I have submitted a pic of my SWS slipper experiments. I have shown the yarn knit with 2 different patterns. In the foreground is the slipper pattern from the book Knit One Felt Two - the same pattern Jayne used in her pink slippers. These are knit with a single strand of SWS - one ball for each slipper with a bit left over. They are knit to a very large dimension and then felted. I because of this, the stripes are closer together which IMHO is a nice look. Because they are knit to such large proportions, there is lots of knitting on 6.5mm needles and the knitting is loose. I used DPN`s and the loose stitches dropping off the needles was a problem and my wrists are sore (whine!). I should have used 1 or two circs to remedy this problem. I also love the shape of them when off the foot. However, when on the foot , the back comes half way up my heel which annoys me because it doesn`t feel right.
The second pair is knit with my old standby pattern (White Buffalo pattern). They are tried and true - everyone who receives them finds them very cosy and comfy. They are knit with the same sized needle but with 2 strands held together. They are fraternal twins. I don`t like the wide stripes as well as the close stripes in the slippers in the foreground. There is less knitting involved because you just knit them a bit larger than your foot and felt them slightly.
so, the "jury" prefers the look of the Knit One Felt Two slippers but prefer the feel on the foot of the WB slippers. One is more clogish and the other more sockish.
I also found that this yarn felts a bit more quickly than other yarns I have felted.

You`ve been busy, Dr. Feltenstein! Just touching the SWS, I have no problem believing it felts in a heartbeat. Wonder what would happen if you double stranded the SWS with your old standby pattern?

That`s what I did in the tried and true pattern and why they are totally fraternal. I used about the same amt of yarn but as I only had the two balls, couldn`t start the second one with the same striping pattern. The "fraternality" doesn`t bother me a bit. I`m almost always mismatched ;-}

Cool, Les -- you`ve been busy! Can`t wait to see the results.

I really like that White Buff pattern. Those do look cozy. I have two questions about your Knit one felt too pair.

Just curiosity, but was there a reason for 6 1/2mm needles? I used 8mm needles, and the knitting (yes for such a huge slipper) goes a lot faster. And the other thing I`m now wondering is, do you think that some short row shaping could be used to raise the back of the heel without building up the whole cuff? I`m planning to make some more pairs of these as gifts now that I`ve got them figured out.

I don`t mind the clog heel, but a raised heel might be nice.

And yes -- I totally agree about the nice compressed stripes you get single stranded. How thick did the double strand pair come out? Was it noticeable different?

Way to forge ahead!

sorry to mislead - you`re right, the honking big needles were 8mm! Glad you pointed that out.
The only problem with trying to build the back of the slipper up is that you wouldn`t be able to get your foot in them as there is no stretch after felting. I was thinking that if you built up the back, you`d have to have some sort of a slit down the front with a button and elasticized loop (which would never be undone) which would provide some sort of a stretchy opening. My tried and true`s are not heavily felted so retain some stretch.

Okay...I guess that`s probably true. And no way would I want to have to fuss around with all that. They look so smooth and charming as is.

I`ve been doing tons of DPN knitting lately and my hands are definitely starting to complain. So I`ve taken up my flat back and forth Pamir project. That feels like a nice change.l

did you use the white buffalo pattern 105 sold here? I`ve a bunch that needs to become slippers. I was going to use the fiber trends pattern, but I`m having a hard time getting interested after my sizing disaster.
