..so why does it still look wrong? New swatch pic on the blog. http://vamantaknits.blogspot.com/
Showing my lacey ignorance, but why can I not knit rows 20-1 and come out with the same picture as if it were rows 1-20? Having a hard time wrapping my head around it. Maybe the chart needs to be turned upside down too? Whew!

The stitch itself is not symmetrical - the top is wider than the bottom. If you draw three triangles in a row, point down, tops touching, then draw two triangles atop that row and then one triangle atop that second row, you get a triangle with jagged edges resulting from the nine triangles. When you draw the same configuration but have the first row consist of one triangle, the second row having two triangles, and the top row having three triangles, the sides are smooth and you see a nice triangle as a result.

Knitting stitches are much the same as the triangles.

Hope this is reasonably clear.

Cheers, Karen

Sorry, a correction: the stitches are indeed more or less bilaterally symmetric.

Joan I just sat and knitted a swatch and I couldn`t for the life of me figure out what to tell you---At this point I would go with continuing it in one direction. A cop out on my part but it baffles me

Well, all I can say is I do remember this being discussed on Laceknitters and the upshot was that it doesn`t work. I don`t know what to say other than if you want to sit down and try to chart it out. Of course, you could return to the original plan of Kitchener right?

or assymetrical and not worry about the last rows.

Thanks gals for your help & input. (I also diagrammed the triangle pyramid & it was fascinating. Thank you for that, Karen.)
In a final attempt, I tried turning the chart as it`s mirror image & that didn`t work either. So while I decide bt grafting or going asymmetrical, I cast on some socks. LOL. Needed something mindless for a change.
Thanks again!
