I`m new to Elann.com so "Hi" everyone. I`ve got a problem with the Peacock Plumes cardigan (see free patterns section of elann.com). I`ve restarted this piece 4 times now and I keep coming up odd at the very beginning. The first pattern row works fine, but because at the beginning of the row you add fewer stitches than you take away, the whole thing goes wonky (at the end you add stitches without taking away so it gets worse). I don`t know what to do to get it to work out properly. Can anyone suggest a solution, or am I just missing something?

Hi! I have no idea whatsoever about the cardigan in question but I`m sure someone will post in the next 24 hours with meaningful help. It is that kind of place.
In the meantime, Welcome!!!!! That`s really what I`m posting for!

Disclaimer, I`ve not knit this cardigan, but I did look at the pattern. It is a variation on the feather and fan where the decreases are clustered in the center of a series of increases. Here the pattern is split and staggered to give the plumes rather than waves.
The repeat lines show the 6YOs followed by a cluster of decreases that equal 6 in the first series and the order is reversed in the next. the `repeat` as shown gets split so 3 YOs and 6 decreases are balanced after the repeat line by 3 YOs
If you look at the pattern chart, ignoring the repeat lines, there are 3 YOs, 6 decreases, followed by 6 YOs, the first 3 YOs balance the decreases just made, the next 3 YOs start the cycle over.
It seems like one adds fewer than taken away, but it is an illusion caused by the placement of the repeat lines, since the last 3 YOs balance the decreases at the begining.
Hope this helps

Thanks so much. After I posted, I sat down and knit a swatch of the pattern and discovered the "shift," for lack of a better term. So now I`m off to get started and, hopefully, continue.
