and I`ve explained the difference between the 2 blue/greys on the Chamonix page.

To search for any item, click "Search" on the black menu bar, and then use the first search engine, "Search for Item" - if you type in "knitting pattern", you`d get a link to this book. We`re out of stock at the moment, but we have 24 copies on order.

The lesser itch-factor?? Hi Joan,
To me, Sierra is slightly more rugged than Highland Wool, because the hairs of its alpaca content makes its surface less smooth.

MacChick and Ann - Many Thanks! Shucks, thanks, CatBookMom from me too! Like Calamintha, I too have been experimenting with garter stitch lace. I like it not just because it has no wrong and right side, and because it doesn`t curl at the edges, but because its stitches are square, which means that you can play with all the geometric shapes that Barbara Walker describes in her Fourth Treasury.
