Suggestions/tips for working with very slippy Colinette Engima
|
Oh Eileen, I`m so relieved. I was afraid something was wrong and I was about to call her. Bummer about her computer though. I downloaded my pics from Maryland into my computer, now if I can figure out how to get them out to you, we`re in luck. I have some very good pics of you and Theresa and the one of you, T, PatW and me turned out great too. The only problem with that one is that I had the camera set on movies (duh, what was I thinking?) and I can`t figure out how to get it into a JPEG format. I`ll call DH and get some professional input and try to e these pics to you. You get to make up the captions, you`ve proven how clever you are with that. :-} Benne

I don`t think you were a late bloomer so much as I was an early starter. lol My youngest daughter was born when I was 19 (I would have had a fit if my daughters had married at 17 and become mothers at 19)and I adopted my oldest daughter when she was 7 after her mother (my husband`s ex-wife) died. She has two children, a daughter 11 and a son soon to be 8. I`m glad to hear you have that never quit spirit working for you. I have an autoimmune disorder similar to lupus and some days all I can do is put one foot in front of the other. I just don`t know any other way and I`ll bet you don`t either. :-} Benne

Sock it to me or Norwegian Spt Wool with Outback Mohair?
|
Beatrice,
My own personal preference would be to use wool or a wool blend with the mohair. The gauge would be dictated by your pattern and how bulky you wanted your sweater to be. If you use a thinner yarn with the mohair, then the mohair will be the dominant yarn and a heavier yarn will be more of a blend of wool and mohair. I still hope some of the yarn mavens will weigh in on this as I am not expert about this. Benne

Benne I got my mohair!

Cindy,
I ordered the mulberry sky to use with the WB deep burgundy for a "not your mother`s coat." I have knit up a swatch using 3 strands of WB and 1 strand of the mulberry sky on size 13`s. I am going to attempt to put a photo up for you to see. I think it looks great together and blends very subtly. I can hardly wait to get started on the coat but first I have to get DD`s Valeria de Roma Capri openwork jacket done. Her BD is May 12 and I`m behind because I was lolligagging around in Maryland. lol Benne

As anxious as you are to get started on the "real" project, swatches are a perfect way to get familiar with your yarn and pattern stitches. It`s also a great time to decide which needles work best for your yarn, metal, plastic or wood. I used to hate swatching but now I like it because it saves me so much time and mistakes. I like the chance during swatching to see how the yarn behaves (or not). lol Without swatching, projects tend not to fit right because gauge may be off, therefore the whole project is the wrong size (this is the voice of experience speaking here). So just try to think about swatching as a chance to get to play with your yarn without worrying about following pattern directions. :-} Benne

Shui Kuen, I sent a picture. I sure hope it`s in focus. If it isn`t, I`ll try again. I am not up on using my new digital camera. I took pictures professionally on a Nikon 35mm camera and a Hasselblad 2 1/4 format where I used a light meter and had to figure shutter speed and fstops. I think the new cameras are so easy to use they confuse me.lol
I think the combination of the WB or another good wool with this mohair is beautiful. I really like the bayou. It reminds me of flowing water and the lavender sky looks like a sunrise on the desert. It has shading that goes from pale pink to deeper lavender. I plan on using the bayou with dark moss WB and the lavender sunset with lilac WB.

Carrie,
At the top of this page is a Search button. Click on it and go to the search for patterns section. Scroll down through the choices and select Scarves. There are a couple of mobious scarves there. Benne

Patricia,
Good for you!!! You are the official Coat Queen at elann. What yarn did you use for your coat? Did you ever find your WB? When you get your coat together, I`d love to see it. Please let me know if you have any tips on making it, especially the collar. I haven`t done that many collars. I am really wanting to get going on the coats but I need to get some May/June BD gifts for my girls done first. I think their coats will be for Christmas. How did you find the pattern to work from? It looks like it goes fairly fast give the yarn and gauge. Of course I just finished working with the Peruvian Alpaca for my casual cables, so the yarn looks huge. lol
This mohair is absolutely gorgeous. It would be hard to go wrong on a color. I think the mulberry sky and the bayou are especially rich looking. I saw lots of mohair at the festival and the quality of this mohair is as good or better than what I saw there and at a much better price, plus I always love that generous yardage per skein. Anything that reduces weaving in ends suits me. I hate that part. ;-}

Isn`t your trip with your schoolchildren coming up soon? Be sure and let us hear of your adventures. I think it`s so cool that you had your kids make their own knitting needles and taught them to knit. Benne

I just don`t want any of you to miss out on this yarn if you have a mohair project in your future. I`m only thinking of you, it`s for your own good. ;-} You know I love rock and roll, my kids are already worrying about what songs I will want played at my funeral. They`re convinced I`ll embarrass them from the grave when the Stones blast out of the speakers at ear-splitting levels. lol Benne

Cindy,
The pic doesn`t show all the nice shadings, I think you`ll like it. I think the WB will be fine if you`re gentle and wind it back as you go. I thought the WB needed some texture interest too. My gauge worked out to 8 stitches/4 inches on size 13`s. I`m having so much fun swatching it`s going to be hard getting back to DD`s jacket. lol
Happy Birthday to your little girl. It`s hard to realize how fast they grow. They are such sweeties at seven.

Sorry to hear about your move. Portables are a mess.
That is so great that the kids really liked knitting. I love the purse story. You just know her mom is going to be thrilled. Good for you and that creative little girl.
You are going to have a wonderful time. Washington is like no other place in America. What a great trip to share with your kids. Have fun and take pictures. We want to see you and your kiddos on your grand adventure.
