OK, I need to know if I`m the only one here... I was in a teleconference (maybe 8 people on the phone around the US) for 4-1/2 hours today, they had ME scribe, so I couldn`t KNIT! It was TORTURE! Usually I get to listen and knit. Please tell me I`m not the only one. I feel like an addict, I enjoy having yarn running through my fingers while I listen.

Where are you when you are teleconferencing? I have to go to a centre where other people wouldn`t "get it" ;-}!! Bummer! Les

I knit all the time during teleconferences. Couldn`t stand it without it. I make sure and use a headset so my hands are free and shoulder relaxed. I find I actually listen better since I`m not reading email or working on some other project during the call. My favorite projects are socks and cotton washclothes. While my collegues whine and complain about all the mandatory calls, I look forward to the knitting time. Some weeks, its all I get.

For me it is an ADHD thing. If I have something to occupy my hands so I am not just sitting I can focus on the speaker. Otherwise my brain completely tunes out the speakers and looks for something by way of daydream or otherwise that is more immediately satifying. When I am at Continuing educations seminars where the speaker is teleconferenced, I notice all the men read the paper, but while knitting, I can acutally focus and learn.

I heard a report once that people speak about 250 words per minute, the ears can hear up to 400 words per minute and the brain can process up to 700 wpm. That is why people daydream, the brain is processing too fast and is bored.
Vision impaired people who are auditory learners can use a special tape player that speeds up without distorting the sound. They train themselves to hear the words at very high rates. The first time I heard one I couldn`t believe it.

I speak at a high wpm rate, or so the court reporters tell me, does that count!
