In sewing like knitting I am self taught. I know this is such a dumb question, but when your backside tension is too loose, do you tighten or loosen the tension knob? Bets, other seamstresses, any answers?

I go to the gym.

Sorry, Amy, couldn`t resist.

When the top tension has drawn loops from the back to the top, the tension is too tight. When the loops are on the back, the top tension should be tighter. On my machine, that means tightening the knob.

Amy,
I haven`t sewn anything in over a year, but if your bottom tension is too loose, you`ll probably need to loosen your bobbin tension (unless it`s just that you have your upper tension really tight, but if that`s the case, your upper seam would look a little odd, as well). There`s a small screw-like bit on the bobbin case (at least there is on my sewing machine), and you need to turn that a bit to tighten up. I can`t remember which way tightens, but you can try it out on some scrap fabric to test it and find out. Hope this helps.

My experience with sewing machines is not current but I used to sew quite a bit many many years ago. I think that you work with your top tension first. It`s the most likely to become wonky for some reason. I think you would fiddle with the bobbin tension as a last resort.

And sometimes it depends on the fabric you are sewing - a different sized needle can make a big difference.

Amy,

Here`s a couple of things to check before adjusting tension. (1) are you using the same type thread or same weight of thread in the bobbin and needle (2) appropriate needle for fabric (3) is there dust or lint in the tension discs or in the feed dogs (4) is the machine threaded correctly - don`t laugh, I`ve cussed my machine a million times and realized it was operator error. ;-} The upper tension is almost always what needs adjustment. I have been sewing for many, many years and I`ve never had to adjust the bobbin tension (maybe I`m lucky.) A lower number on the upper tension dial means looser tension. Tighten the upper tension in small increments.
Whatcha making? Something for Christmas exchange maybe? :-}

Amy....Please don`t say that is a dumb question. Tension is the MOST frustrating part of a sewing machine. It`s best not to play around too much with the tension. You can really screw it up bad. I never touch the bobbin tension. And.....I think Jayne has the best solution....go to the gym....or get out the wine & chocolate.
Last time mine was messed up I sold the machine and got a new one.....really!

If you are getting loopy threads on the backside, tighten your top tension. Just turn the knob a little bit at a time. If the knobs have numbers, look up the default number in your manual, set knob to this and try. If stitch is too loose - tighten,too tight -loosen.

Can it be possible that nobody got my joke?

Amy said (what do you do if) "your backside tension is too loose"

I said "I go to the gym"

Get it?

Amy, I know you probably knew all that other stuff in my post but I gave you the checklist I go through before I change my tension. :-}

Y`all are a wonder, and yes Jayne, in life my backside tension has been looser than I would like for WAY too long. I thought it was the top that needed to be loosened, but after these comments I think I may need a heavier duty needle as the fabric I am using is way heavier than what I normally sew. I didn`t appreciate that could make a difference.
