My E bay steal!!!

That is great!! I always wondered what would happen in that case...nice to know that the seller has that option, instead of re-listing and going thru the suspense all over again.

Is it a man`s world?

Patricia, Good for you, for standing up to that clerk and for pursuing your dream! There is no reason why we ladies can`t do things that are traditionally men things, especially with good advice at the hardware store. I know my leaky faucets, lamp rewiring, and broken dimmer switch would not get fixed if I waited for DH. Today it is tile grout repair. I do need DH for stuff requiring muscle, though, like replacing a garbage disposal!

I`m Back & 3 cool things happened
|
Hey MacChick, I thought there was something kind of non-beginnerish in CoolSue`s hat--the turned up hem, that`s not usually in Knitting 101 :-)! How lucky she is to have you as a teacher and sister-in-law! Chicklet is very cute with her drawstring knitting bag. My son had the same intent, concentrating look when I took a picture of him knitting about three years ago. It`s wonderful especially in this day when many kids are so hyper to have them experience this quiet restful activity.

MacChicklet, What a pretty shawl!

And I see you used different colors too! Lucky Barbie, to have you knit for her!

Library weeding of knitting books, part 2.....
|
I decided to find out what criteria my library uses to get rid of book and if I could get on a list of patrons that would get notified first (per MacChick`s suggestion). Found out who was the librarian in charge of the needlecrafts collection (call #746) and left a polite voice mail since she wasn`t in. Didn`t get a call back for 2 days and just happened to be in the library, so I tracked her down. She said she had referred the matter to an administrator who should have called me back. Meanwhile, I searched the catalog to explore more of what had been purged (residual records of purged books remain, though now listed as unavailable). I guess a large part of it is personal taste but I was disappointed at a couple other high-fashion mid-eighties pattern collections that were gone, and at the ones that were kept. It seemed that anything with a preponderance of large graphic intarsia (big picture sweaters) was kept and for instance, "Elle Knitting Book: 50 designs from France" was gone. That hurt. I remember checking that book out a couple years ago and thinking that a couple tweaks to some of the mostly texture sweater patterns and you`d have something beautiful and contemporary. The administrator did call me back that day and said that there was no "call first" list, that would be preferential treatment. As far as criteria for weeding goes, she said it is based on what the librarian in charge thinks is "dated". She also said that the librarian knew her area well and was working on getting the needlework section more current, and did I notice that they now carried "Knit n` Style" magazine and had hardbound current copies of Vogue magazine. I in turn asked her if she knew what prices certain oop books go for on the Internet, do they research that of potential books to be weeded. (I didn`t sound that accusatory, I said it off-handedly) She said they didn`t do that, their primary aim is to keep the collection current and appealing to their patrons. The only cheering thing I got out of the whole conversation was that they were done weeding the 746 area so "All Sweaters in All Gauges" is safe, although now I know what happened to the original edition of "Knitting Without Tears" that disappeared two years ago! Anyhow, thanks for letting me get it off my chest, feel better now!

Library weeding of knitting books, part 2.....
|
Heather, Now that the heat of the moment is over, I feel a little silly getting so excited over it, not important in comparison to most things! It did occur to me later that a library that really wanted a good knitting collection could just look at Amazon; many people have listed their Top Ten list, they would have a sure bet just getting books that are listed multiple times. Alice`s Moebius
|
Shui Kuen, It is so neat looking, to be knitting a true Moebius! I felt like when I did the Heartstrings end to end mobius (knit like a scarf, and then twist and graft at the end), that it was a bit of a trick. Is it the Peruvian Collection Alpaca that you are using? And will it be scarf length or to go around the head too? I`m going to have to print Alice`s ingenious instructions and get to know Annabelle & Beatrice better! Sandra

Isn`t that true about the raglan style, needs some actual shoulders to fill it out to look decent!

Library weeding of knitting books, part 2.....
|
I think in retrospect that I was asking the wrong person. The library administrator said all their purged books go to the Friends of the Library organization (kind of like a ladies guild) who actually run the used book store and take donations. When I went yesterday (to rescue a purged crochet afghan book!) I overheard a worker taking a person`s name that bought a set of bible story volumes, only one was missing. She promised to call if it ever was donated, and it sounded like they did keep a list, matching people with books. So maybe I`ll pursue this angle.
Sometimes I do prefer the older editions over the reprints. For instance Barbara Walker`s Knitting from the Top. I have the recent reprint that doesn`t have all the interesting photos of sample items that BW knit. Maybe a non-knitter would look at the styles and colors and go ugh. But I was just amazed at the variety: set-in sleeves from the top down and ski pants from the top-down, for example.
I am currently doing a purge of my own, of kids books, since my youngest is going into middle school. I know you probably have a ton of kids books already, but let me know if you`re interested in any that I might have, they`re yours for free. Same goes for you too Heather. I don`t recall how old your son is, just that he likes Yu-gi-oh!

Ok ladies, what`s on the needles this week?
|
After I got some back-up Araucania nature cotton last month I started the Melon blast cardigan from spring Knitters. Have used 3 hanks and am almost finished with the left armhole shaping, so am estimating 1 more hank will finish the body. Then I plan on altenating hanks from my later order (which is a different dyelot) with my one remaining hank from my original order, for the sleeves. Hopefully, the dyelot difference will not be too noticeable. I am not liking the way the bottom is rolling up too much, so may use Ann`s tip of picking up stitches around the bottom, knitting one row and binding off or may go more drastic and cut off the bottom, pick up loops and knit a border I like.

Death Valley Duo

What nice ponchos! I don`t really know my dolls very well, I thought they were Kens! I love the color work in the one, and the stylish collar in the other. Think I read someplace (Knitting in America?) that Barbara Walker quit knitting full size and now only knits for Barbie and Ken. Anyways, both are beautiful and looking forward to what you two cook up next!

Shelley, the hat is beautiful! Using your diagram and the photo I can figure out the pattern. So is %=pink, $=turquoise, #=green and *=purple? Thank you for sharing!

Jean, that looks GORGEOUS!

Jean, The moebius looks perfect! It lays so nicely both as a head wrap and scarf. What dimensions (width & length) did you use? I did the same pattern in Zara but had to make it shorter (about 35") due to lack of yarn.

When to block.
|
Carrie, I have limited experience, but I`ve never blocked a sweater until I`m all done. I just wash the completed sweater (fill washer, dump sweater in, swish by hand, then use the spin cycle to get the water out). After using a towel to get more water out, I simply lay it on a mesh sweater drying rack and shape it while damp.
If my pieces to be seamed don`t match exactly, I hand baste with big running stitches (it`s a quick process) in visible scrap yarn, and ease to fit, before beginning the painstaking mattress stitch. Sandra

Shui Kuen, I`m sure you`ll get an official response from Ann, but from my experience, your orders are OK. It just means that your two orders will be sent together and you will save money on shipping and handling. I`ve done this many times when I`ve wanted to add something to my original order that was made on the same day. It wouldn`t work if you made a third order on the same day, the third order won`t get merged--I`ve tried it! Sandra
