OOPS! I came to a halt again. When I cast on with 60 stitches (instead of 56) and do the P1, *K2,P2*,K1 ribbing and start the pattern row #1 with P2 instead of P3 should I be starting row #2 with P1,K4,K1, instead of K1,P1,K4 pattern? My pattern looks the reverse of the picture of the sweater. HELP!

Ok, the selvedge edge bit-disregard-if you want a selvedge, add 2 stitches-one on each side (62). Follow the pattern EXACTLY as written now, except for the neck which will still be 12 stitches or 14 stitches. Remember how I said your pattern stitch is a multiple of 6? Your 60 stitches is 10 pattern repeats, you have not added extra for selvedge, so just knit it as it is written. (Follow?)

This seems alot simpler since I am an average knitter. I will frog and start again since it is only 30 rows back. Thanks!

I down loaded this free pattern from the site & am confused with the instructions. The pattern after ribbing 2x2 is Row 1 *P3 K1 S1 K1* repeat frm * to * Row 2 *K1 P1 K4* Repeat from * to * It says for sizes a) & b)P2 to start. Does that mean just for the first set or all across the row? If anyone knows, please let me know. Thanks, Judy Wolfe

The P2 will be just at the start of Row 1. There may be a corresponding K3 at the end of Row 2. These changes will make the stitch count work correctly in the pattern. The P1 in Row 2 is into the Slip 1 of Row 1. As long as you check that the P1 hits the S1, you won`t have any trouble with the pattern. The stitch count is to give you the right size.

Hi Judith,
This is a Sunday morning math problem!! I`ve been trying to figure this out for quite a while now...seems confusing! I can understand it if you`re doing size b, but not size a!!! Huh!!
I figured it out this way: IF your intended size req`d 59st cast on, and the pattern stitch is multiples of 6st, you wouldn`t be able to evenly divide 59 by 6. It would work, however, if you do 9 repeats of 6 and make your first repeat a multiple of 5st. So, my vote is that you only do the first multiple with P2, thereafter you P3 for the rest of the row. THAT IS, IF YOU`RE DOING SIZE B!!!!
I also see what Alice is referring to!?! What DO you do to the K4 at the end of the row 2 if you only have P2 to start???
I`d swatch big-time if I were you...until I could understand the pattern really clearly, especially if it requires a bit of fudging.

Thank you for replying. I am doing size a with a 55 stitch cast on. I tried doing the p2 across because that makes multiples of 5. It didn`t look like the picture, so I ripped & tried p2 on the first set & p3 the rest of the way. You are right, it doesn`t come out right. I will try some more rows. Thanks again. Judy Wolfe

Easiest solution, Judy: chocolates, ice cream, and french fries (would equal a size b).
Good luck!

Billie, You are absolutely right. Alice solved the problem. The key was purling over the slipped stitch. That was what was needed & it looks fine. Thanks for all the support. Judy Wolfe

Alice, You are absolutely right. I ripped & started over with the pattern. The key is purling into the slipped stitch. Thanks for saving my life. I appreciate your answer & support. It looks fine now. Judy
