Clinging Desperately to the Yarn Diet
|
Some of my fingernails are beginning to fail me as I try to hold on. I`m repeating the mantra - "There will be more fabulous yarns in 6 months, in a year. There will be more; there will be more. Om,,, Om"

Charity knitting and ethics stuff---what`s YHO?
|
Is it just me or does your conscience sometimes reach out and bite you?
Yesterday I was at my seniors` charity knit/crochet group, and one of the newer members brought in a beautiful pair of knitted adult slippers in a pattern we hadn`t seen before, one which made great use of bits of leftover yarns. Joan was going to have copies made of the pattern, and I went over to take a look, and I saw that she had pages from a magazine. There were just the two of us, but `Copyright Nanny`, aka me, just had to pipe up and say, "Um, that`s a copyrighted pattern and you really shouldn`t make copies. Etc." Well, Joan was nice about it, but I felt really bad, because it was clear that I had killed the excitement she was feeling about the reception for her slippers.
Our group only sells our items at Christmas, at well under most crafters` prices (e.g.,$15 for a lapghan, $25 for a larger one) and everything we earn goes back into yarns or quilt supplies. So there is absolutely no profit motive. We don`t mark our items with any sort of label as to who made it or even with our group`s name. I do share Internet patterns with the group, but I check the copyright statements.
So, my friends, should I have said anything? I feel a bit like Scrooge.

Charity knitting and ethics stuff---what`s YHO?
|
This has been nagging at me, so I just sent off a request to the magazine for permission to use this 1979 (!) pattern. It may go straight to the byte bucket, but I felt better the minute I sent the email.

Sandra D is On the Road
|
Just heard from Sandra D. She and her family are visiting California this week, and arrived in So Calif on Friday. So far they have survived delayed luggage and their first bouts with July 4 weekend traffic. Today they are visiting friends and relatives in Malibu and then heading to Burbank - Hey, that`s where we live! - for an overnight stay and possible visit to Universal Studios tomorrow.
Sandra and I are hoping we`ll be able to sit and knit a bit this evening. I`ll post tomorrow about the event.

Sandra D is On the Road

We had a great time, even though we only had a couple of hours; of course, the time flew by! We didn`t actually knit, but we talked a bit about the Cafe Cardigan, and I gave her a copy of my chart from the revised/errata pattern.
Sandra has a couple of small projects on the needles from the Baby Silk, and they are SO pretty and soft. We have some other things in common, too, and I`m hoping we`ll be emailing directly.
Too soon it was time for her to head off to bed, so as to be ready for today`s busy schedule. They`re on their way to Yosemite, and cleverly are going into the park as many holiday weekenders are leaving it.

The new knitty is up
|
Yay, another fan! Did you make the Dr Who scarf in one of the `official` color schemes? I was surprised to find the patterns on the `net. I made a couple of very long scarves for friends back in Denver in the early 80s when Tom Baker eps were being run, but none quite as long as Baker`s. Do you collect the DVDs? I was surprised to find how pricey they are.

Pretty much a yawn for me. Some of the articles about men knitting are interesting. One of the frequent posters on the About.com Knitting Forum is a guy in Omaha. He`s quite talented and very much an enabler!!

How to stay on your yarn diet!
|
My LYS carries Berroco, and I was looking at the Optik and the other (brain freeze) last week when the LYSO had a 25% off everything sale for `best customers`. I resisted, but it was hard.
I keep torturing myself by looking at some of the recent YOTDs; why does that Bounce keep talking to me? Or the Mayfair, or the ..... There will be more yarn; there will be more yarn. Ohm...

20 feet!!?! Wow! One of the ones I made was for a 6`4" friend, and I thought that the 10 feet or so I did, to make it come down to his knees on both sides was a lot. I`ll go look at the Megan Dennis pattern again.

Angel pink Esprit!
|
LOL! I`m size 8AAA, when I can find them. With socks - now my very own designs! - I can wear size M. This is the Orchid Pink Esprit currently sold out, and I`m doing them on size 2s with a 48st cast-on. Love those little Bryspun dpns! By happy accident, the leg length and ribbing are the same, so when the ribbing is turned down, these are nice anklets!
My caption got a bit garbled, but I meant to say that both Uleta and Lunadog were very helpful in translating from a 60st sock to the 48st size and in how to make that heel turn.

Branching out Baby Silk-

Thanks for posting the picture. I put this pattern on my WIMs list the minute I saw the pattern on Knitty.com. Your picture gives a much better view of the lace than the picture with the pattern.

Angel pink Esprit!
|
Yes, I am enjoying making them. After the lovely lacy design Ann made up in the Silk City Bounce, I may try doing a simple lace or eyelet design in another color of the Esprit. And I`ll look for online patterns for Fixation, since the yarns are so similar.
I was having trouble doing the heel turn. I knew that the short rows were supposed to be making a half-circle centered on the back but mine were off-center. The directions I was following were for 60st socks. While I was waiting for my plane at Vancouver airport, I was inspired to use my new charting skills from Alice`s retreat to figure out what I should be doing - and it worked!

Have you checked out the Berroco.com website? I haven`t looked in a while, but they often have suggestions for patterns for particular yarns. Although this Optik may just be in their Scarf Central, which is umpteen ideas for combining fancy scarf yarns.
