Bunny bought me a ball winder
|
I know what you mean about `looking for something to wind up`. I`ve taken to grabbing up any really messy coming-apart balls that show up among the donations at my seniors` group, just for the pleasure of `fixing` them! lol! Still, I have to say I miss the mind-soothing feeling I get when winding up balls by hand.

New Poll - how do you store your WIP?
|
I always have quite a few WIPs going at once. Right this minute, I have a charity shawl, crochet legwarmers for a friend, a stole for me, a charity crochet lapghan, and swatches for my first socks, all with some work done on them this week. I use baskets (thrift shops often have very nice ones!) for WIPs with more bulk or lots of skeins; other projects go into the clear, zipped cases that linens sometimes come in (Patternworks also sells these cases); smaller projects can go in movable-zipper plastic food-storage bags, either the gallon or the 2.5 gallon size; and the smallest WIPs can fit into even the bags that Elann puts around their invoices. WIPs which haven`t been worked on in a while and so have become UFOs, get a tote or a plastic bag and then most of them go into a wicker chest.
I have a lot of tote bags (DH calls me "the Imelda Marcos of tote bags"! lol!), and I have one major gadget bag by my chair plus two smaller ones which live in my present favorite totes. So when I`m going out, I can grab a tote and stuff in a WIP, all in its bag, that`s appropriate to the time I`m likely to have to knit or crochet.

Newsletter!

The newsletter I got today, in color, listed all the yarns that were introduced in March. No new ones. Am I missing something?

What IS it with the Baby Cashmere?
|
OK, back when this became available, I bought 10 skeins each of the deep pink and the gorgeous deep blue. And then there are the two shades of sea-green still haunting me, saying "You NEED me!!"
Before I go nuts here, can I realistically make much of anything with just 10 skeins of the BC? Or should I order more - even though in a different dyelot - before they vanish? (I *did* get plenty of the Peruvian Wool and Chunky, enough for 3 or 4 sweaters.)
I`m REALLY trying to abstain from yarn buying, here, but it`s silly to have `not quite enough` of some yarn, and then what I do have will just sit there.

Doreen - Beautiful Flower Basket Shawl!
|
That is a lovely shawl. Everyone here has been talking about it, and I am glad to see how beautiful it is. And it is nice to know that it doesn`t take a great deal of yarn. You should be very proud of your knitting skills.

Storing Yarn
|
Most of mine is in big plastic tubs, or Elann boxes (lol!). These are easy to stack and move as necessary, you can generally see what`s in them, and they can be tucked into the available spaces. I also have several of the 3-drawer containers, for specialty yarns. Mine isn`t very organized yet, but I`m not sure that if I let it all out to be better-sorted, it won`t escape and multiply! ECasey has shared her yarn database with me, and I`m hoping to use that to really get my yarn so that it`s easy to find particular ones.

Maybe I need to go on a book diet!

There`s a good commentary on it at http://grumperinacrafts.blogspot.com/ . The blogger is an online friend who`s a neuroscientist, so the `review` is well thought-out. There`s also a very nice review of the new KnitPicks yarns, in the Feb. 7 posting.

Brown Sheep Lamb`s Pride
|
Hey, `not bad` at all!! That $5.25/skein is a really decent discount from the usual $6.95/skein. Great yarns for felting, I`ve been told. The bulky is 125yds/skein, and the worsted is 190yds/skein.

Knitting as meditation - Sunday reflection
|
Your post is so eloquent. Indeed, the words touch my soul as well. Thank you so much for having shared your thoughts with us.
I took up crocheting and then knitting about 2 years ago, as a way to pass the time I was spending with my mother. Mom has dementia as the result of a stroke and needs care 24/7, so she is in a nursing home near me. We have never been either emotionally or geographically close, and it was quite an adjustment for both of us. Like many who suddenly become their parent`s caregivers, I had a lot of issues and misconceptions to deal with.
One day I got the idea to take up crocheting (which she taught me) so as to have something to do besides fidget when visiting Mom. That led me to a seniors` charity knit/crochet group, to this forum and the About.com knit and crochet forums, and to being a frequent drop-in at my LYS. I`ve made gifts for family and friends and for charity, and I`ve gained real pride in making pretty and useful things to share with others. I have not only found a wonderful way to reduce stress, but I`ve also found more friends than I`ve had most of my life.
I appreciate the warm welcome you have all given me as a newcomer to your forum. Thanks seem inadequate, but I offer them to you all, along with very big cyber-hugs!

Don`t Do This
|
Wow! Many of us would never even think of that hazard! So sorry that it happened to your DD. You are *not* a bad mommy! One look at the pix of you and your DD says you take very good care of her and the rest of your family. Staph infections are tough to cure.
I have become a semi-compulsive hand-washer here in the LA area, and the more public (like the airport!) the bathrooms, the more careful I am to use a paper towel to open the main door after washing. I was shocked two years ago when we went to central Illinois; *many* restaurants, public bathrooms at tourist attractions, etc. do NOT have seat covers!
Heavens, think about all these hazards we try to avoid; although we escape a lot of infections, the ones that survive seem to get harder and harder to kill off. I hope your daughter is better soon.

Flower Basket Shawls
|
Thanks for the tip (sorry, accidental pun!) about how to sharpen wooden needle points. I`ve asked over on the About.com Knitting Forum about how to make dull-pointed bamboo needles sharper, but no one suggested just using sandpaper. I had thought about using our pencil sharpener (which is an artist`s model and can take even fairly large-diameter objects), but I was advised that it probably would just destroy the needles.
The Clover needles I have are the worst. So, this really works on them?

What to Make with Gift Yarn?
|
Recently I was given 2 skeins of Cherry Tree Hill`s Windsong yarn (http://www.cherryyarn.com/windsong.html). It`s a ladder yarn much like Plymouth Eros, and the two skeins come to about 330 yards. There are some patterns online for making things like shawls and ponchos out of just this yarn, but my personal taste is not for anything that glitzy, and the garment would just sit in a drawer.
I`d appreciate any suggestions you may have for a main yarn to carry this Windsong with, to show off the beautiful colors but toning down the glitz at the same time. The colorway is Green Mountain Madness, which has many shades of greens and blues.

What to Make with Gift Yarn?
|
What would either of you think about a shawl or some such made from the Austermann Quattro in either the Sand, the Bronze or the Walnut, either trimmed with or carried along with the Windsong? I popped all three colors onto a Word document along with the pic of the Windsong Green Mtn color, and I think there are some possible combinations there.
