Just got back yesterday from a long weekend at Gettysburg with DH. I went to the Mannings and was surprised to find that I was not impressed. It is a big place and easily overwhelming. So if you do not have a large comprehensive LYS near you this would be it. But I found there were not a lot of bargains and I hate to buy yarn not on sale unless it is a great yarn. They did have Leicester yarn that was wonderful and they had Tuir from Dale of Norway on sale. The bargain at Mannings is that they have their own yarn on cones in a light weight yarn. If you are into fair isle knitting this would be the thing for your. As the Mannings come to the Maryland Wool festival every year I did not feel pressed to buy anything there. They do have a large area for knitting books and that was nice to see. I bought the new book on Double Knitting by M`lou Baber. Normally I would wait for this book to be offered an Hamiltons Booksellar at a reduced price but I was on vacation and DH insisted I get it.
The last day of vacation I found The Yarn Basket in Chambersburg PA. They have a very small place that is packed with goodies. I found some Elsebeth Lavold yarn "Silky Wool" for a coat pattern I found in the Double Knitting book and they had some yummy yarn of Louisa Harding`s "Kashmir Aran" on sale. Then I found out that in PA there is no sales tax. I would recommend the Yarn Basket and I think the Mannings is a good source of yarn and books but not a lot of bargains.
Then of course I check in here and see the cotton coming up on sale tomorrow. What is a girl to do? LOL PatQOC

Ditto on Bets` request for a review of M`Lou Baber`s book. I knew her a few years ago in Boise in the Knitting Guild there. That`s also were I met and worked with Myrna Stahman. Myrna has been a big influence in my knitting. Thanks for your report, Pat. Jamie

Bets and Jamie,
Not sure when I will be able to start a project from the double knitting book. I have looked at the instructions and am not sure exactly how it works. I think I just have to puts stitches on needles and work through the directions. I will keep you posted. The patterns are beutiful and if I can master the technique, I would like to make more than one project from the book. Barbar suggests you start by making coasters or pot holders as a small project to get used to the technique. I think I will take the advice as start out small. PatQOC
