Wow! The new site has totally different shipping!
|
Oh, crap, I'm in trouble now. I thought it was different and lower when I was cruising around looking at things, but now that y'all have confirmed it, it's going to be really hard not to order more. And it was a battle before, of course, one that I often lost.

Okay, I knew I had to be up there on the list so I can't say I am totally surprised to see that I am indeed, the fastest mouth in the South, or just about anywhere else on several continents! I can't wait to see how shocked and amazed Thom will be when I tell him I have the most posts on the chatsite. ha! I earned it, it's not easy to type that many smart-mouth posts in 7 years!

I'm not sure how to respond to a particular person here, and I can't find how to do that, but my main problem is I have to log in every single time I open the website. I'm using Firefox, latest update. I did not close the browser window but left it open and went to another site on a different tab and the elann site made me log in again. I am,of course, logged in using my email address. I couldn't find anywhere that left me to option to remain signed in. I hope there is one, oh please, or Peter can make one that gives us that option. eta: I haven't tried to buy anything yet so I don't know what will happen then. I had to log in again whether or not I closed the browser tab. edited by benne on 3/6/2010

Thanks. Yes, it would be nice to be logged on for at least a day at a time like ebay and some other sites allow. I'm still poking around in corners and will try to order something today as a test. It's a real burden, but I guess I can find something I want. edited by benne on 3/7/2010 edited by benne on 3/7/2010

Would be nice if it went to the forum or something. Saves extra clicking. Though with all the menus at the top, it's not so bad.
Yes, I would like that. You may have noticed I am struggling with the quotes this morning! HA!

Knitted Tams by Mary Rowe
|
For all of you who may have a copy of this book published by Interweave Press (1998-2001) now OOP, you might want to hang onto it or make sure if you decide to sell it, you get the going rate. It retailed for $15 and is now listed for $221+ on Amazon and an auction is up to $75 on ebay. If you see a copy at a yard sale, library sale or destash for a reasonable rate, you might want to grab it. It is an excellent book. Schoolhouse Press still has the book pictured on their website because they said they still have hopes it will be reprinted some day. Meg Swansen has worked hard to bring OOP knitting books back in print, I hope she succeeds with this one too.

Highland Wool Photo Contest- get those photos up!
|
Okay, kids, y'all have bought a lot of Highland Wool and I know darn good and well a bunch of you have been knitting it up into all kinds of wonderful projects. So, start going through your pictures, take pictures if you need to, and don't forget all those projects you posted on the old elann site. You can post all those pictures you posted to the old site to enter the contest. Look, this is yarny stuff you can win, so let's get crackin' and get those photos entered into the contest!
If I don't see a bunch of pictures going up, I'm going to start naming names! Please don't make me go through every single post on the old site and find each and every one of you because you know I will. Now that I think about it, I've got a thing or two to post pictures of too. Good luck everyone, but remember, if you don't post a picture, you can't win!
Just to remind you, here's what Angela posted about the contest:
we are running a contest from now through the end of April with chances to win one of 5 prizes of $100.00 elann dollar credits. To enter, submit a completed project using elann.com Peruvian Highland Wool to the Project Gallery and make sure to select 'submit to contest'. You are welcome to submit more than one project.

Verena magazine

Greetings all, I read but almost never post, but today I have a question. I subscribe to Verena magazine and just got an email requesting and extra $2.50 to cover increased mailing costs. I wondered if it was a scam of sorts because I've never heard of a subsciption cost going up after the subscription has started. Does anyone else receive Verena? If so did you get this email requesting more money?
That sounds like an email scam to me. I subscribe to Verena and I did not receive anything like that. I would not click on anything in the email but do as SandraD suggested and call the toll-free number at Verena in the magazine. Don't contact them using any info in the email. Verena may want you to forward the email to them for tracing.

Herbert Neibling Lace

In his book, it mentions that he used cotton yarn for his doilies. Has anyone successfully substituted wool or animal fiber lace yarn? And I was thinking of making one of his doilies as a blanket like Jared Flood did..... Would Neibling mind? or would the act be an insult to his art?
Libby, lots of Niebling knitters use animal fibers for their doilies and shawls. Elann's Baby Lace Merino, the sportweights and fingering weights would work well too. I don't know if I would use all alpaca because it won't hold the blocking for the intricate lace quite as well as merino and wool.

Verena magazine

That is truly bizarre. I cannot imagine who thought that would be a good idea. I know they have reorganized at Verena and are now under the editorial guidance of Margery Winter, which is a very good sign for the magazine. I wonder if someone sent out an internal email by mistake?

I think your alpaca lace yarn will do fine, Libby. I was using a much heavier weight alpaca and may have been asking it to do things it didn't want to do. I love elann's baby lace merino, what colors did you get? It's so nice to knit, it really behaves itself well.

Thanks, everyone! Lorill did a beautiful job knitting the patterns. I can just imagine how good the stole must feel in baby cash. I passed up the bag sale, but only because I have enough in stash to make the stole and mitts. But I wanted one of every color!!!

Shirley Paden book
|
I have seen the new Shirley Paden book, Knitwear Design Workshop, and it is wonderful, one of those books that gets used over and over again. I have always admired Shirley Paden's designs because I think they take knitwear a step beyond with construction and detail found in tailored and couture garments. I know there are talented designers here and think it would be a wonderful Mother's Day or birthday gift. Just thought I'd mention that in case anyone needs to put in requests to family and friends.

I have a Berroco pattern and need help
|
Hi Debbie,
I looked at the Berroco yarn and I'm not sure but it looks like a cabled cotton to me. Elann's Sonata is a DK weight cabled cotton that I've used and like very much. I also love the Lara but it is not cabled. It has lovely drape and softness. I think I would base my choice on the pattern. What pattern are you going to make?
