Wow Emily!
|
Bets:
My elann account shows that I bought 15 balls. Probably used 14. I never did get gauge (I`m a loose knitter), so I used the pattern sizing for the second to smallest size which turned out to be the right size for me. Yes, I did the math beforehand--not just happy accident. I love that yarn. It`s very bouncy.
The socks were really quite fun; $20 for the yarn and the pattern. And they`re for me, me , me. Ha! What is deceptive is that both things have been at the almost-finished stage for ages, but I`m trying to force myself to get stuff done. I`m good for the first 90% of a project, the last 10% I have to force myself to do. So, it looks like I`ve been more industrious than I really have!

Advice for my first cable project
|
My first sweater (age 12 or 13) had cables in it. No problem. It`s not like you`ll endanger anyone`s life if you goof up a cable and have to rip stuff out.

PETER THE PROGRAMMER!!!!
We have been waiting for you. Where have you been?
Please give us a board like PhpBB in which you can send private messages and which "bumps up" messages with new responses to the top. The current board structure seems a bit behind the times, really, and messages get lost in the fray.
And YES for the wiki!!! Mousepotato will also know what this is, and the rest of the group will be quick to catch on.
For those who don`t know, a wiki is a way of posting online information....say instructions for a sweater, or reviews of yarns. Anyone can contribute stuff. If you`ve looked at wikipedia (www.wikipedia.org), this is how that website grows. It`s different from a message board and more like writing an online manual or tips. We would love that!!!

Really, elannites, you`ll LOVE a wiki, even if it`s new to you.
Look here for examples of books (http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Main_Page)
But you don`t have to think of this as a book, think of it as a "we`re writing our own manual" kind of thing.
So, you could have separate "manual" projects going at once. Everyone can contribute, and you don`t need to be a programmer (hey, that`s why Peter has a job!) to contribute. If you can post to a message board, then you can be an author on a wiki.
Here`s some ideas for different "manuals" which could grow and change over time:
Elann yarn reviews Free pattern digest (our own patterns) How do I do this? (knitting instructions) Best knitting tips Etc.
Hey, Peter, as long as we have your attention, let me put in two cents about something else. We LOVE pictures, but the current picture structure needs some help. You can only post pics that are 138 px wide, and sometimes knitting is about the details. It would be nice if these thumbnails were linked to a larger picture so that you can see more of the detail.

New knitters?
|
The thread about the knitting shop got me thinking....
I`ve read more than one comment about the "fad" of knitting and how the knitting market will eventually crash. On the one part, I understand how knitting endless novelty scarves would get boring and maybe people will drop the habit.
But on the other hand, as most of us have discovered, this craft is addicting. The yarn fondling, the meditative aspect, the ogling of beautiful colors, the pure joy of making stuff--all these things and more keep us interested.
So, I guess I`m wondering if knitting can really be predicted to have a cycle of boom and bust like this. Wouldn`t it make more sense to think that some (but not all) of the new knitters will be hooked for life? And that this will just help energize the knitting community?
Is anyone out there a new-ish knitter (say less than five years)? What do you think?
What do the other "lifers" think?

Oh, yes, crown yourself queen! Knit yourself a crown (there`s a pattern out there for such a thing, I think.)

kacha kacha
|
Okay, I had a little coupon for one of the bigger box stores, and i went intending to spend it. I got one of those little Clover counter thingies. Katcha katcha it says on there. Guess that`s the noise that it makes.
HOW DID I LIVE WITHOUT THIS is what I want to know now. The endless tallying with pen and pencil, the post-it note method all pale in comparison. Twenty plus years of knitting and NOW I discover this little thingy.

Help with posting pics to gallery

That`s not the image program I use either, but you`re on the right track.
The other thing to pay attention to is having the width and the length tied to one another, so that you end up with a pic which maintains the same proportions.

Lark or owl?

Are you a lark (early riser/poster) or an owl (up late/posting late)?
It seems like ya`ll are larks, and I`m a lifelong owl. Can`t help it. Just the way the internal clock is set.

Argh. One (or two) balls short
|
So, I`m making the Sierra Aran free pattern sweater, in a slightly larger size. I ordered 8 balls thinking that this would be okay. Nope. I`m short maybe a 2 yard portion to bind off. Yes, stupid, stupid, but there you go. I`ve mined all the yarn I can off of the piece and I`m absolutely stuck without another two yard piece.
Sooooo. What would you do? Order one ball of yarn? Are there book "must have`s" here at elann to go with? Or anything else that is a "must have"?
Argh once again.

Sierra Aran - Italian Plum - question for Elann
|
Laura:
I never intended to make the yarn in the exact size. I`m, as they say, ahem, big boned. Yes, it`s the bones. I did the "knit to fit" thing, which was great and fun and easy, and I just ran a bit short by a few yards. So, if you`re a perfect size 38, you might not run into trouble. The pattern was great, though you have to do a bit of thinking on your own at the beginning to get the hang of it.
