Could you kindly check the photos on my blog today and give me your input on my symmetry vs. asymmetry issue in my pattern?
Thanks,
Joan

Wha? Lace goddess? Who me? Lace Slave is more like it. Knowing that I am lazy and always take the path of least resistance here`s what I would do with that pattern if it were me. Start with a provisional cast on, knit half the pattern. Go back, undo the PCO and knit the other half in the other direction.

For me I would probably make the middle third either plain stockinette, garter or maybe a simple eyelet stitch to break up the pattern. But that`s one of those suit yourself aesthetic type questions.

But I`m a Kitchener Wuss. I don`t even like doing it on the toes of a sock. I`d go a long way to avoid having to Kitchener a shawl. I go looking through Barbara Walker with the book turned upside down just see which patterns would look good with a PCO instead of Kitchener!

I like the idea of provisional cast on and knit to either end. I`ve been avoid the luscious `print of the wave` (may not have the title quite right) from Eunny becuase I like the symetrical ends, but didn`t like the Kitchener rib in the middle. Your idea to insert a plain pannel is just the trick :)

The `seamen`s scarves` I did at Christmas are done with a central section of ribbing around the back of the neck, then the pattern section is knitted from that. These are done in two pieces with a PCO so that both of the pattern ends match. I *love* PCOs!!

I already knit half of the shawl. I`m at the center back now wondering if I can just flip the chart and keep going to the other end.

Oh...you know I was afraid there was something I might have missed reading the entry. Like that you`ve already done half the shawl. Oops, sorry.

Are you asking if you can knit the rows in the reverse order? Upside down as it were? I have never tried that personally and I have seen people on the Laceknitters list say that it won`t work. But it is always possible that they are wrong or that it might work with some adjusting. You might try an experimental swatch. Sorry I wish I could be of more help.

Joan, try it on a swatch-knit one motif working in the normal direction, then flip the chart upsidedown and see how it works. If you flip after one whole motif, it will make sense as you look at the scarf.

Let us know about the results

Without actually trying it, I think it would work if you added a bit of transition before heading the other way. A couple rows of faggoting, or garter, or something. The transition would ease any biasing as the pattern went the other way.

Thanks everyone, I am doing a swatch as bets suggested of the chart reversal but I have a feeling it won`t work. I started looking thru my BW lace book this AM and, tho` I really wanted a single flowing pattern of lace from end to end, I suppose that I will need some transition section to allow me to then reverse the chart. I`m thinking vertical lace trellis for a few rows, as a small pattern contrasting with the large one? I can`t do much transition bc then the length of the shawl will be too large for my tiny sis. BUT, here`s another question--should I purl a row in between the pattern lace and the start/end of the transition?

Thanks Cala, scully, bets, CBM for your advice.
