I`m shuffling my toe in the dust, here. You are so kind about my little bits of knitting, compared to all the work that Sandra and Grace and Patricia have put in on their shawls and sweaters. I`m a small-project person by attention span and climate (geographical and personal, lol!) as you have figured out, with very few garments in my WIPs and WIMs.

Thanks much!

ALL knitting is good...you`re working with sticks and string...you`re enjoying what you do...your finished work speaks for itself. No need for toe shuffling -- you are among friends, Barbara!

Here`s a brief primer on colour theory:

Colours look good with other shades of the same colour.

Colours look good beside their compliments (blue/orange; green/red; yellow/purple)

Colours also look good next to the colours they blend with to create new colours and next to the new colours (blue and green; yellow and blue and green; red and yellow and orange; blue and red and purple)

If you look at my scarf, you`ll see that I used all these rules. Each colour is used once as the bigger block, once as the smaller block, and I made sure that only good combos were touching each other.

Apart from that, I used colours that go with the things I like to wear.

You could experiment with the same kinds of effects in your small projects to have some fun with it.

The other trick is to vary the stripe widths (fibonacci is always a good idea)

And yes...it is all garter. Must be a camera trick that other stitches seem to be there.

Barbara,
No need for modesty on your part: there are MANY advantages to smaller scale projects. Any way that you get knitting satisfaction is good!
I remember starting my love of knitting with hats and would like to go back to that and other smaller projects, except for the huge stash that I`ve built up, each yarn of sweater-quantity....I`ve bitten off more than I can chew, or rather knit in a life time :-p!

Jayne,
Your scarf is very beautiful and unique! Thank you for the primer on why it works, I really needed it; staring at my purchased color wheel just wasn`t enough!

That`s called SABLE: Stash Acquisition Beyond Life Expectancy. I`m there, too; but I still seem to acquire more in spite of my good resolutions. I have `talked` myself out of purchases of the Beauty cotton and today`s as well - but it was a challenge not to press the `complete purchase` button! LOL!

Yes Sandra and Barbara, I have acquired yarn beyond my life/knitting expectancy, but I am in denial about it. Sure...I`ll get through it all...IF I stop buying yarn NOW. Trouble is...I don`t stop. I could not resist today`s cotton offering. Bought enough lilac to make a cable sweatshirt I`ve had my eye on this year.

Sandra, I was looking over the beautiful colours of Highland Wool, and there are so many possibilities for wonderful colour-blocked scarf combinations. I might have to make a second one.

The only thing that kept my pointer off the `purchase` button was knowing what I`ve got in my stash - which is due to the pre-company clean-up. I have some very nice Paton`s Look At Me! yarn that I bought a year or so ago when it was being discontinued. It`s acrylic, yes, but good for babies and toddlers, and it came in so many bright, cheerful colors and coordinating multis.

Don`t tell me about the purples - those were the hardest to resist!!

Thanks to all of you who wrote in sympathy for our loss of our little Shadow. Your kindness and understanding have helped a great deal.

And I am also appreciative of your comments about my Highland Triangle Shawl. I really love how this turned out, and I like wearing a shawl these cooler mornings and late evenings. Plus it`s much easier to adjust than a sweater when I have one of my personal heat waves, lol!

I missed out on the previous thread, but I just want to add my praises for your shawl. I have looked at this pattern many times and felt overwhelmed. How long did it take to make and do you have any words of wisdom to pass on?

I know about overwhelmed. I frogged the first rows of the razor-shell lace umpteen times, and then the whole thing went into time-out for months. Then I did Cindy G`s very easy scarf and it finally dawned on me how that pattern is supposed to work, and it helped so much to see it in just a few repeats. (http://baxterknits.blogspot.com/2006/11/simple-lace-scarf-original-knitting.html)

It was the little eyelet section between the two major areas that kept me thinking I had the razor-shell pattern wrong, since my eyes were trying to line up that little section with the first few rows of the lace, and of course they didn`t match.

After that, the razor-shell went fast, and even the lace edging wasn`t hard, just a bit tedious. Use short dpns to knit the edging, or Denise points if you have that set. If you`re going to make it shorter than the pattern, as I did, you`ll have to do a bit of math when you get to the edging since it requires a multiple of 4 stitches of the razor-shell for each edging point, but you can fudge that; I was off 2 stitches, but it was easy to work 2 rows of the edging in one stitch.

You are so kind! I`m looking forward to wearing the bolero when it comes home. It`s just the sort of jacket for SoCal.

Barbara,

Your bolero looks great!! Warm enough for a breeze but cool enough for SoCal weather.
