Calculating how far a ball of yarn will go, and/or substituting yarn
|
Your idea is very clever and the math is correct, but I think your sample size is too small. You are extrapolating the results of 1 foot to a project using more than 2,800 feet; or using 11 stitches to estimate a project with more than 30,500 stitches. You need a bigger sample size. Stitches per 10ft of yarn would be more accurate. You could also use a scale and swatch (or start the sweater) say 25-50gm, measure the area, and compare that to the area of the sweater.

ps, can you tell I`m an engineer?
Your brain set my name as Kim, and it will be very hard to change. I set my neighbor`s name as Paul, even though it is really Terry. I have to think twice everytime I see him.

OK I am officially embarrassed and an addict
|
I`ve been receiving (hiding) yarn at work for years!! The space under my desk was full of white boxes. A Senior exec was going to use my office while visiting and I cleared it all out. But, since then I`ve gotten a new white box to start the collection all over.

Okay, it`s a little scary at my house right now
|
I pulled all mine out (except for the office stash) once when DH was on a business trip. Totally underestimating how long it would take to put away - it was quite the mess. Good luck

This is the yarn that was used for the shrug that was on display at our LYS. I tried it on and it looked surprisingly good.

OT -- Going to MILAN (whoooo!)
|
Congratulations! Milan is really nice. I was surprised to find it quite industrial - it is a major manufacturing center. Other things I learned while traveling in Italy include coffee on a major piazza can run you upwards of $25 a cup (Venice - San Marco Plaza) and small local grocery stores have great take takeout for eating on a budget.
