Hi -- thanks for the welcome! I am not new to Elann, but new to chatting about knitting, here or anywhere. Still figuring out the terms (DH -- tell me, dear husband, darling husband, dreaded husband????). In any case if that`s what it is, I have one and a 9yrold daughter (DD?), and 13yrold son. At 41, I am thankfully out of the target range of hipsters that Vogue`s K1 has in sight. Especially grateful for that this month. We live in Port Moody (Vancouver BC) with our beloved pet hamster (BH??) named Pepper.
What else? I used to teach junior high school. I studied at a seminary for several years. A bit of an over-achiever, I burned out rather badly about three and a half years ago and have had to re-structure my life. One of the key elements of that turned out to be knitting. I didn`t have the energy for much, so about three years ago exactly I saw a friend knitting something with Bernat DenimStyle, and saw a free pattern for a sweater on the ball band, and went out and bought needles and yarn and an "I Can`t Believe I`m Knitting!" book and made the sweater. It turned out huge on me. The pattern told me it was for a 34" bust, but I did not notice that "finished size" was 44 (and mine was more like 48). Good early learning experience. And when I washed it, it became about 1/3 bigger again. Another good early learning experience. Since then, I have knitted so many things I`ve lost track. I`m a selfish knitter -- I knit mainly for myself (sweaters, tanks, jackets, hats, scarves, ponchos, and my fave: a fitted, cabled bolero, pattern by Karabella). But I`ve made a hat and scarf for DH, cosy bulky socks, ear-flaps hat, and a hoodie for the boy, ponchos, scarves, hats, pullovers for the girlie. And myriad hats and scarves for gifts for everyone else.
Nowadays I`m branching out into my first shawl, afghan, socks in yarn weights that will fit into shoes, and a clothing item in DK yarn that I`m determined to finsh this time. DK usually stops me in my tracks about halfway along. I`m planning to make that Chickami (sp?) when my Sonata arrives. I got the mayan because it looked dark and dramatic (I have very dark hair).
I tend to get a bit obsessive about my interests, so I`ve accumulated a lot of yarn and patterns, books, etc. over the last three years. Unfortunately that never stops me from scooping up whatever else comes along, as soon as it comes along (like the Sonata which I vowed I would resist, but alas...). I`m teaching a few friends how to knit these days, and one of them was on the phone with me the other day. We were chatting on the phone and looking at the Elann site at the same time. I had just ordered sock yarn -- that latest stuff -- and Karin was oohing and ahing. I told her that some of the colours would sell out before our watching eyes, so we watched and, indeed, certain colours were disappearing, like an auction in reverse. She couldn`t take the pressure and bought half a dozen balls. And then we laughed when we refreshed the page and saw the numbers go down again. Easily amused. But she is definitely a knitter now.
Health-wise, I`m doing a lot better now. I`ve spent a lot more money on therapy than on yarn, so I figure it`s all relative. I still love to knit for part of every day, sometimes for a large part of a day, but I also love to write, ride my bike, paint, go for long rambling walks, and get together with good friends.
Thanks for asking -- looking forward to chatting with you -- you soudned like a friendly lot in past postings.
Jayne

Thank you so much. I have discovered Elann just a few month ago and I am having a great time with their yarns. The wonderful prices allow me to knit to my little heart content. I have just bought the book by Nicky Epstein "Fabulous felted bags". They are indeed fabulous and they are my next projects. I will be using HW ,they have so many colors! Nicole

Welcome Jayne and Knittynicky,
We`re a very friendly group and it`s nice to have you here with us. However, here are some things you should know about us (1) we fall in love with yarn, deeply and passionately. We are also brazen hussies who fall for the next pretty skein to come along. (2) we will encourage you to join us in the acquisition of fiber, and I ain`t talkin` granola, baby. Some might call this enabling. We prefer the term "encouragement." (3) we have been known to stalk a certain yarn and have reduced ourselves to shameless begging when we can`t find enough (4) some of us have taken security measures to guard against midnight raids by roving bands of elannite yarn bandits - you might want to build a moat and drawbridge if you have an especially choice yarn or a great stash. Other than that, I think we`re pretty normal, well, fairly normal. Okay, we`re all warped, especially where yarn is concerned, but we make great buds in a yarn crisis. So, what`s in your stash??? HA! What a range of projects! I see where the knitting elves have been for the summer. The detailing on the red sweater is great-- your creation?
Great work! Bri

Nicole-
I am impressed-cleary, you know your way around a set of needles. Also impressed that you have your own mannequin to model your top! I realize you have that for your business, but hey, you know....
Is there a basic sweater template or pattern you work from for your summer cardigans? Or one you recommend?

Nicky! Your knitting is terrific! The sweaters are a timeless, classic style and look very well on you. Lately, I`ve been reminded of how advantageous it is to knit classic flattering designs, having just washed a cardigan my mother knit in the 60`s from her attic. It is a Chanel style, and I`d feel stylish wearing it now, anyplace. Whereas the poncho I just completed, hmmm..that`ll take a little courage. Anyway, I love the sweaters and the purse! Sandra

Nicky,
Wonderful work! Your creativity is running rampant in your knitting as well as your silk painting. Lovely details on your summer tops and fantastic fit. And the bag, well, that is just too cool.

WOW what great sweaters. The detail and colors just beautiful. I am loving the details you added. This is what sets off a great design. I bow deeply to anyone doing intarsia. The purse is so lively and fun. What a lovely way to start my morning. suzann

Wow, Nicole, you have a wide range of knitting talents. The bag popped out at me this morning. So fun and colourful. I have never even tried intarsia. Talk about wearable art.

Thank you everyone for your lovely comments. I usually make my own pattern, this way I am guaranteed (well most of the time) a proper fit. I use the Sweater Wizard program, this is my favorite program to make pattern. I have a set of measurement for shoulder and armhole I use all the time, then when I see a picture or other source of inspiration I apply the design to my basic pattern. For the bag I like to add hardware to my bags to make them more purse-like, I found a good source of handles and hardware at www.umei.com. Their web site is not very good, they have a much better catalog. Thank you again, I have thoroughly enjoy seeing all of your work and find it very inspirational.

Thanks, Nicky for the info, it will come in handy. Come to think of it when I am dissatified with a sweater`s fit it is usually something to do with the cross-shoulder width, the armhole or the neckline not being right!
