So my boss calls on Wed pm and says they need me in Fairfax VA Friday am for 2 weeks and the first thing on my mind was - What knitting projects should I take with me?

(then I called DH and broke the news)
(I brought socks to finish)

What are your knitting opportunities?

Scully,

Thats exactly what I thought of the Idaho trip. I took along some socks as well. The pic will pop up here shortly.

I`ve gotten compulsive about taking my knitting with me everywhere. And since I always overpack I`m always guilty of taking far more than I can possibly finish. My favorite `forced opportunities` are when flying, at my DD`s swim meets, ditto her music concerts. And when we drive on vacation, as long as the road is fairly straight - knitting on a winding road is guaranteed motion sickness. I`ve been known to knit while waiting for a table at a restaurant, while standing in line at an amusement park, and even when stuck in rush hour traffic while I wait for the light to turn green!

Yep, I`ve brought small knitting projects to restaurants -- when we go out as a family, but not when DH and I go out on our own. In the car on long drives, at the ortho (waiting for the kids), in the car waiting for the kids to come out after school, and especially when I`m at awkward family gatherings, and I need to be there, but I don`t want to be "all" there. :)

Oh gosh-I hope you brought the divine Miss M`s socks too!

Um, from 9-10, and 2-3:30 every day-which is when I am usually slow. Suffering from a little burn out right this minute, tho....

I am right next door in Vienna. If you want to knit any time let me know. Sunday from 1-5 is a group. Tuesday evening is a spinning group- though most people knit also. Saturday and Sunday there is a fiber festival about 50 miles to the west. It is a small one, but I might head out Sat AM.

My favorite time is at DS`s trombone lesson. The waiting room has the most comfortable love seat that just fits me and my knitting bag, there is an aquarium and a big clock on the wall facing me, so at a glance I can tell how much time is left and also have a tranquil view of fish swimming. Perfect, guilt-free knitting since I`m not at home with myriad tasks to do!

I think when I am away is some of the best knitting. I get really into it and can knit with children climbing on me, when beauty shop is played on my hair, and while I`m cooking/baking in an unfamiliar kitchen. Best place to throw down is my SIL`s kitchen table or in a car. Hotel rooms work, better if there`s a chair.

It`s a nice time of year to be in Fairfax, before it gets humid. Enjoy it! Bri

Check out Knit Happens in Old Town Alexandria - it`s a great shop.

When I realized I might have to spend a month in Milwaukee, alone, the first thing I did was look up yarn shops and see if there is an SnB I can join for that short bit.

I can`t do complex pieces in the car or airplane but I can do the stockinette of a sweater or the beginnings of a scarf as long as it isn`t too bulky. I have been taking the sweater in the car when I evacuate for prospective buyers.

Jayne, your life sounds like mine. I have decided that car pool line is no longer a chore, but me time!

I found that I got a lot less bored when I had something that I like to do with me. And in potentially stressful social situations, it keeps me feeling settled.

Welcome Jayne! I hear you - I use knitting as an absolute social crutch - being something of a wallflower - and it`s also a terrific conversation starter, isn`t it?
