Scullyknits, two great projects and the Divine Miss M !
|
Thanks for the kind words. I was thinking I needed a different picture of the bag as it really looks even better in person. I used the basic pattern of the `booga j` bag. found it free on a site that escapes me now. cast on the long side of the bottom, garter back and forth, then pick up the edges and knit circular up the sides. I only had one skein of the Noro so I used a rowan DK from the sales bin, knit double for the bottom. Also used it for the I-cord handle.
The picture was taken on the same white square in my kitchen, gives one some idea of the shrinkage.
The bag took three trips in the washer till it felted as much as I wanted. Didn`t use blue jeans, maybe was a problem. What seemed to work best was the shock of a cold water rince after the hot suds.

Thanks everyone for all the good tips. Not wearing is mostly a way to get back at Mom, so I think the less said the better on this one. But I`ll try the clothes for a toy trick if she ever HAS to wear something specific.

Comment on Debbie Bliss pattern...
|
I`ve never tried to follow one. I really like the solid, shawl collar cardigan in the same book as your fair isle, but I was too cheap to for over the $ for only 1 pattern. I noticed the garmet sizes in a baby book look awfully large. But maybe that is on purpose so they will fit longer.

Return of the mohair... Question!!
|
I frogged the AbFab and am now working on a afghan from an EZ book. It`s a square - knit in the round :) I`ve made a couple sweaters from mohair, large floppy top-layer types. I enjoy the garments, very light and very warm.
Some mohair is very hard to frog, other not so bad. I`ve noticed that the Outback I`m working with has sections where the thin black binder thread is broken. This causes the `fluff` to ball-up. Hard to accurately describe. The remaining strand, while thin, seem very strong and overall, this weirdness isn`t visable in the knitted sections. Because of this binder/fluff ball effect, the Outback is proving impossible to frog (for me).
I think I`ll order a bit more in other colors.

Sad news. I think she should have followed the instructions. It`s hard to know in advance what people will do.

Elann agony - the good and the bad
|
Got 3 boxes of yarn yesterday and they didn`t cost me a dime. One was ordered on Bets` behalf (I guess I`ll have to give it up), one was a swap from the swap page, and the third was 3 skeins of Timo. Paid for by trading a shawl for a gift certificate. What agony you ask? The Timo is the most georgeous stuff, just the right shine, red, orange and purple. I now want enough for a shell, but I`m stuck with a scarf as the red is gone! There is a bit of the certificate left, guess I`ll stock up on Lara to ease the pain.

LOL We do have the same taste. I have green tea in my shopping cart waiting for me to decide on a quantity and whether or not to pick up a little more mohair. I`m liking the afghan I`m working on. Did you order any Casablanca? How about the mulberry sky?

VK pattern-these armholes look huge! - how to fix
|
Now we want to make the same pattern. Are you using the green tea? Yes, I think you can simply shorten the armhole opening. I`ll look at again later and comment more. What do you think about the open one, number 8 I think it is? I would set in the sleeves... can someone over 20 (Ok over 30, well today, now over 40) wear an open sweater with a T underneath? The one I like the best is the shell cardigan (11?) but the model is hiding the front, so I`m worried it might hang funny. Green Tea doubled may give guage...

knitting dog hair

It was mentioned in another post that someone had enough hair on the floor to knit. I have it saved in bags. I would very much like to knit it, but don`t know how to wash and spin it. Any suggestions?

Mohair-good golly!!!

I`m knitting with it right now. After not knitting mohair for several years, it feels funny. All `thick` and slippery. Can`t go as fast as I`m used to. Really like the way it looks.

Thanks for the tip, I`ll check it out. My was a HUGE white dog (Akbash, not an AKC breed, bred to guard goats and sheep on the open range, used to watch MILs goats, spent her last years keeping us safe from squirrels.) along the lines of a taller Great Pyrenees. Very long guard hairs with a long thick downy undercoat. Would loose all undercoat in the summer. Mountains of hair swept off the hardwood floors everyday during shedding season.

Rent the film, Smilla`s Sense of Snow. It is filled with sweaters worth knitting. I`ve seen it twice, the second time so I could really concentrate on the knits. I`ll have to check out Big Fish....
