Thanks for all the suggestions, everyone! For those asking about the pattern, here it is:

http://spincraftpatterns.com/29swSuretoFit.pdf

This is the 3rd or 4th time I`ve used it...it`s so idiot-proof that each time I do this pattern, I change it; it`s great for experimenting with all kinds of details. This time, the lace panels are just some I found in a book of stitch patterns, and the shoulders don`t look like regular raglans because I discovered that by putting a round or two of a contrasting stitch (reverse stocking stitch works well), the shoulders will appear fitted.

I was thinking to make short sleeves, and then add on to them later (Sept.???...in time for winter) to make them full length and flared. But then it might show a color difference. I should have mentioned that the length isn`t finished...I`ll be making it longer with the front shorter than the back, slit sides. The button band is in seed stitch, and I`ll carry that same idea along the bottom hem, and then up the little side slits. I wanted it fitted but instead of decreasing, I put in some ribbing down the sides (under the arms), starting with purl-knit-purl for 10 rows, then p-k-p-k-p for 10 rows, and then p-k-p-k-p-k-p for...well, for a while! Now, I`m reversing my way out of that rib, and am considering even doing a bit of increasing to allow for hip ease. (Get it??? "Hippies"??? AR-Ar-Ar!)

So, sleeve length?? I love the sonata, I`m lovin` this cardy...can`t seem to put it down...and I have 14 balls! I may just have to knit on this baby until I run out of yarn...?!!

Billie,

That`s a great pattern, thanks for the link. It sounds like you`ve got this one down cold. I like your plan for the cardi, side slits, etc. I`ll have to print out your suggestions for fitting. I`m so lame about making drastic changes like that. How many balls of Sonata have you used so far? 14 in all to start with, this could be a really loooong cardi. ;-} Will you have buttons? I like it open without buttons, more comfy looking but still dressy too. Besides, I hate sewing on buttons. ;-}

Hey, Benne! (Imagine running into YOU here?!!)
I haven`t been keeping track of the balls, though I keep saving the labels! Major smartperson idea: Instead of trying to keep track of how many I`ve used, I COULD count how many balls I have left!

Doesn`t take me very long to wake up and figure stuff out!!

You`re making good progress on that cardi, Billie (Blillie) lol. I like knitting with Sonata too.

Just how long are you planning to make that thing, girl? Maybe you`ll have some Sonata left for some kind of loverly accessory afterward. You can carry off a cropped look if you want (yeah, I know it`s not everyone`s cup of tea), but you certainly have the option. Maybe that`s the next step for this fave pattern of yours.

Thanks for that link, it looks like just what I have been looking for. Can you explain a little more about the contrasting stitch so that the raglan shoulders don`t look like raglan? My little brain isn`t grasping where you put that reverse stockinette. Do you do a couple of rounds just on the shoulder sections? Daryl

I`m glad you asked that question, Daryl. I was wondering the same thing with my tiny little brain spinning. ;-}

Oh good...I`m not the only one with little spinning brain. It was too late last night to try to figure it out. Now I`m curious again.

This was the first sweater pattern I made...after knitting for only a couple of months. It is a great pattern!

Hi Daryl,
With this sweater, I started the contrasting stitches on the 37th row...about 5" down from the neck. Since it`s knit from front button band, across the shoulder, across the back, next shoulder and then across the other front panel to button band, it creates a "ring" just off the shoulder...hmmm, I wonder if I can post a pic of it...give me a sec here....

Yup, I think it`ll work...hopefully, this will show what I did. On two of the other sweaters using this pattern, I put 3 rings/bands of rev.st.stitch about 3" apart; this gave even more of a dropped shoulder effect.

(And Benne, I have 7 balls left as we speak!)

Thanks for the explanation, it makes sense. As someone with fairly broad square shoulders (I loved it when shoulder pads were in fashion, just ripped them out and I was stylish) I tend to avoid raglan sleeves for myself. They tend to emphasize the shoulders and make me look like one of Benne`s construction workers rather than the sweet lil thang of my mind`s eye. Daryl

Short rows starting just below the neck band (neck width + 3/4 inch each side) and continuing every few rows (depending on the shape of your back) until they extend more than half way across the sleeves really give the back and shoulders shape.

If you weigh a finished garment on a good kitchen scale you`ll know how much yarn you used. Move up to the total of complete balls used. ie weight = 735 grams, count as 750g. This would be 15 x 50g balls or 8 x 100g balls. To get yardage multiply by figure given on ball band (or corrected yardage). At 100 yards to each 50 g ball, you would need 1500 yards to repeat in another similar weight yarn.

Alice, I`m afraid I don`t understand the short row shaping part. For a top down ragland type are you saying to make the neck then divide for the sleeves and front but do extra short rows on the back? I can`t picture it. I keep envisioning extra rows which would accomodate a hump. Daryl

Billie,
Your cardigan is terrific! That`s a great & easy idea to off-set the sloping shoulder look of the raglan...I gotta try it :-), thanks for sharing!
